| Quote ="Wolf Hall"Yes, Yesterday's man.
Warrington haven't had the same players for 7 years, there has been a churn of players coming in and out so stop implying it is. Powell has had the choice of who to sign and retain for over a year now including 2 he brought with him. He had a full close season with no international interference. So what has he done in that time? Just look at the league table, the performance, the lack of team spirit, his continual criticism of mainly younger players, his constant excuses. It is so depressing. He is supposedly a coach who brings out the best in players, turns them into gold. Well, this guy is a reverse Midas, what were good players are now poor.
Wait to see how we go next year? Well if we do it will be in front of an empty stadium, nobody wants to watch this unless it is those who enjoy watching a car crash.
Thanks Mr Powell, your tried your best, but it is not good enough for Warrington.'"
Ratch, Charnley, T King, Lineham, D Clark, J Clark, Cooper, Currie, Hughes are all supposed high profile players who've been around for the duration of Price's under achieving rein, some from earlier, and these players form the core of our squad (apart from the ones who have now left).
Are you seriously expecting us to to be performing well when many of those players who are still here have been told they need to improve, can't leave early and that they need to get out their comfort zone?
They're rebelling against the coach. Any coach brought in who's remit was to change the culture to a winning mentality would have faced the same problem imo to differing degrees. Powell, by the looks of it has gone in too harsh, but I'd rather that than get another yes man coach who's going to pander to the players.
Many of the great coaches at the greatest clubs in any sport are given time. It normally takes at least a season for new ideas to bed in - look at Watson at Huddersfield who were poor last season as an example.
People can say there are no shoots of recovery and I agree as I'm also disappointed and would have hoped for more, a lot more. But if we're going to change the culture medium to long term, it needs a root and branch clear out. Unfortunately Powell is stuck with these rebelling players for this season so we're going to have to ride it out.
Every single club he's managed, over 20 odd years, has improved and the players have improved also. There's no reason for this not to happen once he's rid the club of the players who don't give a monkeys. We'll have to wait til next season and judge him then.
I do agree though with a lot of things on here about the way he's gone about it, selection of young players and underperforming players for example.

| Quote ="Spanish Wire"I'm just not sure where this unwavering support for Powell comes from. I'm not saying the players are blameless, nor am I saying they're good enough, but facts are these players are better than what they've shown this season. As a team we look clueless. It is absolutely the coaches job to get the best out of the group he's got. I can't see a single department that's improved under Powell - can you? We're not fitter or stronger, we look less drilled, less disciplined, worse in attack and worse in defence. So what is it that makes you think he's the man to back and trust going forward? Genuine question not meaning to sound confrontational at all.
I hope I'm wrong and he is the right man, the saviour, the guy whose going to take us to a grand final win.....but so far there's absolutely zero to suggest he possibly might be.'"
The players are rebelling. They can't finish early and they've been told to improve and they don't like - it's player power. It's not that he can't coach and isn't a good coach; the players have apparently chosen not to take anything on board and are going through the motions.
We'll have to wait til next season to judge properly.
I'm not going to say too much more on this topic as I'm going round in circles saying similar things but on different threads.
I'll respectfully agree to disagree with anyone's who's disagreeing.
Fingers crossed for tomorrow.

I'm sorry but that's absolute nonsense and doesn't even make any sense.
Anyway I honestly hope this time next year you message me telling me I told you so. Fingers crossed

| The list of high profile players above that are dragging the team down because of Powell’s positive intervention…
Ratch (Powell gave a new contract), Charnley (Not played since April, not been at the club for weeks), T King (Powell gave a new contract), Lineham (plays for Wakefield), D Clark (not what he was, but still a high calibre player, selected without question week on week despite a young, keen understudy), J Clark (Powell gave a new contract) Cooper (Our best prop, starts every week. Nothing more to add), Currie (poor form, his understudy has been on the naughty step for missing a tackle in April, since loaned out), Hughes (re-appointed captain by Powell. Not played in months)
I’m sorry, but the excuses that are being peddled by a few on here are absolute tripe. IF, and it’s a big if, Powell has come in and shook the system and changed the pattern of normality. That would/should have been done in November and December. How, in all seriousness, could it take until the last week of June to work out that Toby King is a bad apple?
These players didn’t win anything, but we’re in the competition and got to the latter stages of competitions. If that is underachieving, then what we have now is completely unacceptable. So what’s changed, we can no longer defend, we can no longer complete sets, we fall away at the back end of games. They are facts, not opinion. So what has changed?
Unorganised, underprepared and unfit.
MUST win tomorrow. They’ve got no pack and little to play for. If we don’t, there should be no more time wasted.

Waiting for next season? We are 4 points off relegation and have not performed well in more than one game all season. Unless something changes quickly then we are going down and can forget about next season

| One last thing I forgot to mention and I'll shut up:
Did anyone see Lee Briers on the Sky Sports Superleague coverage a few weeks back and did anyone notice anything?
For the first time since he's been a coach at Warrington he didn't look like a tramp. I wonder if it had anything to do with his new position at Wigan. I wonder if Wigan would have employed him looking like he did for us as one of our senior coaches. It's a bit of a coincidence that now he's joined a more successful club, he's decided to project more of a professional demeanour.
At Warrington, he was a senior coach the players would have looked up to and someone who'd have been setting an example. If your senior coaches are turning up half washed, what does that say to the players. I reckon Powell saw this and its no coincidence that Briers left.
From top to bottom it's not been right for years. That's why we have no GF wins and that's why we need someone with the guts and track record of creating the right culture in Daryl Powell.
Before anyone says he didn't win a GF. Klopp or Fergie didn't win the Champions league before they had success at t heir respective clubs.
I'll shut up now.

On what grounds is Powell this “good coach”? The team he left and stripped of his mates are on course to finish in their highest position since 2018. That would say that Lee Radford is doing a better job than Powell has done in 4 years. I think they’ve only been 4th or better 4 times in 10 years, and picked up a grand total of one league leaders shield.
Price had more success. Radford, more. Agar, more. Anderson, equal. How is he a better coach than Agar? How is he better than Radford?

None of those coaches you mentioned took a relegation threatened side/side consistently in the bottom half of the table to a League Leaders shield and GF. Let alone on the budget Powell had.

| From Wiki. I've copied the info from just before DP was appointed as Castlford coach to the end of tenure:
Terry Matterson stepped down at the end of the 2010/11 season to take up a coaching role in Australia and was replaced by former St. Helens coach Ian Millward. Millward released by mutual consent on 9 April 2013 after a poor run of results with 1 win in 18 games and with the team at the bottom of the Super League table. Daryl Powell was appointed coach in May 2013 taking over from assistant coach Danny Orr, who had been in temporary charge of the club.
2013–present Castleford finished the 2021 Super League season in 7th place and missed out on the playoffs.

Credit where it is due, he got a team to the top of the league 5 years ago. He did really well. But then he took them backwards. They were only marginally better off when he left than when he arrived. It’s not as if he’s built a dynasty.
Maybe he’s a great wheeler dealer, plucky underdog. But it is apparent that he can’t handle a squad with expectation. Ambition is great, expectation is different.

| From 1 in 18 games won the season before he arrived to top 5 placings in the next 5 seasons: 4th, culminating in the League Leaders Sheild playing attractive rugby - hence classy Cas.
In the last two seasons they lost some players and suffered a number of key injuries but most good coaches will have a similar success trajectory unless they quit at the top. Name me a succesful long term coach in any sport who's success trajectory keeps rising to the top and stays there until they leave? - doesn't happen or else successful coaches would be there for years and years. They leave when things are getting stale on that downward trajectory.
Despite the last two years, the club were left in a much better position than when he took over.

| Maybe we can thank Mr Powell when he wins us the championship next season, playing in front of 3500 fans with most of the ground cordoned off so the kisscam can actually find people stood close enough to each other.....won't that be a rare treat? #emporersnewclothes

| Why this coach though? What credentials does he have to turn nearly men into champions?
He took a bad club, and made them decent, with a flash of success. There was no consistency, no heroic big game CV, just a bright start at Leeds, 19 years ago, a decent fist of the championship and an up and down spell, which has been in decline since 2017, at Cas. Now he’s at a club that was there or there abouts, only needed someone to put some flair in and keep the defence sound, and he’s made them bad.
P.S. don’t start on budget/player power etc… if he gets the credit for making players play well, he gets the flack for making them play poorly.

Well as of right now the brief is the same as it was in Castleford 2013 - we need a coach who can take a relegation standard team to the other end of the table. Powell is actually even more right for the role now than he was when he took over.

Right now, anyone. Reading Toby King’s account in the paper from how that had been managed has only soured my opinion further.
But I’ve been through what I would want from the club elsewhere, no need to repeat.
We need to snap this toxic cycle and stay up. It’s that serious.

Check the Huddersfield Examiner. He found out about the move from Ian Watson while driving to Warrington’s training ground. Had to collect his boots the next day when he bumped into Powell who only offered a “vague” response for moving him on. If true, and it’s a big if as we haven’t heard the other side, that is poor management.

| In almost every interview since he arrived Powell has mentioned pressure having a negative impact on the team.
The players not dealing with pressure situations very well. Him wanting to take the pressure off the players etc etc.
I suspect that this was all aimed at big games like Challenge cup, play off games or finals and not the situation we find ourselves in.
If the worst case did happen the players super league contracts become void and they are effectively free agents. I am sure most would be picked up by other super league clubs but those clubs would know that the players options are limited and the upper hand in negotiating contracts would be with the club and not the player. So their opportunity to earn would be impacted. They couldn't just knock on another clubs door and get the same money.
Cooper, Widdop, William's, Clark, Ratchford, Currie, Wardle are all recent international standard players so we have ability to get ourselves out of this hole but do we have the application?
I thought from day 1 the constant reference to pressure was actually adding more pressure. It's like when we take a beating my missus says dont be grumpy about it. Well sister, i am gonna tell you that saying that just makes me even more grumpy.
It's time for everybody involved to put their big boy pants on and start dealing with the pressure because there is a whole load more of it right now.

Did toby offer any information on his poor response to forgetting his passport the other week, or his equally poor response to getting dropped and play in the reserves recently? I think those things may be a big clue why he was moved on

Maybe it's club policy for assistant coaches at wire. I saw Ryan Sheridan shopping in asda and if he'd have been sat outside I'd have probably thrown some change at him.

No argument on his poor form, hence why I complained months ago about Wrench not being trusted in the centres for a prolonged period.
But. To receive a call from a coach of another club to inform you that your club of 6/7years has let you go, with immediate effect, is pathetic. I would have expected Powell to be a man, sit him down and explain to him what was happening and why.
If this is true, Powell is a coward. In my opinion.
