| I don't have a problem with either. The club will always be Wires to me, I've never stood on the terraces and shouted "COME ON WOLVES!" because I'd feel like I was watching the wrong sport, at the wrong ground.
However, the club wasn't the Warrington Wires, and the whole point of SL and broadening the appeal of the game was to give towns, and locations a monicker to the neutral or new speccie. So Warrington Wolves is ok with me, from a marketing viewpoint - at least it's prescence on the town crest gives it some credibility.
I just thank the lord I'm not a Halifax fan who in the recent past had to pledge allegiance to the "Halifax Blue Sox".

| To be fair, very few people call us "The Wolves". I NEVER CALL US THE WOLVES!
Few if any other the Sky RL team refer us as the Wolves, its either Warrington Wolves or The Wire.....that is except for one person, Stevo! He constantly refers to us as only The Wolves!!
I can frigging hear him saying it in my head now!It gripes me every time he says it. Almost as if he knows it pi$$€$ me off!
Occasionally Eddie calls us "The Wolves" when he is along side Stevo, but he seems uncomfortable saying it.
I can only think of 2 SL teams that actually had an original nick name that was excepted as a club name that is instantly recognisable and has common usage, Saints and Wires(Wire), I could except Cas without argument. These names were promoted over the century by club and fans.
We are very fortunate to have a Nick name as the Wires as few clubs have such a privilege, and long should it continue.
Personally I have no issue with being called Warrington Wolves but not The Wolves as this is NOT our name and neither is it a Nick name or be it comfortable to say for us as Yed said.
I would like to see our club move away from the use of the title Wolves on the score board and out of tradition and because it is still our nick name use the title Wires.
Saints are not St Helens Saints but their Nick name is excepted so why not the Wires?
Drop Wolves from Warrington? No Never, it's been a great feature and opens up our club to more than just people from Warrington because of its expanded identity, like morrisseyisawire touches upon. Wolfie is a fantastic mascot and unofficially excepted as the best in SL. The RFL have used him as a mascot for England too.
So it's Warrington Wolves and The Wires for me, forever!
Love Warrington, love Wires. Hate Pies.

The Wire (bar a chant or two) means nothing to them.'"
Of course it means something to them because they recognise it as the identity of the club - hence the chanting. I doubt any of us on here regardless of our age were ever part of the wire pulling industry, but we all know the name of our club and so do the younger fans. If they believed they supported the Wolves they would be shouting for the Wolves. They don't and neither does anybody else. Rhinos, Bulls and one or two other names have worked. Wolves hasn't.

It's a marketing tool, yes, but what's cynical about it? Using a copyright design means most revenue from 'Warrington RL ' merchandise goes to the club, not to traders, probably not even RL fans, buying in items from China for sale and pocketing the profits themselves. I can't see that any fan would have an issue with that.

| It's not as if fake Warrington shirts are widely knocked up nd sold on markets worldwide is it? In fact plenty of those that are have the full team name on them anyway (eg "Manchester United"icon_wink.gif so the far east blaggers obviousy don't worry too much about copyright. If you go to Old Trafford the scarves on sale outside the ground usually just say "United" on them or something similar to get around it. If you go to Anfield you can buy lots of things outside the ground that say "Liverpool" because you can't copyright the name of a city, but you need to go into the official shop to find anything with "Liverpool FC" or "Liverpool Football Club" written on it due to copyright. If either of those clubs tried to change their name there would be absolute uproar though - see "Hull Tigers" as the example, and that is actually their traditional nickname anyway. Some things are simply sacred though, and club names absolutely should be.
We are Warrington RLFC.

| My lad's only 13 and I've never once heard him or any of his mates call us Wolves. I've only heard it from adults a few times and it's usually those who are new to the town.

| I cringe to the point where my face nearly turns inside out when someone refers to us as 'Wolves'. Just sounds naff and I hate how clubs now have an animal franchise thing going on. I don't see how it's more marketable, a t-shirt with 'The Wire' would outsell a t-shirt saying 'Wolves' and we all know it. Why? Because 'Warrington Wolves' sounds sissy and 'Warrington RLFC (the Wire)' doesn't. Warrington Wolves sounds cute and friendly and appealing to people who don't care about the score just as long as everyone has a nice time.

| Although a sceptic at first, Warrington Wolves has grown on me. We can't drop the Wolves behind Warrington imo.
BUT....STOP CALLING US WOLVES!
Yes I frigging hate it. Wolves is the nick name of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Warrington Wolves had its own nick name it is Wires!

| Well if you speak to the management at the club(as i've heard mr Dowson say at Squadbuilder meetings over the years) we're not Wolves, the wolves, we are Warrington Wolves.
Any person or media outlet that refers to us as otherwise is being lazy and inaccurate. Much like Graham Lovett, commentating from the "H 'and' J".
Personally, i don't give hoots, I just turn up as much as i can and support the team, i'm not gonna get my knickers in the twist over something and nothing for the sake of annoying myself, unlike a certain other person in this thread .

| The club now known as Sydney Roosters have merchandise with ESDRLFC on it rather than the modern crest. At the very least we should be embracing more of this sort of thing. Even I was tempted to buy a couple of the Wire T-shirts on Saturday. I didn't but I might in future. I'd be even more tempted if the Warrington Wolves branding was removed from them alogether, as Easts have done with the abovementioned merchandise.

| The old Roman settlement at Warrington was centred on Wilderspool and Stockton Heath and had a network of roads connecting it to Manchester, Chester etc. Since the old Roman name for the settlement was (probably) Veratinum we should perhaps call ourselves the Veratinum Wires. Mind you, they didn't make much wire in those days so we might have to change it to the Veratinum Togas.

Yes you can get around it by not using the club's full name ( where copyright exists in the name ). You may not be surprised to learn that many soccer clubs HAVE tried to copyright their town/city's name, but the courts have given them short shrift. The club wants to establish 'Wolves' as part of the official name of the club so that they, and only they, can produce merchandise with this brand. 'Wire' and 'RLFC' are public domain so anyone can use them. When modern branding was not around, lots of 'Wire' or 'Warrington' merch was sold by all and sundry - notably in my experience in 1974 when we won so many trophies. Lose the 'Wolves' part of the brand and, next time we get to Wembley, the stuff in Wolfware won't look much different to the gear sold around Wembley Stadium by chancer Londoners! The fact that Warrington does not attract anything like the volume of merch sales of the top soccer clubs is all the more reason to protect such sales as they do have!

| I am firmly in the 'Wire' camp.
I can't be doing with gimmicks. There's something about my personality that makes me screw my face up at the cheese in life. Can't be doing with reality TV, can't be doing with pop music, can't be doing with English sports teams adopting animals names. It's all too American/razzmatazz for me.
Fair enough if Leeds have really embraced their 'Rhinos' name...but for me and every Wire I know, we haven't embraced ours and many would rather see it go, even now, nearly two decades on. I wish we'd gone along the lines the two Hull clubs and St Helens did and stayed as Warrington RLFC.
We are 'Wire' or 'The Wire'. Wolves means absolutely nothing to me. I don't know if it does to any real Warringtonians with the Coat of Arms grey wolf in the middle...? As I'm not a Warringtonian I can't really answer that myself (seems like it doesn't reading this thread and to any Wires I know).
Good to see the club directing some merchandise at the masses who do see themselves and the club as 'Wire'.

I don't know how popular the Hull teams' nick names are today, so can't really comment perhaps a visitor from over there might pop on to this thriller of a thread and confirm. Widnes's association with Chemics isn't as widespread as it once was admittedly.
Cas' is that a nickname and as far as Salford are concerned haven't they just put it back in the team name they're very proud of Les Diables Rouge?
The relative success of keeping Wire alive is possibly due to the chanting and our massive repertoire and expert drumming
