| As fans we have 2 choices - go and watch the club, whoever is the coach, and give them our support.....
....or stay at home and fume because we haven't recruited the love child of Wayne Bennett/Sean Wane (Wayne Wane??) who doesn't exist.
I'll see you at the HJ

| He sounds like a pretty determined character.
Now if his goal is to go straight back to the NRL in a head coaches role then good luck to him.
There are not many coaches that walk straight into a head coaches job in the NRL unless they have won a grand final over here.
There are only a couple I can think of over the last 20 years - Mick potter and Trent Robinson
There is a big list of Super League coaches that didn't win a grand final that went back as assistant or drifted off into obscurity (Price, Hodgson, Woolford, Morgan, etc etc.)
So if an NRL head coaches role is what he is after then he knows what he has to do. And apart from the RU experiment he has gone and done what he set out to do.
I am on board but it doesn't matter if the fans are. It matters if the players are.

| I wouldn't be surprised to see a promotional video nearer to season ticket time featuring Big Sam ,the Starlights & Wizzy Rascal sailing down an airbrushed Mersey at Warrington Bridge..
A Karl production to equal anything by Cecil B. De Mille.

I watched one. Non of it means he'll be a good coach. Judging by his whole ethos, he was only able to get his team to buy into it for one year over the course of his entire career. Not a good return.

I do feel sorry for you. You are literally going to spend the whole of next season waiting for us to fail, just so you can come here and try to score points by saying 'I told you so'.
I totally get that you are underwhelmed by the appointment (you still haven't said who would satisfy you), but to drone on about it so negatively just smacks of a spoilt child.

| Not been on here for a long time but cannot believe the ludicrous negativity about the club taking a bold choice. Everyone should be overjoyed that Powell has gone (he has set the club back five years) and we have a new coach with everything to prove.
The Assistant role now should be very interesting, shame Gleeson hasn’t taken it permanently. Sam on defence, Gleeson on attack.

I feel sorry for deluded lot, frankly. Back on the merry go round for another few years before you see the light of day. I'm so sorry that my opinion is such a thorn for you to see, I didn't realise I wasn't allowed to challenge the very real twoddle on here about this appointment. People swayed by an interview in which he talked a good game, his belief system worked for him, but it didn't really work on anyone else did it bar the one year? Which it seems only happened because he decided he was out the door because it'd taken him 4 years of banging his head against the wall and still having no trophy to speak of.
I'm sure we'll do moderate success compared to the last couple years, judging by the barometer of his career at Souths, we'll get about as much success as Price did. 3-4th place finishes on our good years, and a gallent win or two in the play offs. Mediocrity. And just because the ars fell out of the club in the past couple years under Powell, which the same people 'knew he was the right choice to lead us forward' are now throwing him under the bus just as easily, don't expect people to be content with 4th by contrast.

Supporting any sports team is based on delusion/hope. The vast majority of supporters the world over will inevitably be disappointed because only a tiny amount of teams can win the available trophies, whatever the sport.
But supporting a team is about having hope, having dreams, backing those hopes and dreams, seeing that hope crushed, on occasion seeing that hope rewarded.
Supporting a team is not about behaving like a spoilt child, demanding success like some self entitled brat.
Most people know this appointment is a gamble. Most, deep down, because of our record, probably do suspect its likely to end in tears, but most will get on board because its what supporters do - We dare to dream and hope, because ultimately its sport and there are far more important things to whine about.
Perhaps lighten up a bit, enjoy the ride and you never know, you might find some joy in supporting your team.

I'll be happy when i'm given something to be happy about. Until then they'll recieve due response based on the previous decisioms, and this most recent one. At this point they're just throwing sh*t against the wall and BEGGING for it to stick. And What is this nonsense that demanding success means I'm a spoilt child? Will Burgess be a spoilt child when he demands success? Because one would hope thats why he's here?? Stupid assertion. Why am I not allowed to demand success? We've been promising it for 15 years but always end up finishing like wet farts.
Very rousing speech though. Good effort. Maybe we'll become the hunters next year!

How about no. Enjoy crowing when we're 4th in the league again and winning jaff all. I'm a supporter. I just don't support lazy, ill-thought out decisions from my hometown club.

| I'm a regular watcher of the NRL, and all the NRL shows, and all the journalists and former players say that Sam Burgess is an NRL coach in the making, speak about him in glowing terms, and how much the players in the dressing room admire him. He's not just an ex-player. He is one of the most highly-regarded young assistants in the NRL.
The only downside is that the Warrington job is just a stepping stone to the Souths top job, but everyone in the NRL gushes about him. Not as a player, but as an assistant coach.
Read this from today's NRL 360:

Maguire was only at Wigan for a couple of years as well. I'm not a fan of the Burgess appointment but the argument that it would be a bad thing if he won the Grand Final and then went off to an NRL job seems like a strange thing to worry about. You're then a champion team and in a better position to attract a new coach.
Equally if Riley Dean wins Man of Steel and then Burgess takes him to Souths, not a problem for me.

That's the problem here. You could see it with Middleton's quotes about "we need to do something different". They wanted to get Holbrook and when he turned them down they were left high and dry and had to scramble around for someone. It's like when Neil Kelly turned us down and we got Anderson and Plange.
The problem is, it's not something particularly different for Wire. Big name in the NRL with red flags. Sandow, McGuire, Inglis. Two guys with a long chequered history of off field trouble and one who was in physical decline and had had mental health challenges. In each case it was easy to see how it would end from the point we signed them. We have to stop taking shots on these type of signings. So when you appoint a coach who has a (recent) history of off field trouble it hardly sets the right benchmark from the top.
Now maybe he's reformed and will turn out to be a completely different character and clean up his act now he's out of the NRL and in Warrington. But we were banking on that when we signed Sandow and McGuire too.

And if he did do well, then swan off to the NRL in 2 years... i think most of us would wish him well.
some people crying about it being a short sighted appointment.. like any SL club has a coach for much longer than a few years anyway... 2 years is a good stint.. if he is still here after 2 full seasons, it was a successful appointment.

Fail here, with the backing he will receive.. and there is no NRL job.

| The appointment of Sam Burgess is a big leap of faith when compared with Justin Holbrook. For me, he has my support and I give him the benefit of the doubt, as I'm more than relieved that the Daryl Powell era is finally over. Let's see what happens. If he does bring some players with him, as Powell did, I really hope that they will strengthen our squad, as opposed to weaken it.
