John Gallagher one of the first Kiwi RU -> RL coverts in the mid 80's. Got tackled in first few games for Leeds, never fancied it after that, currently residing as a head master I believe. He was a huge signing at the time and it turned to for him, and turned quickly. He allowed his biography (pre-RL) to be entitled "The World's Greatest Rugby Player?". the question mark is clearly ironic now but wasn' then. I think a part-time player from the RL in a particularly hard spear tackle proved he wasn't. It was a big thing back then. Christ I am showing my age.

This biography is designed to appeal to both Rugby Union and Rugby League fans as it tells the story of John Gallagher. In 1984 John went on a six month trip to New Zealand - having no initial intentions of staying. Once there he started to play Rugby Union and after six months he decided to remain. Within two years he had been selected for the New Zealand All Blacks and in 1987 became a member of the All Black team that won the World Cup. In 1990 he was made a High Chief in Western Samoa and voted International Player of the Year. Later that year he turned professional and returned to Britain to play for Leeds Rugby League Football Club. And herein lies the end of the story.

As a Leeds supporter since 1987, I confess to seeing this terrible failure
However, as decorated players go, David Young was potentially just as useless a convert. I was only about 14 when he signed for Leeds, but I do remember him being relatively schit, and he then went on to Salford or somewhere, before going back to RU I think! He was dreadful in league, a potentially worse convert than Gallagher, who was maybe unlucky after his spear tackle incident. He did score against the touring Aussies in '91 IIRC!
Rob Ackerman was a former British Lion as well that played for Leeds. He didn't tear up many trees either. But he did look like the Incredible Hulk. Or David Banner. Was that his name before he went green? |
