Fair enough - on the plus side I'm not sure how much of the game you saw over in that corner (is sitting by the corner flag the best place to watch rugby?) with all your singing and jumping up and down but Wire played well. I thought, whilst he isn't your long term answer, that Bridge looked good.

Bridge has had a good few games this season after having a terrible few years with injury problems and lack of form. I think he's thriving on the extra responsibility at HB and given a good stint there i think he could become a decent HB.

Thanks for clearing that up.
I'm sure that's purely down to my complete lack of a sense of humour rather than the complete absence of any comedic value whatsoever in your quote.

That French chant just came across as a drone. Something slightly annoying. Of course if you were having a good time then good for you. But chanting the same thing monotonously/endlessly and thinking that creates a 'tremendous' atmosphere and has any effect whatsoever on the performance of your team makes you seriously deluded.

| It's true. Our home support is dire. We've just shown how we can support a team yet next home game it'll back to normal. Why is that? Do people only join in because it's a day out? Is it the weather? Is it because everyone has spent the day getting tanked up?

| Do great fans create wins?
Good idea for a thesis.
We always hear how England football/cricket fans outsing the opposition especially away, is this reflected in England's results?
Is the reason Wigan have been better than Warrington for so long because they have more fans than us and their fans are more able to inspire their team than ours?
How have Man City suddenly been able to generate fans that can win them titles where for years they were mired in mediocrity?

| SC I know that you don't for one minute believe that.
I only hope it's a ploy to create debate.
The 18th Man, if it does give an intensity boost, is marginal.
But within this margin, there could be enough to lift one of the teams when both generally are ability matched.

All of the above really, helped along by people being on the pop. All part of the event over the weekend, I've no voice today but come Sunday I will probably just want to stand and enjoy the game at Belle Vue quietly.

| In the previous match there wasn't enough numbers there to be heard over the drum from where I was sat, it took till all your fans were there to actually be heard. Then apart from annoying Monaghan song you sang your hearts out throughout.

| I saw a few opposition fans (*cough* Wigan *cough*) moaning about the singing on Twitter. One even melodramatically claimed we were ruining her Magic Weekend
What they're really thinking is "I wish our fans were that awesome"
I took a couple of videos of the post-match craziness if you didn't get enough yesterday.....

I'm not sure I'd be crazy enough to let a bunch of *very* drunk Wire and Catalan fans do this to me, especially over concrete, but hey-ho. Just glad there wasn't any cracked skulls!

I like your thinking. I would think that in the case of LFC for example the crowd may well inspire the team. By the way many City fans will tell you that when they were in the old 3rd Division they still got crowds of 30,000.
But I think it happens less in rugby league. I certainly wouldn't claim Wigan's fans to be anything special in this regard. My original post was only trying to puncture the view that the Wire 'singing' had anything to do with your win over Saints. I'm sure the players will even say that the fans contributed to it if you asked them But then, they would wouldn't they?
Everyone says what great fans they have and with today's society all needing to be involved 'to be part of the story' it feeds the illusion that we are part of our team's success - when in truth we really aren't. Wire beat Saints because Saints didn't compete with your pack in which Hill was outstanding. That's it really.

I, for one, hope some Wigan fans' weekends were ruined by Warrington fans singing. I doubt it though.

You've mixed two factors here, great fans and more fans.
I think a great atmosphere can inspire z team occasionally but it as to be something really special; probably a better atmosphere than any Rugby match can generate. Also, a great atmosphere doesn't have to involve much singing.
For the more fans argument, the best teams have the best players. So the teams with the most money generally get the best players in. Traditionally the money was brought through the turnstiles but TV deals and sugardaddy owners mean gate money isn't as important as it once was. So more fans, more success.
City have always had a fairly decent crowd, even before they won the lottery. Their problem is that it's not growing at a rate they would want and when you get midweek games or unglamorous cup ties, theres not the volume of fans waiting for tickets, so you start to get gaps in the seats. Away games are the same for them.

So you saw them get 30,000 for some games in the old 3rd division, but in the same season they got a crowds of 19,000, 11,000 and then 3007 against Mansfield, all in cup games. Some of the away crowds were very poor as well.
I don't know how the Liverpool crowd can inspire the team, once you get past the stage managed YNWA at the beginning, you can hear a pin drop for most of the games.
So in conclusion, More fans = more possibilities of winning trophies, Great atmosphere = can occasionally generate a better performance (or periods of play) on the pitch.

Fair points. I'm inclined to agree. (Though 19,00 for a third division game is pretty good)
I personally find the YNWA nonsense rather nauseating. I suppose I was thinking of the time when LFC beat St Etienne (1977 I think - the same year you scored thirty league goals and won ten grand from the Daily Express!!!).

That has more to do with the position of you and the direction of acoustics rather than loudness of voice.

Would anyone care to explain to me why you were singing that anyway. Do you have French players that I don't know about? Is Warrington twinned with Toulouse? Do any of you even know what it means?
