| Quote ="leagueorunion"I Disagree.Rob Burrow is 5'5 and 10'6 Stone, regarded as one of the best in the game at scrum half and an international. Lets use him as a comparable.
Richie Myler, Games 20, Carries 230, Tackles 238, Tries 15, assists 12
Rob Burrow, Games 18, Carries 253, Tackles 198, Tries 5, Assists 7.
Everyone will say Rob Burrow takes on the line more, is stronger in defence, can create more tries. Please look at the stats first eh??? Yes Burrows done more carries, but theres not much in it.
I think weve got one of the brightest young players in the game, stats say it all.'"
Burrow hasn't been anywhere near his best this season in all honesty (bad inury i think has effected his game).. But the burrow of last season (and many seasons before) would regularly break through the defensive line... something which myler doesn't do.
You can wave stats around all you want.... here's a stat for you... smith has dropped myler for not being good enough.

| Burrow 2009 - 257 Tackles, 250 Carries, 22 appearances.
Smith didnt drop him because hes not good enough, Smith dropped him tactically to accommodate players he thought would have a better approach to the gameplan he implemented, and it worked. Smith played Myler in what at the time was a VERY crucial match against Wigan away, or did you forget that??? He doesnt overnight be a player who can be good enough and then cant be. Coaches use tactics, thats why theyre employed.
If he wasnt good enough, Smith wouldnt have signed him.
No doubt you'll have a different opinion, about Myler not being up to standard,so we will agree to disagree. If you want a cheeky side bet of say a tenner, il happily back myler to play in 90% of next seasons games, injury dependent.
What you reckon?

i reckon that there's no way I am betting on a player playing or not.
for whatever reason smith suddenly decided to drop myler and now appears to have frozen him out.
Yes he scores tries... but as a half-back he doesn't really offer much with the ball in hand... well i dont see it anyway.... I will be honest... if smith decided to ship him out tomorrow i wouldn't lose any sleep over it.
I hope he comes good and turns out to be a fantastic signing.... but for that to happen i think he has to become alot stronger.. he HAS to add more to his game than support play.
Is he a good organiser - I havent seen it yet
Does he have a good kicking game - No... infact its bloody awful
Is he elusive enough to break the line - He doesnt seem to be
Does he have great ball skills - again I havent seen them.
Does he break the line with his strength and speed (like eastmond... and to an extent burrow) - again its a no
add to this the fact that he has been taken out of the team for being a defensive weak link and its obvious he has alot of improving to do.

| The physicality is massively underestmated.
Eastmond and Tomkins (to a lesser extent) are athletes, Myler at 19/20, is not.

| Again looking at the stats it seems that he does have the above qualities, but would i swap him for the likes of Tomkins, Burrow, Eastmond, then yes i would. I know where your coming from, but just trying to show it isnt as bad as it seems....

| Don't you just love this forum, we win the challenge cup, everything is hunky dory and the board is realtively quiet, nothing gets said about anything negative, we get knocked out of the play-offs, and this site is alive with negative activity/posts about Myler not getting on with Briers/having a go at Smith publicly/being sold to Hull FC, its pathetic, its almost as if Warrington fans love to whinge and moan
I think Myler is suffering from low self-confidence since being dropped for Wembley, something he needs to learn from as it happens from time to time

| EXCELS at his backup play without doubt. Is good for his age and experience at all other aspects of his game.
Look, lets face it, would TS pick him as an international half back and pay 200k for the guy if he didnt EXCEL over other players in his position?
Simple yes or no will do

He's johnny on the spot if someone makes a break, knack of being in the right place at the right time. He's also very quick over the first 20 metres. I wouldn't compare him with Rob Burrow he's more like a Danny McGuire. There is nothing wrong with having a half back that can't create as long as you have play makers in other positions like scrum half, hooker and loose forward.

| How can people compare Myler with Tomkins and Eastmond, how long have both of them been playing in their 1st team? 3 years i think, this is Mylers 1st year in the team and looking at them stats he hasn't done that bad, but yea let's all get on Myler's back, and let him turn out like Penny did, ffs people are still moaning after the season we have had.

Don't forget that briers missed a large chunk of the early season due to his injury against wigan and we managed to win most of the games in his absence.'"
It was the catalan game away. Then dropped to the bench for the semi due to catalan targeting him again. Then of course everything was rosey with wins all over the place.

| As for Kevin Penny he was never the same after the cup game at saints where he scored a fantastic try and then it all went tits up.
But expect to see him flying down the wing next season at Belle Vue.

| Lets not forget with Myler that he can add the more creative and organisational apsects to his game, especially given his age. Saying that I don't think he will ever be a lead halfback in our side, and thats not a bad thing. He will be an excellent fend to a half who organises and bosses a team around the field.

| I agree - just a case of first season-itis. Crikey King and Monas had it too and they ARE experienced. Fine and dandy now. I just wish Briers was younger. Myler would be superb supporting a young Lee, with Monas creating options too. I am sure this will still happen next season.
Oh and he excels at whipping the ball out of the opposition's hands

Another stat; Smith spent £200k on signing Myler and bringing him to the club. Smith immediately made him a starter and started him throughout the majority of our season. He was dropped for a couple of games at the back end of the season, IIRC before the final, Smith mentioned his defence and Myler being targeted. He took the safe option, it worked once, but didn't work the other times, that doesn't mean Smith doesn't think he's good enough, that doesn't mean that Smith wants to get rid, it means Tony decided that the tactics he wanted to use in those games didn't include Richie Myler, we're in a position luxurious enough to drop players like Myler, which is a great sign of the times, but people shouldn't write Richie or Tony off. People speculate and make up things, I remember when the texts were flying around before the final about him not playing, immediately people were spinning things, it was embarrassing and the consistent drivel put on here by most is also embarrassing.

But that's why TS has won trophies here and will continue to win them (IMO), whilst I feel Penny will probably go on to have an entertaining career, but probably lacking success.
Look at the top sides throughout the years, they rarely get away with not having 'complete' players in there. Richie isn't complete, he's very young and raw but has clear talent that he has shown throughout the season. At his age, at our level and coming from Salford's level, expecting him to step up and do everything was probably too much to ask, Smith knows that and I'm sure Richie will know that, too.
I liked Kev, he was a nice lad who shown bags of effort and desire, but look at Mathers for another great example - it isn't enough, you will be based on what happens on that field and, when you're constantly exposed like Kev was, you won't have too many more chances. Richie's lucky he plays in a position where young players rarely come in and command a spot, he's also lucky that our other half back 'options' (Briers, Mona's) aren't so young themselves, so he knows he is being groomed to fill either spot, he's just been unfortunate enough to not tickle the manager's fancy in the back end of the season. It's all part of the learning curve, and, as much as some like to speculate, that's all it is. As much as some will try and expose Smith, or try and speculate an inconsistency in his coaching, his decisions are purely professional IMO, so I will rarely disagree with a man who I feel makes every decision with acceptable reasons, even if they don't always come off.

Sadly, we lost that "none shall pass" defensive mantra halfway through the season and ended up conceding 84 points in the last 3 games.
