Look at the premier RU centre of the same generation - Mike Tindall, marries into royalty. Do you think the Royal Household would even look at a commoner like Senior?
Even if England RU don't win all the time (but they are more successful generally than their hopeless northern counterparts) their players behave with dignity and decorum unlike these league plebs.

| Difference with Schoey is it isn't "players today aren't as good as players in my day" its "players today aren't as good as I was and neither was anyone in my day either".
In fairness to Schoey he knows he winds people up and he can take it back as well and also everyone knows how good he was.

| Can not see what's wrong with what Senior has said to be honest.
five superleague clubs voted against the Stobart sponsorship as well so what does that say.....?
If you make yourself look small time people will think you are small time.
If we were willing to just settle for free advertising we should have gone with Gillette. its a premium national brand and we dont look stupid when they sponsor the four nations and suchlike....we could have had logo's on every pack of mach 3's or fusion thingy's...
instead we are sponsored by a lorry company who pay us NO MONEY ......its tery of the highest order by big fat yorkshire bumpkin nigel wood.....
kin ell what next the spry crisp n dry challenge cup.
spot on Senior....

| It's the usual stuff where people who are barely literate are nonetheless able to tell everyone what was on the table. I like the new version, where people take a random company name out of the air and assume they're interested.
Five clubs voted against the deal - indeed. I think we in RL know that there are clubs (mostly on the wrong side of the hills) whose business model is so fragile an extra 50k makes the difference between survival and bankruptcy. More importantly, five clubs voted FOR, which they would never, ever do if they didn't perceive much wider benefits in their own interest and in those of the game.
It's all very well saying 'I would have negotiated a 30 million deal with Tesco and made sure they put a 100ft image of Kevin Sinfield on every new store' but these are very hard commercial times. I'm looking forward to seeing the Wire lorries and seeing what benefits come from it. Most rugby league 'supporters' are happy enough to bitch and moan without even vaguely trying to understand what has taken place.
And I wish people would stop giving the braindead Senior the oxygen of publicity.

| I agree with Keith Senior 100%
I was a bit sceptical when i heard that Stobart were going to be the new SL sponsors, William Stobart and Andrew Tinkler are 2 very shrewd business minds, what they have achieved is incredible really but that comes at a cost.
They pay the drivers peanuts, you ask most drivers outside of Stobarts what they think of them and whether they would work for them, most would laugh and walk away.
Can someone just clear up what the exact deal is, am i right in thinking that Rugby League recieves no money at all from Stobarts ? Is it just SL branding on 100 trucks out of a fleet of over 2,000 trucks, is that the deal ?
If thats the deal then there is only one major winner here and it isn't the RFL or the sport of rugby league.

The other week all the doomsayers were stating that there would be no sponsorship for this season.

It was rumoured that Betfred offered £750,000 per year to be super league's main sponsors, if thats true then the RFL could have approached Stobarts and arranged a seperate deal where they pay Stobart's to have 100 trailors kitted out in there logos.
You would have got a heck of a lot of change out of £750k by going down that route.

Nope, the RFL gets no money from the deal. I read 300 trucks total so I'm assuming they will be rolling out 100 trucks per year with updated branding.
It does say alot that five of the clubs preferred Stobarts offer receiving no money over Betfairs of which they would have got a cut.

No, you wouldn't. It has been estimated the value of Stobart's marketing could be worth anything between £1m and £2.5m. Have a look at the thread on VT for figures backing that up. Billboards on motorways are not cheap. These are in effect mobile, huge billboards.
Also, Betfair wanted exclusivity. Stobart did not. Hence the RFL can now attract further sponsors to associate with the SL brand, a bit like UEFA do with Champions League.

Whose marketing figures are those, the RFL's ?
I wonder if anyone at the RFL has taken into account that it looks like the logos will be going onto refrigerated trailors and those trailors will be running mainly at night when most people are asleep, so whose going to see them then ?
The Stobart refridgerated trailors will collect frozen and fresh produce throughout the night that will be delivered into supermarket stores and supermarket distribution centres in the early hours of the morning ready for when the stores open, the trailors will be long gone before most people wake up. You don't run many fridges during the day as fresh produce needs to be their first thing, a few will still run but nowhere near as many as will be running at night and into the early hours of the morning.
I'll stick with Keith Senior on this, the only real winners to me look to be Stobart.

| Haven't the RFL have already said that the lack of exclusivity means that they are likely to be able to announce partner sponsors to the cash value of the previous deal?
In which case we get the cash AND the Stobart exposure.
Well done the RFL. Oh, and Senior is an oxygen thief.

Has it been said that the trucks will be the refrigerated trailers? That's only part of what Stobart do?
They have about 2,500 trucks, we have 100 with SL livery on. I very much doubt they are trucks that are only on the road in the dead of night.

| Personally I'm happy with the Stobart deal. My only disappointment is they could not negotiate slightly more trucks to be embossed with the SL logo, maybe 15-20% instead of the approx 4% they agreed.

Its not practicle to have that kind of complex design on a curtain sided trailor for a few reasons, firstly the cost would be astronomical which i doubt would make it viable, secondly curtain sided trailors get tears in them quite often so they have to be patched up with blank pieces of tarpaulin, that means bits of players or logos will start to go missing where the blank repair patches have gone.
You then have thieves that target curtain sided trailors on a regular basis, they slash them open to get at the goods inside, the huge rips can be repaired but with artwork like the new RFL design you would have to write the curtain off and order a new one.
Compare that to the cost of just a transfer to go on the side and back of a refrigerated boxed trailor, thats why i guess they are going onto the Stobart fridges.
Stobarts main work will be with curtain sided trailors as thats where the bread and butter work is in general haulage, you won't get the same kind of exposure with the fridge trailors as like i said previously the majority will run in the evenings and early hours of the morning delivering fresh produce.

Boxed sided trailors are not practical for general haulage of which thats Stobarts main business, they can only be loaded from a loading bay or from the floor by a fork truck then the driver has to pump truck all the pallets down the trailor which takes time. Curtain sided trailors are a doddle, just pull back the curtains and you can be loaded or unloaded in no time.
Boxed trailors just aint practical other than in fridge work or specialised work like transporting F1 and rally teams etc, you see a few rented ones but companies will only take those when they are really desperate and have a shortage of trailors.
Supermarket companies have a few but other than that general haulage companies stay away from them as they arn't very practical.

| Depends on who they deliver too though, if you're delivering to yards then curtain siders are great but a lot of distribution centres have rear loading docks and curtain siders are pointless for that.

Their is no difference between a curtain sider and a boxed trailor being on a loading bay at a distribution centre, they get tipped in the same way, the material the walls are made of have no relevance to the point you made. Curtain siders do have back doors you know that open the same as a boxed trailor
Companies like Royal Mail use boxed trailors because obviously mail needs to be kept dry, boxed trailors are generally specialised trailors for specialised work.
Remember were talking Stobart here, Stobart is mainly general haulage, they are geared up for that work which is why their general haulage fleet run mainly with curtain sided trailors. They have specialised sides of the business like biomass and fridges etc.
