Whilst I was sorry to see Goodwin go I'm curious about Gelling on his day I think he offers something a bit different we might even get a ball or two to the winger. I agree with you Captain that we should be better off with the short term injured Widdop rather than the long term injured Brown. Hopefully we will see better form from Currie and BMM and more decent stuff from Philbin, Clark, Austin, Ratchford......
I think our first choice 17 isn't that bad, my reservation is strength in depth but that applies to most teams and banishing the form that we ended on last year

| Keep the faith UR! Widdop should be massive for us. Gelling/Burrell should offer something different and Currie and BMM are renaissance men, the future is bright!

| I'd have swapped Goodwin for Gelling everytime. Gelling has everything Goodwin has plus a good pair of hands.
Gelling can do the around the back passing too.
Definitely an improvement.
I'd put Keenan Brand in ahead of King too!

| I definitely think you should give Keenan Brand a shot in place of King. King for me is your weakest link. I’m looking forward to seeing Gelling back in SL. He’s a potential match winner and a joy to watch when he’s on his game. Hopefully he’ll find some consistency with you. I notice Ratchford is named at stand off for your friendly game tomorrow. An experiment or a SL starter??

| Whether it's a plan to play Ratch in the halves or not...
2 positives from it are...
a) if we get another hb injury...he'll have too anyway so the practice will do him good.
b)Mano gets practice time at 1 if a) occurs.

Be interesting to see if Price sticks to his tried and tested lineup.

Putting Ashton at FB & moving Ratchford (and not replacing him at FB with Mamo) is already a bit of a shift. All eyes on Ashton ... he's most definitely very quick.

| Ashton is an interesting selection at FB. Thinking about it, I'm guessing that he will want to give both Ratchford and Patton a spell at half back and, so long as he gets some game time in somewhere on the field, he doesn't need to see Ratchford play at FB. Mamo to come on at FB in the second half?

How many games did those leaving clock up last year and just as importantly, would this year see them improve on that and their form/potential?
I'll give you Goodwin

also all of those players last year either wanted out or were over the hill.
The ones that have been brought in will be the complete opposite.
That will make a big difference... We are not weaker than last year (as someone said).. we are stronger.

| Price will try different combos tonight, thats nailed on. He obviously knows he needs to change things up after the end of the season we had, and quite frankly he must have eyes, and see that Patton is definatley not the answer whilst Widdop is out. Who knows, the partnership with Ratch and Austin could fire....Widdops better at FB anyway, just look at the world cup.
I'm still not getting the usual buzz before the start of a season, although looking forward to seeing how Ashton goes. Just hope i feel different this time next week about the season in general.

Yep I think we are quite a bit stronger but I suppose we'll find out in the next few weeks when they actually get onto the pitch.

For the sake of completeness. Out of 34 competitive games (league and cup);
Goodwin - 28
Tasi - 19
Atkins - 12
Livett - 11
Westwood - 11
Brown - 0
By a strange coincidence, Tasi's number of appearances = the total number of meters gained by him for the whole season. I belive he trained well.

| Things probably a little clearer after last night?
Price mentioning Latu & Widdop could make the Wigan game - but I'm not convinced.
Ashton - Looked the part at Full Back, be interested to see his passing game as his running game looked strong and he looked safe at the back
Charnley
Gelling - Needs to improve his consistency, he seemed to watch Sarginson walk over for Salfords first try but looked good carrying the ball.
King
Lineham
Austin
Ratchford
Hill
Clark
Cooper
Currie
BMM
Hughes
Philbin
Sita
Clark
???
I hope to see Hughes more at 13 this year so we can utilise BMM more, for longer, out wide, Hughes will make a good 13 I think, no nonsense, good engine and solid defensively. Only doubt for me really is the last couple of bench spots. He liked having Mamo on the bench last year so that could continue

Regards 'Sarg try while Gelling seemingly watched'.
Is it worth risking potential injury trying to make a solo tackle to avoid letting in a try in a friendly?

| No inside info but, from what I've read, I'm not expecting to see Widdop, Latu or Hughes make the 17 for next week (may one or more named in the 19).
Ashton, Burrell and Walker have all put themselves in the frame for the Wigan so could well be the team as put forward by Alffi_7 less Hughes plus Burrell and Walker. I'm not sure who would start between BMM, J Clark and Burrell.
