| He was unreal when he first broke into the first team
his try and at Sts was the fastest I had seen anyone run, he had to slow down to put the ball down
For some reason though he lost that pace which set him apart from others so I dont really see the point on him coming back when hes not a quick, the Penny of 07/08 would be a different story.

I've watched him at the LSV two or three times this year. He is still rapid and doesn't jump out of the defensive line in the way he used to. Hard to judge him but he does seemed to have improved his positioning and game awareness. He still has the habit of backing his pace in all situations. Not a bad thing in the Championship but one that could get him in trouble if he were to return to SL.

| Hes played for a few teams since he left us, doesnt seem to of been able to hold down a spot, which even when he left us I thought Widnes, Wakey or London would of kept him if he still had that finishing touch.
I just cant see this being true, Smith wasnt even a fan of his at his best.

Interesting that you have probably seen more of him than the rest of us. I only saw him play one game, and he did seem a lot more street wise than when he was with us. But what did you mean by ' backing his pace in all situations' ?
Not passing ?

I haven't seen him play any games this season, so I'm not commenting on whether he would be a good signing or not, however if he does sign for the Wire, I would back Tony Smith's judgement rather than some on here, who seem to be relying on things they watched several years ago.

| After going to watch Swinton this evening I was reminded of one thing about Kevin Penny; he scores tries that send a shiver down your spine and to be honest are tries I'm not sure anybody else is capable of scoring.

Go on then - marks out of 10 for his try v Williams and Mendieka's efforts. Which was the best?

From what I remember ...(every try is a good one)
Penny - 7/10 loose pass from nanyn picked up on halfway by penny and ran diagonally under the posts - no one got near him.
Williams 9/10 - nice chip kick from Burke (corrected from harvey) turned the defence, gathered in on the burst by Mendieka who fed on to Williams to run in to the corner.
Mendieka - 5/10 dropped on a blocked grubber kick.
Penny has been excellent all year but in the last 5 weeks and with a run in the team Williams too has been excellent.
Mendieka certainly has an eye for a try at this level.
Ps Rhys Evans won man of the match at full back.

Yes.
From swinton website - Rhys Evans, the Warrington dual-reg player, will come in at full-back for suspended Ritchie Hawkyard and David Mills will return to the pack.Chambers added: "Rhys has been training with us for a few weeks and he will be a straight swap for Titch."

Stats do not always tell the full picture but here they are
Swinton Top 4 try scorers to date
James Mendieka played 16 tries 10 goals 0
Ryan Shaw played 18 tries 9 goals 38
Kevin Penny played 27 tries 9 goals 2
Rhys Williams played 15 tries 9 goals 0
So make your own minds up.....

I do think you rather play-down Penny's try. Admittedly it followed a crap bouncing pass but the way Penny scythed through the defence and rounded the full-back without anybody getting within a dicky of laying a finger on him was something special and is the kind of play to get a crowd on its feet and tingling with excitment.
The Williams try actually came from an "off-script" last tackle play and it was actually Burke rather than Harvey who chipped through.
Either way an enjoyable evening (with quite a few Warrington speccies in attendance), I might even drop in at Whitehaven to see if Swinton can stay up if I'm up in the Lakes that weekend.

| My two penneth..I would like to see him given another chance. As previous posters on here have said, he had that certain indefinable 'something' that made you sit up and take notice.
Hey, it might be a primrose-tinted and YES I KNOW about the previous defensive frailties but he will be commanding a lot lower wage than he did in the past, (and he must have learnt SOMETHING during his time away) so where is the risk, I would plump for him over Williams any day.

Was not meaning to undersell the try and was commenting of the overall try and not just the player finish. Penny is lightning fast and game changer. The majority of his tries this season have been long range and in open/broken play he is a frightening prospect for the defence.
That said, Williams has worked hard for the team over the last few weeks and with a settled team has proved a good finisher too.
Most importantly I am just glad that people enjoy watching Swinton and rugby at Championship level.

Now who was that well know winger that played at Stains outside Mal Meninga?
As the Rubber fella says the Centre is the key to any success that a resurgent KP would have.
What a joy it would be to see Briers or Myler having the choice to kick over the top for KP and then again a short chip for the other strike players. The opposition defenes should be in two minds all game.

I can't remember who the Lions were playing against but he scored an absolute belter from 80 metres out that only a player in Penny's mould could have. Skinned 3 or 4 with speed rather than footwork. Five minutes later he'd been bundled into touch on tackle 2 or 3 when he should have cut infield. Later on in the game he almost did the same thing be managed to throw the ball back before ending up in the seats. It's great that he has the confidence to take on the opposition and use his speed (of which he looks like he's lost none) to its best effect. Sometimes his enthusiasm (not knocking him) gets in the way and puts him in trouble.
On the whole he looks a better player to me but whether he can use the extra experience he's gained and put it all together at SL level is another question. Personally I'd love to see him given another chance, just as long as we can all stand the anxiety that comes with him. Still a great player to watch.

| I think it was versus Salford a few years back a kick over the top for Penny to run on to, I don't know how many he skinned but he scored a try he had no right to score just with his pace, he kicked it over the line and dived on it, cracking try.
