| I don't see how people connect environmentalists trying to make us move to a more sustainable lifestyle with "people trying to make loads of money out of it".
Greenpeace hippies don't make money out of it, governments won't make money out of it....they will lose money, which is why they fudge things like Kyoto and Copenhagen, because no government is willing to go far enough.
The people who make money are energy companies, because if you control the supply of a scarce resource, you set the price, and you can make cash. Hence the oil industry being the most lucrative industry in the world. Can you imagine if the world became less dependent on oil, and there were alternative forms of energy, which were renewable and therefore not as easy to get a monopoly control of? All the oil billionaires would stand to lose everything.
There are too many people with too much money to lose, to allow policy to drift in the direction of alternative energy, so they have to make sure people carry on being enslaved to oil. Of course oil is going to run out, but probably not in the 1/2 decade working lifetimes of those who are at the top of the oil industry, and while it gets scarcer and scarcer they stand to make more and more money as they increase the price. So its in their interest that the environmental movement is rubbished.
The clever trick that the corporate interests have done, is create the idea in peoples minds that it is "governments" who have created the environmental agenda, because that will get people to be cynical, but its not governments at all, its people outside government, and outside corporate industry, who are lobbying government for change. Politicians might be talking about it with an election coming, because they want the votes of people who are concerned about the environment, but talk is cheap.
So all of you who have got your heads buried in the sand, its you who are the naive ones, because if you want to just carry on the way we are going, you are just going to become more and more in the pocket of the energy companies as the resources get scarcer, and you will just pay them more and more. Unlike the government, you can't vote them out, your choices are to pay the rate they charge, or sit in the dark and cold.

| Now here is a subject i feel strongly on.
First of all you need to know that there is no such thing as 'Global warming' this is actually a con by governments to increase taxes on Co2 emissions on things like cars, planes etc.
The world has been constantly changing in temperature over the past millions of years. Proof of this is in the last ige age that the world had, and we are still recovering from this. There are volcanoes on this earth that have been around for centuries that are heating the earth's crust and then cooling, This is ironically how life on earth started.
Countries that are classed as the tropics so countries containing the amazon, the rainforests of the earth. They are always warmer places due to the fact they are closer to the sun.
places that are cooler are obviously places that have ice caps (which are always melting and re-forming) because they are further away from the sun.
Unfortunately the worlds relliance on fossil fuels have virtually destroyed the o-zone layer. But does anyone here know how the o-zone layer works? if they do they will know why this is not a problem.
In-turn i challenge anyone to show me data proving that the temperature of the earth has violently increased over the last 100-1000 years.

| There is such a thing as global warming. It has happened before and it will happen again. That is not what is up for debate, whether or not the Carbon we are pumping into the air everyday is accelerating that process is.

| Global Warming is a misnomer, Climate change is a more accurate term and is not a myth it is a fact, we are currently in a cycle of quite noticeable change. The only thing that is mythical is that it is OUR fault, the government/media have spoon fed the masses more than likely for one of 2 reasons or possibly both.
1. To make more money out of us and limit development in the developing nations for numerous reasons.
2. We have a finite amount of resources and 'they' are trying to make us more conscientious albeit by force so that we don't deplete what we have at the rate we are doing.
To think that we have a say in how this planet lives and breathes and that by turning your TV off instead of leaving it on stand by will change anything is extremely arrogant on our part.
People are saying that the winters are getting colder yet i haven't seen any frozen rivers yet ?
In Victorian times people used to skate on the Thames ffs.
Climate changing - yes
Humans fault - get real we are not as powerful as we think we are

| That is ridiculous. You talk about skating on the Thames. That was during the mini ice age. As I said these warmings and coolings happen, they have always happened. However we are speeding the process up.

I don't have kids and me and the wife don't want them either. The shock and shear disbelief i get from people when i tell them is actually quite disturbing. Another reason i have aswell as not wanting to add to the ever growing population is to exterminate some faulty MS genes (not to be confused with M&S Jeans) prevalent in our family.
We are an extremely selfish species unlike crabs and lobsters who are just shellfish.

| Good Lord, what a profound thread.
I find it hard to believe that global warming is man made, as how important do you think we are on this vast planet? Only one third of the earth is land, and we don't occupy vast swathes of that.
Listening to the "man from the Met Office" yesterday morning explaining why they forecast a "mild winter" I was struck by his comment that seasonal forecasting is a very inexact science and in its early days. If they are having trouble forecasting seasons, how can we trust them to forecast 50 years hence? Is it any coincidence that the chairman of the Met Office is a former CEO of the World Wildlife Fund which is a major sponsor of the global warming theory?
I am not saying that the earth is not warming, as it has done over billions of years, along with global cooling, but I find it nigh impossible to believe that Man has such a high opinion of itself that it thinks (a) it is causing global warming and (b) it can do anything to affect it either way.
GB is on the same line of latitude as Canada and only enjoys mildish winters because of the Gulf Stream. If the Gulf Stream is disrupted for wahtever reason, we can expect more winters like this one.
Scientists have been proved wrong over the ages, and I suggest that, if you haven't done so already, read Bill Bryson's book " A short history of Nearly Everything".
See what you think then.

| Of course humans make a significant impact on the planet, for all those who say we are an insignificant force compared to nature, humans can destroy nature far quicker than it can repair itself. The rainforests are disappearing, thats not part of a natural cycle, its humans developing the technology to cut down trees, humans wanting to use the trees as a resource, and getting to work chopping them down.
The world has been around for billions of years, but nature had a delicate ecosystem where everything worked, and humans coming destroying things has major consequences for the world. We can quickly destroy the habitats of other species which is why many have become extinct, we are threatening others by either destroying their living environment or because we get so good at hunting them we can hunt them into extinction.
Humans cannot destroy the world, as in the earth's core, and there will always be bacteria and cockroaches etc, but we can definitely make the world a place which is impossible to live in for not only humans but most other species of animal and plant.
IMO there's a more immediate threat to the environment than CO2 emissions, which is the proliferation of nuclear weaponry. Now that the Cold War is over, a global superpower annihilation war is unlikely, but there are some volatile states with nuclear weapons now, and a regional war which includes nuclear exchange is quite likely. You only need to see a few nuclear weapons to be used in a regional war, to put a lot of dust and garbage into the atmosphere which would have very quick effects on the climate of the wider region (thats aside from radiation concerns) and ruin agriculture.
