Mark Roberts is a great example how the modern game has changed.

He'd be absolutely wasted in today's game, isolated on either the left or right flank - I recall most of his thrilling bursts being off short Andy Gregory passes in the centrefield - Though he'd still be an asset in the modern game, it would be such a shame having him restrained so much on the flank.

Closest modern SL player to Roberts would be Liam Farrell?

From memory, we we led in most games that season, then, after 60odd minutes, we fell off a cliff.
Mind you, Time Square had PLENTY of regular clientele, that season. No wonder we've been known as a drinking club for years

I remember Boyd being dragged out of retirement halfway through that season, just after Tony Barrow had been sacked, and he apparently let Steve Roach, who had been decidedly underwhelming in his opening few months with us, know a few home truths about what it meant to play for Wire.

I think the thinking was Roach had been using his time with us as a pension top-up and p!$$ up all rolled into one.

Actually I posted this topic just because of what was being said on other social media. Things look goog, but it's too early to make definitive statements like that.
It's quite interesting that these type of claims are often made by those of a younger age group, or those new to our sport.

FMC - Waterhouse and Solomona never played in the same team to my knowledge - the latter had that horrendous pre-season injury which ended his career I think.
For me he was arguably the most gifted 2nd rower I've ever seen.
That outrageous pass behind his back in the CC final against Leeds is one of my favourite moves ever.

Whoever started that comparison after only six games is clearly on cloud nine.Ridiculous.

My all time wire pack(of players I've seen)would be made up of players from 87(boyd, Roberts, Gregory)and 2011(morley, monaghan and Westwood).

I think the reason he get's mentioned a lot is that we haven't, in my opinion, had a 2nd rower as good in the 35+ years since. He was that good. Appeared out of nowhere with blistering pace on an impeccable line and timed pass. He also wasn't afraid of biff.

I saw him and I don’t think he wouldn’t make my top ten. I preferred him at centre.

But no way was Roberts that high of a back rower in my opinion. He was a handy dominant centre, he played backrow as he did at centre.

You must be thinking of someone else, because Roberts barely played centre - I'm genuinely struggling to think of when he wore the number 3 or 4.

It would only be a couple of times if he did.

He moved from right centre to the back row.

I genuinely don't recall him having an extended run in the first team at centre.

He was a top second row, though as I said earlier he's a fine example of how the game has changed and the role of the second rower, who are now just isolated out wide giving strength to defence out wide - it's why you saying the likes of Waterhouse were better, when they were completely different players.

Interesting you put Rathbone ahead of him though. Barely strung a run of games together at Wire. Did he even play 20 games?

True but the vast majority of his wire career was in the 2nd row with one premiership final game at hooker..and he'd deffo be in my top 10...some of which you mentioned were good solid players but not a patch on roberts
