| Quote ="Thelonius"About 1:35 in.
I certainly wouldn't blame the RFL. If anyone is to blame then it's Richard Bacon, and his production team. They managed to produce several minutes of apparently unrehed, amateurish and cringeworthy radio which would have sounded just as poor whatever the topic. Sadly the topic was RL.
The BBC give the impression that RL is a 'job' that they don't particularly want to do but have to do. Perhaps, for each round, a few players should be available to go buying and selling (at a loss) antiques from antique fairs. Others could do a bit of cooking, maybe some ballroom dancing or research their family tree. Maybe then we'd get better RL coverage even if it is only as the background story as to why Kevin Sinfield has decided to prepare Confit of salmon with new potato & crab crush & dill drizzle.'"
My mind always goes back to Paul Younge saying that
Quote Rugby league has sold its soul to Sky, and it has to live with that. For rugby league fans we've got a very good online presence, we are carrying the Challenge Cup and we have highlights of the England internationals in the autumn.
But the sport has done its deal with Mr Murdoch, and that's something rugby league fans have to deal with. If you live in the north of England there is the Super League Show, which is a regional transmission, and if you really want to see rugby league outside of the north, you should write to your local BBC and see if they'll carry it as a local transmission.'"
In contrast though the interview with Chris Evans which I mentioned above was brilliant and did the sport justice.

I'll tell you what offends me and it's paradoxical, i'm offended by people who are offended by the tiniest of things, the inconsequential things.
Plus i'll add the idiots of RL who blame anything and everything on the RFL to the list of people whi offend me.

This thread is about yesterday's cup draw.
None of the other items you have added to your viewpoint are relevant; and I agree with you on them.
It isn't complex to conduct a cup draw in a professional and efficient manner and the RFL have managed to get it right on many, many previous occasions.
They got it very wrong yesterday though.
There were three people involved and none of them carried it off particularly well.
An all too irregular opportunity to market the sport on a national broadcast was well and truly botched.
And, yes, in the overall scheme of the planet it is a very, very minor thing.
But this is a rugby league forum and I fully understand why people found yesterday hugely disappointing and have expressed that on here.

| As a radio presenter broadcasting on one of the major radio networks in the world you would expect far more professionalism.
If he had been hosting the draw for the next round of the 'Tiddlywinks Grand Masters Pan European Champion Cup' and had William Burlington-Smythe in the studio to assist with the draw at the very least I would expect him (or the researchers) to:-
Research William Burlington-Smythe, how do you pronounce his name, what are his achievments in Tiddlywinks in general, the Grand Masters Pan European Champion Cup in particular.
How does the draw work, who picks the numbers, are team names read out after each number, each tie or at the end of the draw.
Scan through the names of the teams in the draw so that if there are any difficult names such as some little Welsh village, a Hamlet in the Channel Islands or Workington Town you can get the pronunciation correct.
Treat your guest, the sport and the fans of that sport who are listening in with respect.
I would hope that someone at the RFL has had, or will be having, discussions with the BBC about the way in which the draw was conducted to ensure that it doesn't happen again.

Mate, we get complaints on here about local radio productions, and commentary, being poor, or amateur, this was a mainstream professional radio broadcast, and it was done with less professionalism and organization than a villege fete tombola.
A proper shambles.

Agree. Not to mention the fact the BBC is a publicly funded service provider. Picking and choosing which sports to support or mock is not part of its constitution.

Agreed. This wasn't local or Hospital Radio, which is far more professional than what was on offer yesterday. This was supposed to be from a renowned national broadcaster.

| I knew the draw was taking place at 3.30 so I logged in here to see what it was. This thread came up without actually saying what the draw was so I went on the Virtual Terrace and it was posted on there. I then knew who was playing who in the next round of the Cup and was happy enough.
I can't for the life of me fathom why anyone would regard it as a bigger deal than that. It was a draw for the last 16 of a competition, not the live TV coverage of the final itself.

Really? You can fathom out there is link between how a sport is portrayed and treated by the national media and it's ability to attract sponsorship and the like?
I guess some people just struggle understanding how the real world works.

This morning you had a great feature on the Chris Evans show, bigging up the World Cup and semi finals in particular. That show has 9.5 million listeners. Straight away they had a load of texts coming in from people asking if tickets were really just £20 for adults. As a result of the feature people will check it out, and hopefully buy some tickets. If not they will have learnt a little more about rugby league.
The day before on 5Live you had a shambolic cup draw which sounded like something off a dodgy radio four comedy. 5Live has around 6 million listeners at times, having heard that people will see RL in the TV schedule and dismiss it as some Mickey Mouse trophy for Northerners. That is why it matters.

| Doesn't surprise me that the segment wasn't professionally done. Richard Bacon isn't exactly a professional employee, he was probably high at the time anyway, the dullard.
Boston should have done what Damon Albarn did all those years ago and chucked a beer at him.

Solidarity, as you may know i attend London games from time to time, even friends with a youth coach at the club. Big Gus thinks it's a great idea, the fans don't. I'm not offended that they're playing there just think it's wrong so i withhold my money, i didn't write a big long email. Plus would you like a 'home' game played in Leeds because that's the distance we're talking Stoop to Gillingham.
Is the club amateur, yes
Are they taking the pee out the fans, yes
Making a mockery of the sport, yes
All those points relevant to the thread topic.
The difference is i just don't go, i don't go on about it, just accept it and listen on the radio, i'm not a London fan just have a little empathy.
If you're trying to make a point i'd like to hear it, if you want to bring up a past post of me going off on one, do it, my views on life change with time.
As i get older, my tolerance decreases, more so a couple of months ago, i'm less inclined to give a crap about trivial issues and i'm fed up of whiny crap, and people writing complaints to the beeb over this (really)?
Was it unprofessional, probably but i listen to Bacon a lot, it's his style, people that listen to him do it because he has that style. People going on about 'but it's the bbc they should be professional blah blah' probably just bitter because of the 'bbc tax'.
I DON'T care, like i don't care about how good or bad Radio Merseyside/Manchester/Warrington/Wire/Humber/Leeds are.
I don't care how Williams is a lovely bloke and trains hard but is turd on the field and Walter has a go at me for it. I don't care if 15 people turn up or 15 thousand at the HJ to watch us. I don't care about all my posts that Builith wells (yeah spelt it wrong deal with it) always reports because of my phonetic swearing.
Im past caring, it's a forum and i'm past decorum and being polite and coming across as arrogant (i'm not but on here my tone comes across that way, so be it). I'm past saying 'oh good luck' to other teams. I'm turning into dropkick murphy but without the silly football fan worshipping and the IRA fan club badge. I'm past giving the faintest whiff of dog turd about what you think of me PY just because of your connections and superiority complex because you also attend the other age games. I'm not liked on here but i've never cared about that seeing as i know 10 people of the thousands that post, i get on well enough and they get me.
That answer your post, i'm sure you have a nice smart booty reply waiting for me as per.
People, worry that life is short, worry about the future of your children or family, worry about starving africans or banks robbing you dry, god even worry if we'll ever win a GF if you want.
Don't worry that someone doesn't know Billy f'kin Boston (some younger rl fans don't know him) and someone misread a poxy town in Cumbria.
It's hard looking in the mirror and thinking 'i'm the f'kin mad one in this world'.

| I saw Grix and Williams in the club shop last pre season picking up tickets for a pre-season game. Grix jibbed the queue, Williams didn't. I appreciated that. I also appreciated this Williams' nickname is "Dragon". You lot remember both of those facts when you're getting on his case.
As for the draw, I didn't hear it but it sounds pretty bad. I'm not going to go upset about it, I assume that the RFL will be having a chat with their "broadcast partner" in due course.
