I hope he knows he has a few more year left, with a smart fitness regime and a careful use of his appearances, he could give us another 3-5 years.

I am serious when I say, I think he deserves a statue. Probably more like the Cunnigham one at sts, than the Bevan one. Maybe they should have left a spot ready for it when they were extending the stadium.

Nobody should have a statue when they are still alive. Its creepy.

Still never been forgiven by Wigan fans for all those drop goals in the 1986 Premiership Semi Final (was it five?).

Bishop was playing when i started watching Wire, do you know i was only 8 in 86 Teesside

When I started watching the halfbacks were Willie Aspinall and Parry Gordon. Bishop's dad was playing for Saints then! Bish wasn't even a twinkle in his Dad's eye.
I was 10 by the way. Good St Thomas' C of E lad.

Indeed and me and I have never seen anyone in the P&B with as much creative ability as Lee Briers. If he hadn't played for us I think his reputation would have been even higher.

A true great of the game if you ask me and considering what I see going on in junior and youth rugby we will not see the like of him again.

Am I the only one who looks at Lee and thinks he's one of the game's great underachievers?

Outrageously skilled player with so many attributes that are 'rare' in the modern game, you do wonder what Lee would have done had he had a coach like Smith around for 10 years or so. Scary.

You'd think someone like GO'B would be schooled by Briers to help turn him into the next great white hope.

He has played in some SHOCKING teams though.

I think that most of us are of the same opinion. It's only towards the end of his career that Lee has really knuckled down, however you could also go back 10-12 years and look at DVDV and Steve Anderson who both tried to replace him. DVDV brought in Walters, Blakely, and Georgallis, whilst Anderson tried to turn him into a fullback and brought in Tommy O'Reilly, who had spent the previous season at Bramley. We're very fortunate that he didn't spit the dummy out and leave then.

Of course he has, but that sort of points to him underachieving. A player possessing that much skill should retire with a garage full of accolades and achievements, when you look at him now, you can't help but feel a little sad that a player of his quality has spent so much time playing in some shocking teams.

Briers, to me, is a bit of an enigma.
Had Lee not 'spat his dummy out' at Stains, because Goulding took his place at Wembley, after he helped get them there, who's to know what halfback partnership he'd have forged with Long...possibly one of the best of all time????????

Would I swap him...never, I just wish we'd have had Dr Who's TARDIS in 1997, where we could have had Smith's (current) wisdom, inputted into a young Briers brain....oh those wasted years GGGGGRRRRRR.

Maybe it made him hungrier undr TS. Watching him in 2009 at wembley, he was the best man on the field (slightly better than monas) and in 2010, I have never seen a hungrier player. Everything worked and he made leeds (the champs) look shocking.

Would he had delivered for us on the biggest stage without those wasted years?
