| My thoughts.
1. Bring back or allow a bit more biff, the game is very flat without it.
2. The game needs to be promoted to a wider audience. Being from the south I have never played the sport. As a kid it was always football at school and a bit of rugby union. Which I detest. But I have grown to love the sport over the last ten years, and got a season ticket a couple of years ago, although I can only go to a quarter of the games. I think if it was promoted to people down south, I know they have London broncos etc but if there was a cheap coach going from London or people who are interested in union/stag do as a alternative to horse racing, the sport is exciting especially if someone who has not be bought up with it as a child. The grounds could attract more fans to all teams.
3. Get rid of Thursday night games

It was part and parcel of the entertainment, but I can't ever see it returning. We live in a changed world, and parents won't want their kids to have to go through such stuff. Which is fair enough, I can't offer an argument to that despite the fact I loved a good hit and a watching a match boil over into a scrap.
I think our best chance is champagne-stuff attacking rugby. People used to watch RL because it was the open code with lots of scoring. I'm not sure why we changed that.

| A 10 team league would be a disaster., and should be avoided.

| Quote ="Douglas Black"The game (outside the NRL) is on its booty. Agreed.
The rest is pie in the sky (pun intended). There is no money in the sport cos it has very limited appeal. Big numbers of clubs being promoted and relegated every year would see massive numbers of clubs going bust.
Do I have any better ideas? No. We are going to remain very much a minority sport in England. It ain't gonna change whatever fiddling we do with structures. The current product at Super League level is pretty poor too. The niggly play the balls and trying to cheat penalties put us a million miles behind the NRL, never mind the quality of the players. If I wasnt emotionally invested in it, would I start watching? I doubt it.'"
This is pretty much spot on

If you think our game has gone soft you ought to have a look at Rugby Union as it is being played now.
Due to fear of litigation and damage to the brain it is a shadow of its former self. At top level the game is interrupted as the video ref. assesses if there has been a high tackle or any relatively minor contact with the head. It's changed so much in a short time. Rugby is not as we know it.
Rugby League looks barbaric in comparison but it is sure to follow in that direction in time.
The future is not great for those who love the biff. I shudder to think how rugby will develop.

| I'll always take a game of skill over a game of thuggery - if you want "biff" you have to accept the likelihood of losing players through cowardly assaults or predetermined acts of aggression (crusher tackles, focus on joints etc). Losing a key player for months on end as a result of such an act isn't entertainment, or acceptable in the name of professional sport.

| The game is tough enough now as it is, general hit ups and tackling are ridiculous (across the board) head knocks are occurring al the time now and injuries are left right and centre.
And yet, they keep changing the rules to make it faster, arguably a bit more reckless.
For those that used to watch before the 10 metre rule came in, how do you think going back to 5 metres would affect defensive lines and big hits and stuff like that ?

I only started watching in the early nineties but I think a 5 metre retreat would need half-backs with more skills than we see now to unpick defences.
I agree with you on the hit ups and stuff. I think to really grow the game it's got to be attractive to parents who will only feel safe if we clamp down on the dangerous stuff. I'm pretty sure there are ways we can incentivise attacking rugby, maybe by offering bonus points for teams that can score more than a certain number of points. Or maybe change penalty goals to single points to discourage slog-fests. To be honest I was against that in the past as I wanted to complete with the Aussies defence-wise, but seeing how the game is dying a slow death over here I want it to be as attractive as possible. More flair please.

| More teams, more trophies to win, and close, tense games* above flowing rugby and aggro on the pitch. No-one likes seeing games that are finished by half-time because it's already 24-0.
*I know more teams might not be totally compatible with close games, but over time it would if the salary cap was designed in a way to encourage a level playing field.
Any proposals that can achieve those things have my support.

| The product is absolutely dire, I can't argue with that. We continue with it because we are emotionally invested, but we need to forget any new fans and expansion for a while.
How do we improve the spectacle? For me we need to stop over reffing it, ans get rid of video ref too.
We also need to go easier on players, sop banning our best players for slightly mistimed tackles (tetevano). Stop aiming for perfection and accept that when blokes get tied and in heat if battle things happen!
By all means strike down on malicious intent, (gouging, testicle grabbing, chicken wings, racism) but generally give the players bit more leeway.
And dare I say it..... BRING BACK THE SHOULDER CHARGE!!!!
