| I still think its a shame about Penny. The way he burst on to the scene, the tries, the hype, the dream team, the England train-on squad did him no favours at all.
Had he made less of an impact the expectations would have been lower.

| Such an exciting player to watch, some memorable tries and i'm sure he will score plenty more but the rest of his game is not good enough. Shame.

His 2nd try wasn't bad either.'"
That is a great try to be fair, but Penny's against us was better because of the slick offload by (was it Grose?) to get the ball to Penny, then no one got anywhere near him!

| So where do we think it all went wrong for Penny?
he burst onto the scene as a fantastic raw talent with lots of pace... But for whatever reason his game never kicked on.
Did he rest on his laurels and his new big contract? Or was it simply a case of him not being as good as originally thought?

| Quote ="the flying biscuit"They should show the Wires Wigan game from a few years ago where Penny made Chris Ashton look like an absolute Carthorse.
Now that’s a better comparison. Ashton got dogs abuse from the pie fans that day while Penny was flavour of the season.
As reported on the superleague web site match report:
[urlhttp://superleague.co.uk/report.php?id=1251[/url
Then wing sensation Kevin Penny lit up the stadium taking Jon Clarke's pass to race 40 yards and round Ashton with little room to manoeuvre and bag his 10th try in only eight starts.
you wouldnt have thought back then that Donkey Ashton would go on to be Englands most talked about Rugby player while Kevin Penny's league career would be on its ar$e at a Wakefield side in serious trouble on and off the field.'"
Do you know of any video of this online? Superleague.co.uk doesnt go back that far for match highlights it appears.

| KP certainly didn't lack the desire to do well in the game. He tried too hard imo, lost concentration at key times and the resulting gaffs made everyone lose confidence in him. I hope he does score for Wakey on Friday, just not too often. I would love to see him bounce back and have a long and successful career in the game.

| If Cullen still has ties witht he club at that point I can see a couple of ex and current Wire's going. Wouldn't be overly shocked if Clarke ended up there.
Also can someopne confirm this point from Wiki on Jon "Recently the Wire fans voted him 'Greatest Hooker' in Wire's history, beating John Thursfield and Mark Roskell into 2nd and 3rd place."

I always think its best to compare him with someone like Peter Fox to try and Work out why it went wrong.
Both not the tallest of Wingers both not Muscle men, both got Great pace, both been highlighted as being suspect under a high ball and exposed a times in Defence.
Why is Fox in the England Set up and Penny no where near it? His defence is not any better than Penny’s and under the high Ball I would say he’s worse, Yet Penny for me is far better in attack. (awaits a Hull kr fan to describe Fox as the closest thing to Eric Groathe snr)
So not a great deal between them other than Penny was probably being paid more than Tony Smith thought he should have been.
So I could sort of understand Smith saving money and bringing in Rhys Williams for half the price (guessing), but then he’s out on loan (and apparently being criticised for mistakes by Crusaders fans) so why he didn’t persevere with him I’ll never know.
The fact is we’ve done well with him out of the team, but I would still prefer he was a Wire player than a Wakefield one.
Making opposition players look second rate and getting under the skin of saints fans was a great thing to watch.

| Richie Mathers had his good points too but was moved on after being too error prone. Richie Myler was left out of Wembley because of a few questions over his defence in the weeks before.
I reckon Smith wants the complete package he doesn't want players who could be targeted.
I also think its better for Penny that he is moved on because he can at least get more of a chance to show whether he has tightened up his game. Here he wouldn't have been a first choice winger, he would have been a squad player who played about 6-8 games a season.

| I sincerely hope Kevin had kicked on since he played for us. I've not seen him play since Edinborough last year and he could still do a job. (Tell a lie last time I saw him was on the way down to Cardiff, but one of us was ed & kept referring to John Kear as "Stevo" - I think it was Kevin, not me)
Yes he has blinding speed and can fly along the touchline, but those talents alone are the ones needed to advance your rugby career with a yellow flag in your hand. These days you need to develop into more than that & I hope he has.

I wasn't aware of him getting under our skins.. We all used to sing 'There's only one Kevin Penny' in reference to my earlier mentioned 'assist' in a Gidley try, one that helped us knock you out of the cup!

| Kevin Penny reminds me a lot of Richie Barnett Jr and Paul White, all 3 have pace to burn but they struggled with a lot of the basics.
I can see a similar pattern developing with Kevin Penny where he could become a bit of a journeyman before ending his days at a lower level. A great kid with plenty of pace and enthusiasm but thats not really enough these days at the top level.

| Penny so far this season has been better in the tackle than i expected but he looks dodgy under the high ball and has a tendency to drop the ball but when he gets the ball in hand he is one of the most exciting player in super league and his try against Catalans shows he can make something out of nothing.
I have the feeling that you lot will bombard him with kicks on Friday which could end in either of 2 ways. 1 he will struggle and you will score a few trys on hi wing or 2 he will cope ok catch a couple of these bombs and then go the length of the field and score.

| Apparently Penny was done for pace by one of our youngsters on the wing according to a Wakey fan, also he didn`t have a good game according to that Wakey fan.
