Realistically, there isn't a perfect candidate - We are playing in a second rate competition, so it's not like we can go and poach the best coach in the world. We are always going to end up with someone who you can find negatives about.
Holbrook was probably at the top end of the spectrum for what we could realistically attract, but, as we have found out, an assistant coach's job in the NRL is equally, if not more, attractive than a head coach's role in our comp.
Burgess would be a gamble, but I suspect anyone we can realistically attract is going to come with doubts about their suitability for the job.

Good ponts. I am just trying to work the criteria or rationale from the alleged candidate list.

| Fair points but there has to be an assistant (or upcoming coach) in the NRL who fancies two years of proving his credentials over here and thereby landing a better gig back in oz. I assume we’ve approached Hannay and Morris who would both be much better options than Burgess. Both long shots admittedly.

Burgess is an assistant at the Rabbitohs?

| The best we can hope for now is probably an assistant coach from the NRL who would relish the opportunity to prove his credentials for a top job back home… I know this failed last time.. but what other options do we have?
Whoever we appoint now, will know they weren’t first pick after the Holbrook farce… so it’s slightly tainted in that regard.
I would still be happy with a Briers or a Monaghan…. What I absolutely DONT want is us to take another SL coach, like Rowley… or an embarrassing attempt at throwing big money at someone and taking them away from the current club.

Well Morris was an 8/1 shot last time betting was up.

Morris wasn't on Sky's list of candidates for some reason.

| I can understand the reticence regarding Rowley but if the choice was Burgess or Rowley who would people prefer? Personally, basing it on very little, I can just see Burgess being an absolute disaster.

Out of those 2, Burgess for me. With a Noble/Kear type mentor figure.

To quote the Richard Pryor film I vote for none of the above.

| Burgess could go on to be one of the best rugby coaches in the world and that coumd start with us. Can't write him off before he has been given a chance, it depends on his ideas and how well he adapts to different personalities. I'd prefer someone who has been an assistant for longer though who is closer to being given his first head role.
Rowley is a solid no fom me, that said if he could bring Lafai with him it would make it easier to swallow.

| After watching the Catalans performance last night and watching them over the season when on sky, I’m hoping they go on to win the competition. Over the last 4 years, Steve Mcmanara has done a brilliant job, exactly what Warrington need. He’s won the cup for Catalans and I’m hoping with a Grand Final win he will see Catalans as a completed project and be up for a new challenge. Has it stands he would be my no1 choice at the moment. He recruits well and makes the right decisions who to let go.
The amount of good French players he’s brought through the system is also impressive.
Laughed at by many a few years back the ex England coach, Australian assistant coach and now head coach should in my opinion be the man Warrington board should be approaching for next season.

Unfortunately we would be the ones getting laughed at now if we tried to get McNamara.
What would our pitch to him be - "give up your lifestyle in the south of France with a quality team and come to live in Warrington to sort out the mess we've made ourselves".

Yes exactly that.
Do you fancy a new project?
I would personally offer him the same deal that they were willing to pay Justin Holbrook. Incentive based.
By the way if it ever stops raining, Lymm isn’t that bad a place to live.

| I think McNamara could do a decent job here, he’s built Catalan up from a basket case to fulfil their potential. No way on earth he’d leave now but then no way on earth I would have said McNamara would have been a good option when he went to France. So goes to show sometimes an unlikely candidate can do the job.
We need a similar transformation.
I think Chambers has a place in this, I wonder whether eventually he could grow in to a Director of Rugby role. I’d rather him than Kear or Noble tbh, those suggestions frighten the hell out of me!

Not necessarily, money talks. If we offer what we offered Holbrook (just shy of 900k) I’m sure, like most people, he’d find that very difficult to turn down whether he resided in the South of France or not.

Good post. At least Burgess would command some sort of respect from the players you’d like to think for what he’s achieved in the game - would Rowley?

There are some jobs where the phrase "I wouldn't do that if they paid me a million quid" come to mind, as we found out from Holbrook.
