In the 4 and a bit seasons he has been here ,He has probably underwhelming in every appearance bar a couple and at no point can I remember walking away from any game thinking Gleeson was man of the match today .
I will miss not having a purpose built at the club but can only hope that T.S and the club have something in the pipeline for this season as we have no at the club now Gleeson has gone,if we don't bring in a or 2 immediately it is season over for us regarding any hope of winning something.
I had an inkling that this season was a dead rubber when Lowes was only offered a 1 yr deal ,but when Smith came in I thought maybe he can turn it round ,but now Gleeson has gone and we have NO it is back to being a dead rubber again unless signings come pretty soon imo .

Disappointed he's gone but we know the reasons and it's been on for a long time happening.

I would have preferred Goulding to Mathers though.

I will say it slowly. 1)Gleeson would have moved to Oz at the end of the season and there would have been NO FEE. 2)Mathers was not formally part of the move, he was released (that means let go) and Wire signed him with no feeas he was a free agent.

Smith obviously did not fancy the Gleeson we had on our books. There is no doubt he has real talent but its certainly not showed this season or the second half of last season. Maybe the world leading team at Wigan will bring him surging back to his very best with their present dynamic form. Who knows, what is clear is that he needs to get his head back on straight again. I'm sure you and the guys at the JJB will give him your usual support to see him through any bad patches he might have, and think of the opportunities to mingle with him downtown Wigan.

I don't rate Mathers either but do you know what Wire are paying him? No I thought not. What is the case is that when he played for Smith before he was well thought of and TS obviously thinks he can get something out of him. Thats what a coach is for and for the first time for many years we appear to have one.

I bet Briers and a couple of others have a sleepless night or two about this.

The Wigan fans are treating this as the second coming and seem to forget that it was surely us who wanted him out and that is what has driven the deal.

Worst piece of business Wire could have done, so w paid 100k for one of your best players and you get Wigans worst player Richie Mathers, enjoy pulling your hair out guys!

It works on the fact that we had 1 at the club ,now we have none.Gleeson was never interested playing for us the big paycheck brought him here,
It does surprise me that he has gone to Wigan every fans forum I have been to and he has been there he has slagged Wigan off on every occasion saying how much he hates them ,I thought he may re-sign for Saints if he went to any club,the fact that interest from the NRL dried up says everything about Gleeson as a player, but we do now need 2 I just hope we can get them sooner rather than later !

What is this obsession with the Mathers thing? A minor part of the deal; if he comes good he comes good... we are hardly expecting him to even get selected never mind counting on him to be a key player.

We won't even see him for a while because he is out injured anyway.

Whether Mathers is worse or not I'm still chuffed to see the back of Gleeson. Now all we need is Briers and Bridge to follow suit and we might start looking good....

Probably mentally counting the money he will earn.

I think I would trust Tony Smith's judgment over Brian Nobles on what constitutes a good deal in the transfer market. TS now has £100k in the kitty, plus freed-up salary cap. Even if Mathers comes to nothing, he's still ahead. Gleeson is a top-notch player, but has rarely performed to his best standard for us, and would probably have left on a free at season-end anyway.

Well let's remember he'd been forced to Wire by his stupid betting thing. He even admitted himself he'd not been told he was being gotton rid of until it was happening. To my mind he's never made a secret of the fact he never wanted to be at the club.

Very suitable comments given the circumstances, I just hope thisdoesn't come back to bite us on the ar$e.

Read: Tony Smith was all too keen to pay for his train fare, 1st class from Bank Quay to Wigan North Western. So eager to see Gleeson out of the club, he was even prepared to throw in 4 cans of Special Brew and a copy of the Racing Post to keep Martin entertained during the journey.
