I e mailed stuart Cummings yesterday re this incident. my question being that i felt it should have been an 8 point try.
TBF stuart replied very quickly and pointed out that once the ball is grounded then play is 'dead' and a penalty can't be given, the 8 pointer comes in if a man is fouled in the act of scoring.
That poses the question that if say, i kick the ball in touch and play is 'dead' does that mean i can banjo someone without fear of conceeding a penalty?
I doubt it!

Anyway going back to a serious point, when I first saw that, I shouted myself that it should have been an 8 point try but if he's explained why not then fair enough. It's just a bit odd though that if it happened before he put the ball down, it could be a penalty, but if it happened a fraction beforehand, it's not. Either way, foul play happened so it should be punishable by a penalty, whether the ball was grounded or not.
As for banjoing someone off the ball, I'm assuming that if there is no act of attempting to score and the play goes dead, then you batter someone, I guess that will be construed as unsportsman like conduct, so you probably would end up conceding a penalty. |

Joel Tomkins report is a load of rubbish. He says that "he tried to pull out of the tackle but feels he was already committed". i don't see how this could be true as it happened 2/3 seconds after the grounding. Then when he states "He was attempting to stop his opponent getting the ball down and is seen to accelerate when he realises his opponent doesn't ground the ball immediately" it makes me wonder how he expected to deny Myler from scoring by dropping down with the forearm on his face. Finally the "He doesn't feel contact was made with the head/neck of his opponent and attempted to bring his forearm down away to avoid this" makes me wonder if he has seen it again when he clearly makes contact with the head on Myler.
Terrible decision from the RFL IMO, but there isn't much we can do to change it...
