| After watching 2 games yesterday I've come to the conclusion that they already do that, but without the game of Rugby at the end.

| With all this debate about tries and drop goals, and which is the most skilful to master, and the most exciting to watch as a spectator, its interesting to note that probably the most exciting single moment of Wire's season in 2009, was a Lee Briers' drop goal in a Cup tie at Hull KR??...

As you correctly pointed out in your original post, 85,000 people are happy enough to regularly watch this sport, so it must have some appeal???'"
This genuinely bewilders me. I know there are a high percentage of the crowd that are there mainly for the social occasion, but even so.
To be honest I dislike everything England RU stand for, well in the All Blacks for yesterdays victory.

| In mainsteam sporting terms, there's nothing more "establishment" than the England rugby union team. I was made up when they lost the last World Cup Final.

| Quote ="Richeastender"I quite enjoy watching RU International matches, and agree with a previous poster about the thrill of Wilkinson's drop goal in the World Cup final.'"
If that gives you a thrill, then you must be easily pleased.
I remember the 2003 World Cup Final very well. I was in work doing overtime. Across the way, there was about 6-7 people listening to the final on radio, for some reason enthralled by it. One of them came over and asked me if I wanted to listen; I told him I'm quite happy listening to the 80s weekend on Century FM.
A little while later, I heard all these huge cheers and someone ran over to me saying "Guess what? Guess what?". I replied by saying "someone finally score a try?" and they said no, England have won the World Cup. I just shrugged my shoulders and said "I don't personally care, the only Rugby game i'm bothered about is the 3rd Ashes test between GB and the Kangaroos" (on the same evening). I then got back to my work and the 80s weekend, and the others got bollocked for not doing anything for the last 2 hours!
Quite bizarre how getting into RL makes you change your perception of RL. Back in 1995, I watched every single match of the RU World Cup, and always wanted to be like Joel Stransky. Now, I can't stand the sport.
Quote ="Richeastender"But I was watching Scotland and whoever yesterday, and was disappointed by Scotland's only tactic which appeared to be get in the other half and win a penalty.'"
But yet Scotland, coached by a former England coach, got a result against the Wallabies. England didn't.

Quite obviously by the attendance figures, the majority of people who like 'rugby'.
Look, I've said before and I'll say it again...Comparing the two codes is pointless....Its like comparing Test Cricket & 20/20 Cricket....Both have a bat and ball, but are, for the most part, alien to one another.....So it goes for Union & League.

But you are comparing international matches only. Club games are a whole different proposition.

| I must say I've never met a rugby union fan (ie someone who regularly plays the game and/or attends matches, not just someone who takes a passing interest in internationals) who goes on and on about rugby league in the same way [isome[/i league fans harp on about union.
What are some of you trying to prove? It's a different game and largely irrelevant to Warrington RLFC. If you like it sound, enjoy, if you don't (and I don't personally) then why go on about it?

In fact what will Lee Briers most be remembered for
'that drop goal' against Australia in the World Cup 2000
'that drop goal' at Leeds in the relegation battle 2002
'that drop goal' at Leeds in the playoffs 2006
'that drop goal' at Hull KR in the Challenge Cup quarter last year
and people call Wilkinson 'drop goal Jonny!'
mind you even Jonny has never bored his fans enough to kick five drop goals in one game....

| Has Wilkinson ever booted one purely for the sake of getting his name on the scoresheet as "Drop Goal Lee" did in quite a high profile game?

| I enjoy watching RU - though it`s restricted to England and Sale Sharks -why do RL fans feel the need to slag it off all the time it`s never done us any harm and provided us with great players like John Bevan and Jonathan Davies -why don`t we just grow up and research why RU games get more support and media coverage ...

| The occasional RU game can be very exciting and sometimes its worth waiting for but overall its just a boring sport, who wants to go and watch 80 mins of kicking over the sticks seriously? Because thats all that happens at some games.
The quality at club level is shocking! When it gets to international level it gets better but its still poor unless your watching some of the best teams playing well. One of the England players couldn't even catch a ball all game last week.

| Union is a more patient game, league is faster and more entertaining.
Me personally cant see the appeal in union, its boring
All they do is kick and chase
But thats just my opinion, im not biased or anything

that has to be the most mis-informed statement I have ever read on this message-board of mis-informed statements.
I suggest you might take the time to read David Hinchcliffe's wonderful book Rugby's Class War and re-consider your view. It will also assist in understanding why rugby union receives much more media coverage.

Whats the answer?
This is one of the main problems as it links to crowds and sponsors!

I read the post from Quadrivium and wondered how long it would take PY to respond.
Quad...you are living with blinkers on! It was'nt that along ago that Jonathan Davies was not allowed into a RU ground to commentate because he dared to play for the poorer code!
