| Quote FireWire="FireWire"I'm the opposite. Obviously tell people I'm from Warrington, but having travelled a lot if people from other countries they where abouts it is, then I would always say near Liverpool. I find that it always generates a more positive reaction as well.'"
"Manchester" generates far less disdain in this country. "Liverpool" generates far more warmth abroad. True story.
The disdain of course comes from Thatcherites, or simply people who have never been there, the warmth comes from people who have or who admire the city's history.
I live in Manchester and think it's a great city but if asked where Warrington is when I'm away from the area/country and tell someone where I'm from, "near Liverpool" is the answer.

| I never say `near` Liverpoo or Manchester, but I do say `in the middle of` or `between`
I don`t live `near` anywhere. I am fom Warrington.

I`m a Warrington Man and I don`t give a Damn,
Cos everyone knows I`m a Warrington man.
Now the girls of St. Helens, Wigan, Widnes and Leigh
all have confessed their affections for me.
So I tell each one that it`s her I adore
then give `em the d*** an they come back for more.
I`m a Warrington Man and I don`t give a Damn,
Cos everyone knows I`m a Warrington Man.
`I`m a Warrington man` by the Legend that is Longford Lover

| I say Warrington, Cheshire and then rely on their geographic knowledge. If I am overseas I say Manchester.

| I'd never say I was from Manchester even though I live here because the immediate follow up question from anyone in this country is "United or City?" and from anyone abroad is "Ahh you like Manchester United, yes?"
Swerve.

| Being at the centre of two big cities east and west, 'heartland' Lancashire to the north and 'posh' Cheshire to the south has produced a hybrid accent with elements of them all. Certain words ( like, in fact, [iLiverpool[/i) when pronounced by a Warringtonian, sound Scouse. Lots of Warringtonians pronounce '[ibook[/i' to rhyme with '[isouk[/i' which is pure Lancashire. I lived in London for 18 years and was often accused by southerners of being a Scouser. However, it is funny when Salford fans call us Scousers. To a Liverpudlian, Wires are, of course, [iWoollybacks[/i.

It makes me laugh too, and Hull fans do it as well, but it's no less accurate than our fans saying the same about Widnes and Saints who are of course as woolybacked as we are as far as real Scousers are concerned.
Warrington, Widnes, St. Helens (and for that matter the likes of Wigan, Leigh etc) have more in common with each other than with either Liverpool or Manchester. Of the two cities I would say the towns generally have more in common with Manchester but that's due to the unique identity that Liverpool has, for all sorts of reasons but mostly because it's a port city, whereas Manchester is more conventionally "northern".

Thats one of the biggest attractions of following the Wire just happens to be the finest team sport in the world as well.
Can't wait for Wembley following my team with fellow Warringtonians. Hope i don't start blubbering again when we lift the cup.

| A decade or so ago, I would have said that Warrington's accent is different from Manc. But I think that both have changed to become a generic "Northern accent", thanks to Liam and Noel, and Perry off Harry Enfield.
What really annoys me is the lack of the use of the letter "T". [iThese days, the le'or T is replaced by an F or a V, like in free bruvvers fort they would go to the feea'or to watch a show.[/i
One time it was only cockneys who did this but it seems to be spreading.
As for Warrington geography-there are two areas that appear on a map but I have never heard used to describe a location. One is Wilderspool. It is always followed by Causeway.
Another is Hulme at the top end of Poplars.
