| ....and theres me reading this Topic expecting to have some sort of narrative on the events of last night, like, what did Hicksy say, what did Clarkey say, was he surprised that when he came out on Sunday he was cheered, and not the usual boo's (which I think have tongues firmly in cheek by the way...).
But no, it has deteriorated into the usual inane slagging off of posters, I knew there was a reason I haven't bothered here for a while.

Good night last night with a great top table of guests who all contributed well: John Bastian, Ryan Shaw, Gareth O'Brien, Rhys Evans, Jon Clarke, Ben Evans, Chris Hicks. Interesting to hear their answers to a range of topics and a few good laughs too.
The Q&A was followed by the AGM which included a summary of the events of the Trust over the past year and of the accounts, detailing the income raised and where money has been spent via Squadbuilder on helping youth development via team sponsorship, kit and equipment purchases, training and team-building events etc at all levels from u12s through to u20s.
Slight negative was that it was another poor turnout - STILL don't understand why these sorts of events aren't more attractive to fans. Everyone who does go seems to enjoy them. Why don't more turn up?
I only ask because it would be great if we could increase the number of members we have in Squadbuilder and/or the Trust. This would have several benefits. We could raise more money to support the youth development in more great ways than we already are. We could act as more of a representative voice and ears between the club and the fanbase. Thinking wider, we had Laura Harrison from [url=http://www.supporters-direct.org/Supporters Direct[/url (the umbrella organisation of all Trusts) and she talked about how the more RL Trusts there are and the more members each one has, the more weight SD has when it does things like talking to Government about support for the Sport.
If anyone has any (geniune) points or queries they want to raise, feel free. Either here, or via one of the Trust Board members. Check out the website too for more info:

Bastian had nothing to do with the real 'stars' of the Leeds youth, Burrow Mcguire, Mathers, JJB, and Bailey.
The vast majority of the great youngsters that have come through the Leeds system were nurtured by Dean Bell who set Leeds' youth structure up, and, IMO, it's no coincidence that Wigan's youth structure turned out top class players after Dean Bell joined them after Leeds.
No dis-respect to what John Bastian has been doing at Leeds, but he's not been as succesful as most people think

| Glad someone agrees with me.
For the record, the Wolves Squadbuilder is a fantastic initiative and should be supported by everyone as should the other similar schemes at other clubs. The people behind the scenes at Wire do a great job and have done for a great many years, and for a fraction of John Bastians £60k salary (couldn't help the last dig, sorry).

They haven't agreed with you, quite the opposite. You clearly state it was Stuart Wilkinson who yielded Sinfield, Burrow and McGuire, not Dean Bell.
So to whom do we credit?

Pretty sure it has been referred to in the Warrington Guardian (they certainly have in the past), certainly this one via League Express, stadium concourses, club shop and club website. I think there were tannoy announcements at half-time on Sunday. Short of following Wigan and doing an advert before The Bill I don't know what more people could do.
I wonder whether a back page advert on the Guardian might pay off?
Whenever people attend these evenings they are nigh-on always glowing in their feedback yet get people out of their arm-chairs to attend is a thankless task.

That's pretty comprehensive marketing Sean (I wasn't making a dig by the way). I don't recall I have seen anything in the concourse nor in the shop (but I go to the shop only once pcm). I did see a "Don't mickey the future way" poster in the Gents at Wilderspool. I think the Guardian idea has merit and it could work as part of a FOC "infomercial" i.e) a nice, interesting, inside piece about the outcomes from the event (editorial) together with dates for the forthcoming (advert).
I must admit I'm a member of both ST and SqB and haven't been to any event (since 2002) which I know is my loss and reflects poorly on me. I always think of a reason not to go. It maybe because I am shy and think that those who do are sort of uber-fans. However I think it would be nice to receive an email with the outcomes following the event (i.e. financials, key announcements, developments, strategy, vision, photos, AGM stuff etc) and that may whet my appetite enough for me to get off my backside and attend.
I'm speculating now - Maybe the marketing is fine and broad, and it's just the way the offering is presented that doesn't make it compelling? Or maybe as you say we are a lethargic lot.
Anyway to all involved in both SqB and ST keep up the good work

| Maybe an idea (an off the top of my head brainstorm without thinking of logistics in terms of availability of staff, players and function rooms) would be to stage an event directly after a home game? It maybe having 10,000 people in the vicinity together with a compelling tannoy announcement throughout the game and FOC entry may get a good number of first timers to attend and then a good number to enrol into the programme?

If your not on any of them websites or buying a programme you might not hear about the meetings or really even know about Squadbuilder.
I still think leaflets handed out at home games telling people what Squadbuilder does and the aims of it etc would help spread the word, as its a way to target all of the match day support.

Dean Bell! He made Leeds a team brimming with local stars, then turned Wigan into a team with the luxury to be able to sell Briscoe, Wild, Brown, Robinson, Aspinall and still promote O'Loughlin and Hansen et al!
As good as Bastian may or may not be, he's been riding coat-tails so far in his career!

Just to answer this point we have noticeboards in every concourse at the stadium that advertises our events and also explains what Squadbuilder is about. We have tried leafleting in the past, the problem with leaflets is that they just end up as litter or are made into paper aeroplanes. The club have sent out information for us with each season ticket renewal notice. One season we sent out 6000 and we actually recruited one member.
Saying all this we welcome all ideas that would lead to recruiting more members.

| I think unless it is a truly unique type of forum like meet the new Head Coach you are flogging a bit of a dead horse. Attendance figures are generally low because the majority of middle of the road speccies know they are likely to hear something they have already read online or in a newspaper. Coaches and players are too savvy to drop any real juicy info. The more successful events appear to be things like the Quiz Night which enables speccies to meet players in a more informal an enjoyable setting.

Maybe. Ladies night seems to work though. Perhaps we need to be more base. Indeed can we have a gentlemans evening with a blue comedian, cheap ale, pie and peas and one of those tidy sorts from the club shop on a pole?
I'm joking of course.
No, I still think the issue of low attendance can be sorted with creative thinking but the product needs to be right.

| Ideas ?
a)As standard print on the back of all tickets
b)Couple of local announcements on the radio, instead of paying for an advertising slot get one of the players to go down and talk briefly with the DJ
c) instead of multi dropping leaflets, just make up a few posters and target selective areas, Colleges, Gyms, Sports clubs, pubs, mens clubs, mens type shops, put up a big advertising billboard up on the stadium.
d) a little stall in the shopping centre similar to those people who try to get you to change energy supplier or get a new credit card.
e) reassure people. people fell put off (said previous) they think these events are for uber fans that could recall every match and every player for the last 10 years and are slightly intimidated
