someone in my wifes work has got symptoms so she has had the last 2 days off causing my wife to gain 2 days overtime

On a serious note here,

After seeing the front pages of todays newspapers I think the media are a complete disgrace. They are intent on whipping people up into hysteria over this swine flu thing. Some of the reporting is absolutely appalling and in bad taste. They only seem to report on the negatives when the facts are;

- That the deaths are only in line with normal seasonal flu fatality rates.

- Many thousands of people are getting very mild symptoms and are making full and speedy recoveries including those seen as high risk groups.

Its idiotic reporting like this that is causing a massive strain on the nhs and GP surgerys.

The only thing the government is not doing which it should and that is to stop the media from acting in this irresponsible and reckless way.

i believe theres been something mentioned about horse flu coming next from ireland.

The media are just reporting the worst case scenario though - which to an extent you would expect from the media - and if people look beyond the headlines then in most cases they are very good at giving the whole picture, but dramatic headlines draw peoples attention.

To a certain extent though perhaps an element of panic in a situation like this is good if it makes people more aware of the illness and makes them react quickly if they show signs as this could help reduce the severity of their case (the sooner you get the medication the better) and if they are diagnosed then they can reduce/stop contact with others to reduce the spread.

I'm scared stiff, not been out the house for 11 days now. Will do like, once it all dies down. I'm sat here now, with surgical gloves on, reading the TV Quick, awesome. I'll type this, then i'm off to wash my hands.

Shows that the media have too much influence over people's opinions. If it wasn't reported as much as it has been, no one would know or care about it.

I think employers need to be responsible too, if any of their employees get this flu then they should be allowed to take time off work until they are fully recovered.

All too often we see employers who actively encourage (threaten) people to turn into work when they are probably not fit to do so.

The catering industry especially are notorious for not being sympathetic to illness of its staff.

If you were talking about Katie and Peter splitting up (or other such similar things regularly reported) then I could agree that not knowing or caring would be ok but I really can't see how not telling people about a pandemic can have any positive effect.

To be fair in the cases of those who I know who have it/have had it that is certainly the case for them.

Going off the number of potential casualties reported in this mornings press I wouldn't be surprised if the UK's economy ground to a complete halt. There simply wont be enough people left alive or well enough to keep these businesses operating according to the tabloids.

Do you think we're all (sorry the few of us who survive) are going to wake up one morning and find it like a scene from 28 days later!!!

To put a little reality into the situation, its worth realising that of all these 'cases' of swine flu currently being reported, about 10% will be actual, real swine flu, the rest will be people panicking or simply exaggerating their symptons over the phone so as to get their hands on some Tamiflu.

As another poster has suggested, things would be helped if the media stopped treating this virus as something that threatens the future of the human race, and instead reported the real facts, that are simply that there is a flu bug doing the rounds.

My post was a somewhat tongue in cheek dig at the media darling.

Spoken to a mate's mum today who teaches at Beaumont (sp), and she was saying it's well spread, and she had minor symptons or something along those lines.

Not sure if she was mixed up on what swine flu is or whatever, but it seemed strange for an apparent teacher to keep on teaching if she had swine flu

Every hyperchondriac/drama queen in the UK has 'minor' symptons...its in vogue to have it....



Teaching would be the furthest thing on her mind if she had the real deal....Sadly, every pillock who has a scratchy throat seems to think they have swine flu...

Exactly the sort of people that go the doctors over the slightest thing. When the GP says "I think the problem is you may be a hyperchondriac" they reply "Oh no I've not got that as well have I".

I'm no doctor but......wouldnt minor symptoms simply be a cold....?????

That's what I thought myself. I haven't a clue about this swine flu, so I was just putting my little story out there to clear things up
