His tinkering and big mouth cost us the league in 2008-2009 with his outburst at the owners (maybe justified but not the Liverpool way) & Fergie. Too many LFC fans are still living on 2005 (yes probably one of the greatest days of my life being there). We need to wake up and realise we are a country mile behind Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs, City. Rafa has spent more money than Utd, Arsenal & Spurs during his time in charge so i still can't understand his poverty claims. Its a pity so called "fans" couldn't see the bigger picture beyond Rafa and instead listen to the bolllocks of there Manc mates.
Few years of nothing should get rid of the glory boys which would be a good thing.

Sometimes i'm ashamed of where i'm from.
It's not so bad, a few years without winning, (i'm a wigan fan i know you can live off past success for much longer than that) oh no you must be the worst football club in the world and a laughing stock to the rest of the league
As somebodys just said, it will get rid of some fo the glory boys, thank god, the moterways into here are packed on matchdays.

| Benitez was apparently quoted saying he would need £50 million JUST to get Liverpool back into a champions league spot, never mind win league. And as he has spent more than most clubs in the top four for many years, he tinkering and his questionable decisions made the announcement unsurprising. Just surprised it's took so long.

Not been on here for a while so only just seen this thread, but feel inclined to comment.
The only people responsible for turning us into a laughing stock are the two American owners, and the sooner the majority of the tabloid led sheep like yourself realise that the better. I for one don't see the problem with flag burning, as it pales in comparison to what these American idiots are doing to our great footballing institutions, and that includes Man Utd as well.
Rafael Benitez has been a great servant to the club, someone who understands the Liverpool way, and has brought some great times to the club. He is a highly respected manager throughout Europe, yes he's made mistakes but who hasn't? In recent times his hands have been tied in the transfer market, so the squad has deteriorated gradually, yet some want rid of him after one bad season.
Benitez deserves better than LFC in its current state, and I see he is about to join the current European champions, while we will be left with someone of far lesser standing and ability like Martin O'Neill.

Deary me, you're a bit deluded there. I think DJ Birchy Ford Clinic has spoke a lot of sense on Benitez and if anything has gone against the sheep who think Benitez is some god like managerial genius. Your owners have been bad but Benitez has hid been that for his own purposes. The flag burning was a bit pathetic really, it shouldn't have anything to do with where they are from. It made me laugh though that there were people there wearing replica shirts but burning the flag.
Benitez has spent more money than any other club bar the bottomless pit that they have at Chelsea and City, so why do his supporters always say he hasn't had the funds. Hasn't he signed around 65 players in the five or so years he has been there.
So what are these great times he brought. He won the Champions League in 2005 which is fair enough and you can't knock him for that but when you look at that campaign it took a goal 4 minutes from the end of the last game in the group stages to qualify. Group stages where you were beat by Grazer AK, Monaco and Olympiakos. Then in the semis you only won because of a goal that didn't even cross the line. You were lucky to only go in 3 nil down in the final and it took a typical Gerrard tumble in the area to get you back level and how Shevchenko missed that last minute chance I'll never know.
The only other bit of success was drawing in the FA Cup final against the mighty West Ham (another last minute goal to thank as well)
Last season, he cost you the league. It wasn't just his rant which was ill judged, ill timed and basically rubbish, some of the decisions he made in games were terrible. I seem to recall him making a load of tactical changes and substitutions that just didn't work, plus his reluctance to attack some of the lesser teams which ended up costing in the end with too many draws. That was the best chance you had of winning the league in years. You managed to beat your nearest rivals home and away and had the fortune of playing against 10 men in around 9 or 10 games including against the other top 8 clubs.
Most United fans are gutted that Benitez as left and I think that says everything.

| Massimo Moratti must be brainwashed as well then, into thinking that Benitez is a good enough manager to take over the reins at the incumbent European Champions.
Who do you think should be next in the Anfield hotseat then Birchy?

I see Benitez like Emile Heskey, everyone seems to rate him but i don't see why.
I really don't know who i want as the new manager, i just know we needed one. My heart says Dalglish but my brain says maybe Harry Redknapp or John Toshack. I'd like to stay British but i don't like Martin O'Neill and i don't believe in Roy Hodgson much either.
Its gonna be a tough time whatever happens so better strap ourselves in

| Rafa obviously has something, his record in the Champions League, up till this season, was outstanding, and he had one season of (2008/09) of being nearly there in terms of winning the league. I think if Ronaldo had gone to Real Madrid a year earlier like everybody thought he would, Rafa would have won a league title with Liverpool.
In my opinion the biggest problem he had wasn't his squad rotation or substitutions etc which were often criticised, but Rafa is one of those coaches who has a good brain for football but less for getting on with people, which is a trait which has held back a few others (Hoddle, Souness). Most Liverpool fans quite liked the fact he didn't get on with the owners but it was a bigger problem that he didn't get on particularly well with Gerrard and a few of the other players. Most of the pundit commentary from the ex-players who are still 'in the loop' with the current crop is that Gerrard didn't get on with him and Torres had lost faith in him which was a big big problem.
At Valencia he had also fallen out with people so maybe that's just how he is....the trick is to fall out with the people you can afford to fall out with and keep the right people onside, like Mourinho does. He does know his football and if he goes to Inter Milan then they will be there or thereabouts again in the Champions League every year, in fact I bet half the Liverpool fans can see the script already being written ahead for Benitez knocking them out of Europe in a year or so....
I can see why people will think that Liverpool will end up with a less able football manager but I think Rafa had reached a point where he was becoming a negative rather than a positive on the club, last season should have been warning enough of that, I don't think he could have continued without there being long term damage to the club.

| Personally, I think Rafa was an half decent tactician, who couldn't deal in the transfer market for toffee.
He took Houllier's side to Champion's League glory, whilst at the same time allowing a mediocre Everton side to finish above them in the league.....He needed a director of football to take charge of the transfer dealings, and leave him to try and get the best from them. The truth is, if he was running any normal business, he'd have been sacked years ago for his financial incompetence.
Morientes, Bellamy, Keane, etc, the big money thrown down the drain is simply embarrassing for a so called top manager....Whilst the Liverpool fans' loyalty is admirable, the truth is he had run his course. Last season was terrible and blaming the owners is simply a smokescreen for Rafa's inadequcies.

I agree, I'm not a Manure fan indeed I'm not a Wendyball fan at all.
I just find great contentment by thinking of all the distress and consternation at LFC now seeing how they crowed and crowed in the 80's. LFC are as far, if not further, away from winning a league title as they have been since 1990 (20 years ago and counting).
Indeed never in LFC history have they gone 20 years without winning a league title since 1923-46.
