According to the trial, the bloke who Cockayne was kicking had just knocked one of Cockayne's mates unconscious with a punch to the head, so it wasn't an unprovoked attack. Cockayne's mate was apparently brandishing his fists at this guy, so obviously there was something going on here, but it wasn't an unprovoked attack.

I thought that cockaynes friend hit the victim and he was out straight away which would of meant it was unprovoked and cowardly!

Read the reports on the trial, the reason Cockayne went psycho was because that bloke knocked his mate out.

Cockaynes spent some time inside as part of this anyway, and he's had the public humiliation of having his crime posted all over the internet so everyone can pass judgement on him. He's copped it rough and has had time to reflect on his mistakes....there's nothing to be gained by treating him like a leper now.

If Ben Cockayne had no value as a player, he would have already been sacked. Similarly, if Reardon and Pryce were stiffs in their respective reserve teams, they too may have already had their contract terminated. An admission of guilt for assault, when you are a professional rugby league player, is more than sufficient to justify dismissal and to terminate a contract.

However the reality is that all 3 players have talent, ability and value to their respective clubs. Accordingly, their clubs wait. I applaud Castleford for having the courage of their convinctions (pardon the pun) but I suspect that had the guilty party been one of their excellent young prospects, the results may well have been different. I'm not criticising them if that's true, just making the point.

Shocking attack but a lot of the ravings are from Hull FC fans. They have very selective memory loss. The attack by Raynor on a doorman and then trying to gouge the poor blokes eyes out. Should Raynor have been sacked. Should the RFL have banned him. Thuggery is not wanted in our sport but the punishments must be consistent. The courts are too lenient but how can the RFL now try and step in when in the past they have let shocking head high tackles go unpunished and still do.

Theres a big difference between a high shot in an R.L. match and some lunatic repeatedly kicking somebody in the head in the street..

Any head injury could lead to brain damage whether it be some lunatic kicking someones head or a blatant punch to the head.
