I think we need to have somebody on loan to balance the cap with recent signings but Dean was needed more to cover halfback injuries. Maybe this loan was the only option on the table?

He surely has to play Dean this week the only halfback pairings that appear to have been alright this season have been the ones with Dean a part of them. Aside from maybe 1 game with Widdop and Williams in the early run. If Williams is fit and Williams is on the last tackle tactical kicking again I'm in the powell out camp, it doesn't work and any coach worth his salt would see that.

Nothing suprises me any more, and the half back shirts seem to be some sort of lucky dip at the moment, but I will be [iastonished[/i if Riley is in the 17.

You're more likely to see Powell himself come out of retirement or some sort of Barnstoneworth Utd reunion of Adam Doyle and Rocket Rodwell than Dean getting a chance.

Surely if balancing the Salary Cap was the issue, then both our currently underperforming 2nd rowers Currie and Holmes are on considerably higher salaries then Longstaff.

Well if a young player knocks on the door asking for game time, the coach should be encouraging their recent form in the reserves and helping them to fix up any areas for improvement, suggesting that if they can do that they can force out those in-front of them.

Just letting them go out and get romanced by a club when he may feel welcomed does nothing to help him find his way into the first team here.

Having watched several reserve team games, there does seem to be a huge gap between 1st and 2nds. So having a good game for the reserves doesn't show much. It would be good for Longstaff if he could get a 1st team game at Hull.

Spot on, as it's the best way to see at first hand whether Longstaff will cut the 'custard', it gives him a reward for his exploits in the reserves, encourages others that there's a pathway, and (quite rightly IMO) gives our current second rowers a well deserved kick up the proverbial and shows that the coach is trying to create a meritocracy.

Win win win win and given our current state makes sense
