| Top four in the league would be a good place to target, but the real improvement we need is to be able to take on sides like Leeds and Saints and beat them.
Getting close and losing every time isn't really getting close, if there's a pattern of defeats.
We won the Challenge Cup this year courtesy of a kind draw, which isn't to say beating Hull KR, Wigan or Hudds was easy, all three of those sides finished above us and none of those games were at the HJ. However if we are to retain the Cup, which is our best chance of winning a trophy again in the near future, we will need to be ready to beat at least one of Leeds or Saints when it counts.
Ironically whilst everybody talks about consistency being our biggest problem over the past few years, what will make a big impact for us is being able to beat top sides when it counts, we beat good sides when it counts this year in the Challenge Cup and it got us a trophy - being able to beat a top team on a one off when it counts either in the CC or the playoffs is what will see us make headway towards the playoffs.
Under coaches like Van de Velde and Cullen, we used to regularly beat top teams (apart from Saints) but it was never in a big pressure cooker game when it counted, apart from when we won at Headingley in 2006.
My biggest hope for us next season is for us to beat a top team in the Challenge Cup. If we put out Leeds or Saints in one of the rounds en route to the final, it will open up the draw and put us in a good position to defend it. If we defended the Challenge Cup it would be a legendary achievement.

If honours and success aren't important to you then that's totally your own prerogative, of course. If someone else wants Wire to win things that doesn't mean they are infected with "cockitis" nor does it mean they are akin to Wigan or Saints fans. It's the standard mindset of every supporter of every team in every sport.
I note from your avatar that you choose an image of Mr Morley with Warrington's latest success. Are you sure you're not bothered about success or deluded in any way?

flying biscuit you're getting carried away, I could understand if we were the great entertainers of rugby league who played with style and lost a la Kevin Keegans Newcastle but over the years we have been error prone and frustrating to watch with the odd bit of flair to keep us going. I'd have taken Tommy Martyn at Wire any day of the week and I'd also have far rather had a backline with guys like Lyon, Gidley, Sullivan and Albert in it.
Id have traded any of them or any of the players we've ever had for the chance to have Hanley, Bell, Edwards and Offiah in primrose and blue.

In the past three seasons we've played Leeds six times, they've won five we've won one when they had a lot of youth teamers out, we had a more even record against them in the years before that but the past three seasons Leeds have accelerated away from us. In that time they've won two Super Leagues and are already minor premiers this year (although no Challenge Cup ). Tony Smith was the man who turned Leeds from the nearly-men to the really-men, so I'm hoping that we can start closing that gap.

I just dont have "expectations" for next year.
I'd love us to win stuff ....expecting it though? no not at all....

Are you really? I'm quite suprised by that (if true) considering you like to put the beat down on us at every available opportunity.
But, since you put it nicely, I'll give you my answer.
I don't think we will repeat our Challenge Cup success, however if we don't, I don't mind at all. I want a good league run. I want us to start being consistent and being up there, challenging. I want to finish as high as we can before the playoffs. I also want us to start taking points from the "Big 2" and hope to see our first SL win at Knowsley Road.
A lot to ask, but with Smith having the off season, then pre-season and then having his first full season in charge, I think it's possible that some, if not all these things could happen.

| if we do what huddersfield have done this season, i'd be happy with that. i'd like us to play with a bit more style than they have, but you can't argue with their results. if anyone had said that they would have been 3rd in super league and challenge cup finalists at the start of the season, you'd have been carted off. if they can improve like that though, i hope that we can too.
also, super league is going to be more competetive again next year. im sure celtic will get more points than they did this year, and every side from salford up will expect to be in the eight. bradford and hull can't be as bad next year. huddersfield and hkr will need to have as big a season as they have had this year to maintain what they have achieved and wigan, well anything could happen with them, depending on whom they get in to replace noble. and wakey and cas will be looking for the same again, and i think cas could be next years dark horses. interesting and exciting times, and i hope the crowds come out to watch it all.

I want us to batter Saints off the park, but I'll be happy with a couple of last minute drop goal victories!
I want the team to be consistent, fear no-one, and never have the kind of 'off days' that we've grown so used to.

| Could you contradict yourself any more in one thread!?
You answer the OP by stating:
Quote ="the flying biscuit"not bothered never have been ...........I'll Just be happy being a Wires fan and a fan of Rugby League.'"
Now:
Quote ="the flying biscuit"I want Wire to win things what a foolish thing to try and imply otherwise....
I just dont have "expectations" for next year.'"
Yet previously:
Quote ="the flying biscuit"if we make the top 8 great, if we dont i'll be dissapointed'"
You have expectations of the top 8 otherwise you wouldn't feel the need to be disappointed and clearly by being disappointed you would be bothered!
Quote ="the flying biscuit"and when people Are expecting us to finish top when there is nothing to suggest we can do this, it is going to land us in the realms of where saints fans are at now.... wanting the Coach out because they didnt finish top, they only finished 2nd, come on its a joke .... '"
You are comparing Warrington fans, starved of league success, to Saints fans who have had plenty of it since Superleague began. Now that's a joke! You seem hugely paranoid that you might be compared to a Saints or Wigan fan if Warrington won things on a regular basis.
Quote ="the flying biscuit"I'm sat here quite happy that we have won a trophy and not at all bothered about not featuring in the playoffs...i'm looking forward to the four nations and cant wait for next season but im certainly not going to stew in my own juices for the next 12 months because we dont finish Where I want us to....'"
I'm bothered because I'm disappointed in our league form yet I'm delighted that we have won the cup.
Quote ="the flying biscuit"oh and the Morley Avatar ...he's not a bad player is he ?

He is a cracking player and I'm sure there are many images of him without the Challenge Cup. You might find a few of Dessie, trophy-less, too.
Supporters always expect the absolute most from their team. It's natural to expect your sports team to win and following a victory in the CC you'll have to accept a lot of fans with high expectations for the league next season. Bookmakers will have Warrington in the top 6 in the betting to win the league, maybe higher, so it isn't beyond the realms of possibility that we will win the league and GF. So why not expect improvements of the highest order? Even if it's a dream at this stage it certainly doesn't make those supporters akin to Saints or Wigan fans and absolutely doesn't mean they have "cockitis"

I'd actually be happy with doing what we've done this season again next year, even if it did mean coming 10th in the league. I'd certainly rather win the Challenge Cup than do what Huddersfield have done.
In years to come if people ask what happened in the 2009 season I wonder what people will remember, who came 3rd, or who won the Challenge Cup?
Who won the Challenge Cup in 1998? lots of people know the answer to that one....where did they finish in the league, there's a tough one without Rothmans....
