| Brett Hodgson is a great signing on the face of it.
But aren't any of you genuinely worried about signing a player that will be 33 before he plays for you, has only played 7 of 17 games for Hudds this season and is now out for another month?
This is a genuine question as we signed Long who was pretty much in the same position and has hardly played for us.

| Very good player and could take you up a notch in attack, I think Smith want's somebody who is a bit more reliable than Mathers.

| If people listen to Smith on the radio i/v.. he clearly states that BH will be looked after and not over played so it's not like he is being brought in as our main go-to man. We have a few players who can play FB to a good level and Hodgson is more about buying the complete package. Its about passing on his knowledge and methods to players like Burke, Evans et al who will hopefully be coming through next year and the year after.
I have 0 worries on this one being an astute signing.

| I`m not normally a fan of signing players of this age especially when we have quite a few players already hovering around the 30+ age group, but in saying that if Rhys Evans is as good as people say he is then its a smart move from Tony Smith.
Brett Hodgson doesn`t play like a player in the latter years of his career, he still looks fresh and his performances speak for themselves. It gives Rhys Evans the chance to learn from a proven world class fullback whilst he continues his development as a player, at the same time we get a recent man of steel winner in our line up. The only slight negative is his injuries, he seems to have picked up a few in recent times.

Exactly, that's my take on it.
I'd be worried about the signing if we were going to build a team around Hodgson, like Hull are trying to do, which we aren't. He's an extra component of what we're trying to do, where we're trying to go.
Also, I'd be worried if Smith wasn't used to handling over 30's, when I say managing them, I mean their workload. He did this to great effect at Leeds, and has done so here, galvanising Solomona, Morley, Briers etc, so I have no worries.

| I think it's a very good signing tbh. He is a great goal kicker and is a big reason why Huddersfield have been a top team the last few years.
Wire IMO need a proven goalkicker, a loose forward and a prop for next season and I think you will win something definitely (that's not saying you won't win something this year either btw ). You have the goal kicker now, and have replaced the weakest spot of your team. Astute signing, especially with Rhys Evans coming through.

Maybe you should read the thread entitled "Myler" on your board then.
Pretty sure I sung his praises on there
As for Hodgson, before it was official there were plenty on here concerned about his age and fitness as well, so I can't see how it's just Wigan fans complaining.
If it's true that Smith has brought him in not expecting him to play every game then fair enough, it may turn out to be a good move. But surely the fact that he's a quota player and must surely be coming as one of the highest paid at the club, you'd expect him to be the star player who plays every game (as much as possible). I'd be annoyed, for example, if we'd signed Barrett and then he'd only played half the games his first season because of niggly injuries or whatever. Big injuries are inevitable, like Carvell for example, but if you have a player who plays one week then misses the next it's surely a waste if that player is supposed to be one of your stars.
Saying that though I still expect you to be the team to beat next year with him in the side. I'd just worry that Hudds were willing to let him go over the sake of that extra year when they know him better than anyone (including Tony Smith).

Don't flatter yourself, Rogues is on most boards.
Without derailing the thread, Hodgeson may well be a good signing, but surely he is more of a stop gap?? I would highlight Mathers as your weakest player atm (don't go getting all defensive either, or bring up any "thanx fot 100k, mathers is well gd" I look through your starting 13 and I can't see someone else I would target)
Hodgeson was a class fullback, and this signing suggests to me that you've got a good young fullback coming through who Smith rates. I don't get to watch many academy games, so I wouldn't know, but that's my guess.

Can you clarify something for me? It is widely acknowledged that Hodgson has signed for the security of a two year (probably final) contract. When the same situation arose with Phil Bailey and yourselves it was widely reported he had taken a pay cut to gain a final contract.
Can you explain the differences in respect of renumeration?

| If it's not been posted elsewhere, my predictions for 2011 are:-
James Lowes - Contract not renewed
Chris Hicks - Contract not renewed
Vinnie Anderson - Contract not renewed
Richard Mathers - Warrington RLFC
David Solomona - Warrington RLFC
Brett Hodgson - Warrington RLFC; Player/Assistant Manager, most of his salary paid as Assistant Manager?
2013 Brett Hodgson - Manager of Warrington Wolves RLFC

Really ?
I thought they'd go back to Nobby, perhaps leave Iestyn at Crusaders with Jon Sharp as his number two.
If anything, maybe Lowes 'groomed' under Noble ...
