| Trust me the signing fee for Myler's contract is already agreed. The figure Salford want is £250,000. It's thought Warrington have agreed to pay that, Wigan however have not but have shown interest. Concidering that Myler only has less than a year to the next contract tampering date then that is a big price.
The Gleeson deal was only £100,000 and he had almost two years left on his contract.
It's nothing new that Warrington have paid a big fee before, remember that Warrington have already paid £220,000 for Gleeson when he had only a season and a half left on his contract.
In that deal, Warrington became the first club in almost two years to sign a player for a fee!
The daily noises coming from Offiah at the moment is because he wants clubs to thrash it out so he and his client get more money.
As I said Salford want to sell, and sell fast, but they can't get a deal until Offiah is sure that he has run this course the full distance and has gotten every penny he and Myler can get from it.

As he is under 22 when his contract expires, if Salford offer him an improved contract than the one he is on, he is NOT classed as a free agent and they can demand a fee. So maybe not...

As long as its an improvement to his current contract a fee will be needed as he is under 22.

| I think we would be crazy to go into next season with a half back pairing of Myler and Monaghan (that's if Briers does leave). But whatever Smith decides to go with I will trust.
250k is way too much to be asking for IMO though. He is going well at the moment but a fee that large for a player as untested as he is could turn out to be a disaster.

| If we have to face another year of Monaghan at halfback, I think I'll cry. It's actually making me sad watch him now. He needs to go back to the NRL, tear it up, and let us chat amongst ourselves about why we make players look bad.

Or it could be a fantastic move where you get a great player for the next 10 years. A fee is going to have to be paid after he contract is up anyway.

I agree a fee of that amount if far too much, and there are no guarantees we hold onto him for 10 years anyway. He isn't going to sign a contract for 10 years now is he......

Very true and it is a fixed formula that anybody can see on the RFL website. Myler's fee would be about £10k; I think we could stretch to that.

| I reckon the fee for Myler will be approx £200k.
And for the record he is coming to the wire as he wants to play under tony smith, that is the draw as far as the lad is concerned.

spoken to Myler I take it and he's personally told you he is coming to the wire and wants to be coached by Tony Smith....
Instead of guessing I will wait to see what is announced personally, you may be right in what you said but no one can be certain of whats happening unless your name is Myler or Offiah

If given a straight choice of anywhere he would be at Leeds or Saints but this isnt going to happen as Leeds dont need him and Saints have a couple of bright young halfbacks so wont splash cash for the same thing.

You've forgotten this part of the formula:
Quote C1:3:18 The Operational Rules Tribunal shall be entitled to determine compensation for
Contract Expired Players in line with the procedures set out in C1:3:21 below in the
following circumstances:
(a) Where a Club has signed a Player and either Club believes it can show good cause
why the Compensation Formula does not apply in which case the determination isbinding;
(b) Where a Club wishes to sign a Player and believes it can show good cause why
the Compensation Formula does not apply and wishes to request a Conditional
Compensation hearing in which case the Club wishing to sign the Player can
decide whether to accept the determination;
(c) Where a Player in receipt of a Compensation Valuation believes he can shown
good cause why the valuation of Compensation made by his former Club does not
apply in which case the determination is estimated and not binding.
CONDITIONAL COMPENSATION
C1:3:19 Where two clubs are unable to reach agreement as set out in C1:3:15 and where the
Former Club provides a Statement of Case showing why it does not believe the
Compensation Formula applies or the New Club does not believe that the formula
applies then the Club wishing to sign a Player instead apply to the RFL to request that
the Operational Rules Tribunal determines Conditional Compensation.
(i) in assessing the level of compensation, the Operational Rules Tribunal shall take into
account:
(i) the compensation formula;
(ii) the age, experience (including Representative experience), reputation and potential of
the Player;
(iii) any costs incurred by the selling Club in training or developing the Player;
(iv) the fee originally paid for the Player (if any);
(v) the value of contracts offered by the selling Club to its other current Players and the
length of time during which the Player was with the selling Club;
PLAYERS
Operational Rules – Section C1 - Players – Issue 7 – February 2009
(vi) all and any other relevant criteria which the Operational Rules Tribunal in its absolute
discretion may think fit.
'"
Basically, it shows that the £10k as a contract-expired player would not be acceptable and the compensation fee would therefore be decided by Tribunal. Based on potential, etc, it would be considerably more.

Actually what this tries to do is re-dress a club where it has developed a junior player - hence reference to time he has been at the club etc.
They would take into account that you got him from Widnes for nothing because Widnes were on the edge of oblivion and could not offer him a contract.
There is no way Salford would risk going to a tribunal with Myler. If he doesn't sign a new deal this year (which personally I would consider un-likely) Salford will sell to teh highest bidder - which I believe would be Warrington if they want him. I cannot believe we wouldn't want him.

They'd also take into account his age, increased development and potential whilst at Salford, the fact that he gained representative honours whilst at Salford - would certainly be considerably more than the £10k you stated.

Potential, it can go either way upto a determining point. I think Myler is still a fair way from that point. A lot has been made of Myler's inclusion for the two French games, but I see that as a learning curve, not anything more.
I do think he has a great deal of potential, but he stll has a long way to go to realise it.

More than £10k but considerably less than what they could realise the coming close season. Salford are in the position Warrington were in with Harris and Sculthorpe ie not in a position to refuse a hard cash offer.
Salford did exceptional business to pick him up when they did. He was by far the stand-out performer in youth rugby at his age (hat-trick against the Aussies) and already had first grade experience at 17. He slipped under the radar of plenty of clubs who must now be kicking themselves, although top be fair I don't remember much of a clamour from people on here saying we should have signed him at the time.

I agree. His defence is still pretty suspect, and he has a lot to learn about the game. There have been many players of his age that have had the potential yet not fulfilled it - as a Wire supporter, you would possibly class Penny in that category. Luke Robinson was the best thing since sliced bread for a while, but has not reached the heights expected.
I'd love us to keep hold of him, and build a team around him as he develops, but I fear it will be difficult. However, and no disrespect to Warrington, I don't believe Wire are the team he should go to. They will want instant results, and as he has not yet fulfilled the potential, it may be too much pressure on him.
