I agree, ever since the Long incident, he hasn't really lived up to his name at Bradford, and his career was always going to go one way once he joined Wakefield. Suppose this puts him out of his misery in a way.

As soon as I heard Newton had signed for Wakefield I suspected he was on drugs.

I think this could be the first stage of a nasty chapter in Super League, like the NRL went through 12 years ago or so when a few Newcastle Knights players got busted for drugs, and Brandon Pearson (who changed his name to Costin and came to play in England), Craig Field and so on. For a few years there's been bubbling rumours under the surface that if the testers REALLY got rigorous, then many players would be looking anxiously over their shoulders.

Bit like the MPs and their expenses this one, one of those things that nobody ever hoped would start coming out, else it would be like a whole pack of cards. The danger is if Newton's career is now over, and he's got nothing to lose, he might tell the RFL about who else is on it, and the witch hunt will commence.

That want to clean up the game, then start setting an example. Personally I do think drugs testing should be mandatory.

That's not danger IMO, I hope it happens, just I hope Cullen and Carney get "asked" by the RFL about their allegations last night on boots 'n all.

The RFL should first of all pick a couple of clubs and turn up at training unknown to the clubs and test every player.

Next week do it again, and again. Then pick another club and so on. Tell the clubs it's going to use some of their Sky money to fund the testing.

I don't care which clubs the players come from, including Wigan, let's get rid of these embarrassments to our game.

One thought that did occur to me in the Newton case is that he was injured towards the end of last season, what if he ill advisedly took "medication" to help the injury heal. So I'm not going to give him too much stick yet until the results are published.

Apparantely, according to the above report on BBC News website, Newton "self-administered human growth hormone".

What a sad way to end his career. There aren't words to describe the stupidty of players who do these things. I almost think this type of drug is worse than heroine of coke as it means he's a cheat and has took it with the intention of cheating, not going out and partying on a weekend. Such a shame for Wakefield and the sport.

Cullen said that a rumour doing the rounds was that growth hormone doesn't show up on the test.... Guess thats 1 rumour that can be put to bed.

Personally I find this kind of drug worse than somebody taking recreational. I know they are illegal and the players are role models but I think there should be stronger punishments for people who try to cheat at the game.

I Would like to see a mass test done on all players, however, I do know that the costs are high.
