My missus is from Widnes and that's what she calls it, the wrong un. They've got a load of other little phrases. It's like they are from a different planet. Well they are 25,000 miles away from us.
She tells me that they call Chips and peas a split in St Helens. Another bunch of Wrong uns.

just i would rather pronounce my words properly, it was a bit of a sweeping statement as most people do talk normal. Sorry for the offence

Speaking for myself I was not offended, just a bit of banter (which does not seem to come over sometimes on forums) in fact I'm a bit upset you thought you offended me...
As soon as I get offended on a forum I dissapear, as arguing online is a silly pastime.

| Grew up on Kongs in latchford - gravy had the texture of cement. Love it.
Nowadays probably Mike and Martha's or Thee Plaice near the King and Queen.

| Quote ="the flying biscuit"I think the Chip shop industry is in a sorry state to be fair….the finest Chip shop bar none used to be the Neptune bar in Stockton heath (now Called Pannys I think)..They smelt like chips, looked like chips, and tasted like chips. The menu was roughly about the size of an A3 piece of paper…..Chips, Fish, Sausage, peas, Beans, gravy, Curry, and a selection of pies.
That’s all you need….
Then a close 2nd and 3rd were The two Harry’s Chip shops, the one opposite Vicky park and the one next to Penketh paints near the borough arms. Sadly like a good old fashioned pub they have long gone. (turned to a Chinese takeaway/chipper)
now its all sorts of junk on sale, burgers, Salt n pepper Chips, donna meat… what’s a chip shop doing Donna meat for ?…for that you go to a Kebab Shop.
And the worst of all sins is those places that cant cook chips properly from a fresh potato. Usually a Chinese Chip shop…they have them half cooked and waiting in the chipping basket ready to be re-dipped in the hot fat giving the appearance they have been freshly cooked.
I really would struggle to name one Chip shop that does consistently good, fresh, non Soggy Chips….
Blairs Britain my friends….'"
Top post.....The state of Warrington's chip shops are an example of what happens when you let foreigners take over the running of the majority of the shops....Most have little clue how to cook a simple portion of fish & chips, without turning it into a soggy mess....They are simply driven by the desire to make quick cash without any thought for the quality of the food they serve.
Its a shame, but in this day and age, if you want good fish & chips you have to travel to Cornwall or the Whitby/Scarborough area of North Yorkshire.

| Disagree with the last post, the Chinese in Parksway Woolston is brilliant. Also in Yorkshire they tend to use dripping like we used to round here about 40 years ago, all it does with me is repeat on me.

I think you'll find the proper way to cook chips is to fry them twice, definitely what you'll see in Belgium where they almost worship the frites.
But not just the continentals - checkout this from closer to home

| Someone mentioned Cornwall..... The best Fish and Chips I ever consumed were from Polperro but that was a few years ago and it could well be a Chinese now. It was Elsies or Eileens....or something beginning with E anyhow.
