| Just read the no try that took an age for the video ref to decide on was not a double movement which it clearly was but for not grounding correctly.

| Disappointing to watch today. Wigan were no great shakes in attack baring a couple of bits from French. We just couldn't match their intensity. Their defence is top notch and reminds me of Saints a few years ago under Woolf. They just defend you out of the game along with an excellent kicking game. Then take their chances when they come along. I think a lot were expecting a free flowing attacking game from both sides but it was basically a grind all the way through and we came off second best. The second half was marginally better but at no point did we ever look like coming back even with the Dufty try.
One thing i don't think we have compared to Wigan is size in the back row and i think it showed today.
As disappointing as it was today. We only lost by 10 to a great well coached Wigan side. I'd have been more embarrased if Wigan racked up a cricket score as would have happened in years gone by. We have plenty of grit and effort to stay in there. Just not always the game smarts to get us through.

| King won't like watching the video back. That shoot out of the line to nail French and then miss was not his finest moment.
Ashton has had better games - knocking on playing the ball is all about composure. Brainless penalties from Bullock.
Abysmal kicking game.
But Wigan fully deserved the win. Our completion rate and errors ensured we would not challenge, and we have something to learn from (again).
Ps I really hope we have another pack signing for 2025

| Just got back in before the rematch initial thoughts.
Kendal wasn't as bad as I thought he would be a few niggles with the offsides and with Wigan players literally stood in front of him but he wasnt the determining factor.
Their first try looked offside cant wait to see it back.
Why did Liam Moore take so long to rule on the most obvious double movement ever.
That I have more patience than ithought when the guy sat behind me a lone Wigan fan gave me the benefit of the most one eyed commentary throughout the entire game.
We just weren't at it today too many unforced errors too much not respecting the ball, we just didn't click in attack at all.
We were chasing the game from the first dubious try and instead of "Trusting the process" we tried to force it. Took us 60 minutes to mount a cutting attack and we scored, very frustrating very much the hope that kills you.
Initial positives, thought Thewlis was good,
Defence other than dubious first try and a decent bit of skill from French and a good Direct run from Farrell was good nullified Marshall, Wardle, Miski threat from edges.
I hope this as others have said is a learning exercise and motivation, so that when we again get to knockout rugby and a final we go from minute 1 not minute 60.

No, haven't re-watched subsequently, but at the game yesterday, he looked culpable on some level for the first two Wigan tries unfortunately.

| One point I couldn`t understand is why Kendall stopped play after French attempted to touch down with his double movement/losing the ball in the process of scoring?
King picked-up the ball from our try line and set-off with a broken Wigan defence. He had Ashton in support and he would probably have scored.
Surely it should have been play on and then it would have been a video ref. decision to determine the outcome of the 2 incidents.

| I still can’t understand how that try wasn’t double movement? The tackle was complete. Ball carrying arm hit the deck?

| It WAS for a double movement. The VR came very close to giving it because for some reason the clown was looking for a knock on. You actually hear somebody say quietly that it needs to be checked for double movement and then he finally does and it gets ruled out.

| I’m also disappointed that I didn’t get to see a quality game of RL which I was expecting….us more at fault than Wigan obviously. Saw a twitter post that summed it up Wigan 5/10 Wire 2/10 and Officials 1/10, pretty much spot on.

| Won't let me quote but regarding Boss Hog's post, exactly the same thing happened in reverse during last week's game. Field picked the ball up with open space and the ref brought it back but then gave "no try".

| Never felt like we were in the game. There was a clear gulf in standards and Wigan are a well drilled and professional team who wasn't going to be broken down easily. We didn't offer enough to threaten their defence and we made too many errors which let them off the hook and meant we didn't put them under enough pressure to unsettle them.
Still, given where I thought we'd be at the start of the season (a mid table team which was very ordinary in terms of calibre of squad) we are ahead of schedule and I didn't expect Sam Burgess to have us in a Cup Final so soon.
Wigan have definitely got it right in terms of having a culture of building sustained success. This isn't the Maurice Lindsay Wigan of just buying up all the superstars and winning through having world class players in every position. Under Wane and now Peet they have been very good at bringing through local talent and supplementing them with good signings of players who aren't galacticos but have the right attitude and approach. They are always better than the sum of their parts. They play these big games like they play most games, they have a clear plan and are never overawed. Even their young players are well capable of handling big games.

| Good post. Hadn't their try scoring centre just played a handful of 1st team games?
I'm not buying the "12 men have not played in a final" argument. We had GF winners out there and CC final winners. The same team beat St Helens away. The mentality under pressure is still not resolved nor is the ability to change a game when it's falling apart. Was a thoroughly crap day out and the atmosphere was poor. Take nothing away from Wigan who, in truth, were not pushed very hard.
But we have improved on 2023. Lets see how they respond. 4 very winnable games up next then Wigan and Saints.

| How many plays came to nothing & errors made by our lads losing their footing ? I think we need to be working on the boots the team are wearing. We had plays coming to nothing with wayward passes either missing their target or going into touch. We had George Williams forcing short hospital passes onto forwards when maybe just keeping possession would have been better . We had a few occasions where ball carriers had opened up gaps & were looking for support but there was none. Matty Ashton ,usually Mr Reliable will be haunted by his errors for the rest of his life.
Ironically ,with 20 minutes to go we started to make improvements to handling of the game with front foot rugby. If we'd done that from the start the result may have been different. Plenty of ifs & buts but if you don't turn up with your best game in a final you don't get the victor's spoils.
Hopefully, the team will collectively learn from their disappointment.

| Been already said, too many players slipping over and too many errors. That was the main issue as to why we never looked like winning that game. The other thing was our sixth tackle play, it took over an over to get a grubber behind their goal line and earn a drop out, which was very reflective of our poor execution on the day.
Disappointing, were better than what we showed.

| I've not had a chance to replay the full match but it was clear we were 2nd best in most - if not all - areas.
And again penalties/basic mistakes were a telling factor. Allegedly 9 in the 1st half. You're up against it with that number. It didn't allow us to build pressure as we were more often than not coming out of our own 10.
Ashtons dropped ball led to their first try and Bullocks penalty the 2nd.
Wigan targetted King and his ability to turn quickly - hence the 1st try, but Wigans kick execution was perfect and I think most centres would have struggled against that.
Regarding Wigans' 'drilling' - because they have a great youth pipeline they have had not months, but years, of being drilled. Hence when the likes of Eckersley step up they are - more often than not - ready.
Really frustrating and disappointing as Wigan didn't really have to do THAT much.
I hate to say it but the Wembley experience isn't as good as it used to be. That's nothing to do with the result or the quality of the games.
65k for the day with 2 of the better supported teams but masses of empty seats in the top tier and a fair few elsewhere....... whereas there were 85k at Twickenham for their final. (Can League learn anything??).
I'd really want the CCF to stay at Wembley but it has to be near capacity.

| Done the full rewatch, the few things that i saw second time around.
Our initial starts to the halves werent as bad as I thought. The sIn bins were poor decisions.
How much I wished that Tai intercept had stuck.
The 1st Wigun try was onside, brilliant bit of timinig and skill.
Once we went behind we forced it too much and as others had said that rain shower before kick off left the surface greasy didn't realise how many times we slipped.
Not sure Fitzgibbon or Crowther were right for the game Holroyd should have been in.
Kendall really didn't seem to like Matt Dufty.
Scramble and effort was there.
Sick of losing finals to Wigun, but feel we can beat them.
Need a response against Salford , a measured and clinical one not a panicky pressured one.

| On Wembley experience I enjoyed most apart from the result,
I think the history etc keep at Wembley and the question of where else for me going to venues sub 70k to make them appear full is crazy.
What we need is a settled date and venue, get it back to being a tradition. Yes GF and magic weekend have diluted things but it's still has some magic for me.
One thing I did find a little funny was how many Wiguners didn't stay to see their team lift the trophy. I always stay to the end but after full time I wanted to be off just didn't expect so many Wiguners on the tube at the same time, if Wire had pulled it off I'd have stayed.

| What was frustrating to watch wasn’t how we struggled to contain Field and French, even though they did terrify us whenever they had the ball. What was most concerning was the difference in ruck speed. Even when we found our feet after 60 minutes or so, they were calmer and more efficient in the ruck. We didn’t find a way to speed our play the ball up often enough. When we did though, we found little pockets of room.
We were desperate to get out in front early. On the back of a sin bin, we go wide to Tai and make a break, get in their territory and instead of keeping the ball and making them pay while being down to 12, we give it to the winger, who was never going to score, and turn it over and end up with a yellow ourselves.
That 10 minutes should have seen us bring the ball back to the middle, work the middle over and over and over and over and roll it in the in goal. We took nothing out of their tank, at all, despite losing a starting prop.
It was frustrating to watch. We really needed a momentum shift off the bench, but the subs came on in the wrong order in my opinion. Musgrove didn’t make it on until the second half, Bullock made some decent yards but costs more in penalties, and Crowther is all effort but didn’t do enough to change the momentum.
Wigan played finals rugby, deserved the win. But still, we stayed in the fight.

I think Wire's lack of final experience was a big factor to be honest. Thinking back to Peet's first final against Huddersfield, we had a few players (Bateman, Farrell, Leuluai, Singleton) who had experience of winning big finals but most didn't. We ended up winning, but our performance was less than brilliant and we could've very, very easily lost that game. Had we played a better team than Hudds, we probably would've done.
I think Wire will bounce back pretty well until the end of the season and there's a better than decent chance that the GF will be a rematch. If it is, I'd be amazed if Wire don't turn in a much stronger performance.
One thing that did surprise me a bit was the age of your team though. Obviously it's far away from being an old squad, but I had it in my head that there were more youngsters in there than is actually the case. You'd probably only put Thewlis and Nicholson in that category.

| As a team probably the worst they have played, but only 10 points in it. The only positive to take away from it. Wayward passes in silly areas and too many unforced errors. No player goes out there to make errors, just wasn’t Warringtons day, got no complaints about the result. One thing that I did notice was the crossing that wasn’t pulled by Kendall. But hopefully more finals to come.

| I'm not encouraged by the score line as I think Wigan took the foot off the gas in attack and defended their lead. They were/are miles better than us. I didn't expect us to win but I thought I would see a good contest in a great atmosphere. I got neither, that is what I am most disappointed about. We are on the path to getting better but until we get an on field influence who can steady the ship when the going gets tough we are always going to struggle.
It was our experienced players who :
1. Passed into touch / passed to Ashton 2 foot above his head.
2. Grubber kicked on 2nd tackle when we were in their 10m.
3. Shot out of the line to nail French and miss.
4. Failed to effect any type of kicking game
5. Gave stupid high tackle penalty away leading to Wigan try.
Without naming them, those players have all been in finals before.
