| I have a Lenovo T400 (my work laptop) and also a Toshiba. Have been very pleased with both - although they are now (after a couple of years) slowing down. They take ages to boot up although the Lenovo works well once on. My older desktop is also now grindingly slow.
Why do computers do that? I've never been able to find a simple solution. None of them have masses of software on them, so why do they take so long to boot up and sometimes run slowly? Even when just browsing the internet or simply using a document?

Haha, it's not the spinny you have to worry about, but the data on the disks. Of course, put a nail through them (with enough impact) you'll up the magnetic field inside and would be akin to putting a magnet on it too.
Once you're done with that, burn it; literally.

This,
I managed to convert people who have been using PC for years to convert to a mac, and now their whole family, Both parents and both kids have a mac, as well as me converting my family too. There is no better, i've had mine for 3 years, download all sorts, run all programmes, and not once has it slowed down in three years, never had any problems whatsoever, it is quite literally an investment.

A variety of reasons SEB. Usually because of all the activity over the years, ie saving files, installing programmes, swtiching on and off, or the computer crashing etc., all this activity gets logged in the registry (everything), and this can easily become corrupt over time. As more and more of it gets corrupt, it takes the computer longer to access the data which is OK.
As much as it isnt something you ever want to hear because it's a ball ache, you really need a fresh format and re-install of the operating system after a while.
Another common reason is rather simple because technology advances, and programs advance too. As they advance they tend to get more resource heavy, and generally require a higher spec machine to cope. As things get more graphically user friendly, this will only become more apparant. Increasing the RAM (memory) can have such a devestatingly good effect and these days RAM is dirt cheap. It's the one thing that grates on me when I see new specced netbooks. They all come with 1gb and Windows 7. It really should be 2gb minimum these days. 4gb for anything other than surfing.
Finally, Viruses, spyware, malware and all the other goblins that exist without you knowing about them can slow you down no end. Again, fresh install of OS and start again.

Yet you offer no other product better?
Have you used both a laptop and mac? or are you just basing this on your dislike of mac/ apple products?
I have used both for a long enough time to give a good decision, and in my opinion, you can not top a mac with a laptop.

| If your laptop is overheating and switching itself off, simply hover the back of the computer. You'll be amazed. Try to do this regulary - every 2 weeks or so. This is caused by the CPU becoming hot and the fan on top of it gets filled with dust, thus meaning no clean air is going to the fan.
Agree with Geordie though, can't beat Toshiba laptops. My Dell one is knackered to and I need to upgrade.
The main requirements I'll be looking for are, around 4GB RAM, Solid State hard drive and quad core, though you can get six core now.

| The i7 ranges boasts 8 cores. It's AMD's that have 6.
Hoovering out the dust is not a bad idea for a laptop though especially if you use it on soft surfaces a lot.
Macs are terrible, yes I've used them. What's better? Any equivalent specced laptop that is also half the price and doesn't come with a ised OS.

In your opinion, however it is wrong, in mine. To say that they are terrible really is a joke. They may not be your kettle of fish, but they are a market leader for a reason.

I don't know why anyone would need 8 cores though. I don't like Macs either, just not my cup of tea.

I have been in the computer games industry as a professional artist since 1994, so I expect I have a bit more experience with every type of computer than your good self.
If you want something that looks nice on a coffee table go for the Apple.
If you want something that will blow your mind go Alienware.

By what measure do you make them the market leader?
It's not an opinion either, they are terrible (largely the OS I'm talking about here, as since then changed from PowerPC architecture to Intel the hardware is identical to that of a PC, they just charge you much, much more!).
Apple's marketing on the other hand is superb, the whole 'it just works' thing is genius and even better that they've got the gullible to believe it.

10 years ago you could have said the same about 2 cores. But right now I'd agree with you, I was just pointing it out as you mentioned 6 core CPUs.
The comment about Macs was in response to another poster, I probably should have made that clear

Man who works in the games industry and recommends gaming pc's shocker!
I'm a designer and use Macs all day. I love doing so. I can admit that Macs, whilst pretty, reliable and very good at what they do... are far too expensive compared to competitiors for your average consumer.

| There is a reason why the design, publishing and media industrys have chosen mac over PC so they must work.
I will hold my hands up and say that I have never used one but unless you are video editing, desigining or doing other design stuff I think a PC is more than adequate of 90% of users who browse the net and use office a little bit. No need to pay the inflated prices.
I would love to own a mac as I dabble with a bit of design and video editing but the cost is prohibitive.

And I had you down as a techie. There's no reason a mac is better for any of those things; certainly not now. The software required is cross platform and the hardware is identical (well the architecture is, so you can use equivalent hardware).
Of course those industries are all style over substance, which is exactly what as Mac is.

Exactly..designers use them because by there nature they are better 'designed' aesthetically, PC's tend to be more work-man-like in appearance as they are simply machines to perform the tasks given to them. There is SO much nonsense about Mac's and what they allegedly can do..Photoshop is Photoshop whether you use it with an expensive Mac bauble or a PC. I should know, I have been using the program since it's inception!
