I stand corrected, based on that he clearly did at least sign.
(He did go on to play for Leeds Academy before returning to Wire on loan).

The problem with buying Inglis is that whilst it will be a big crowd pleaser, it brings problems for the coach in picking a side. At centre he displaces King and Keanan Brand whilst in the BR you would need to choose either Hughes or Currie to step back with no opportunity for eg Livett (if he returns) or Robson. Inglis is an exciting signing, but a commercial one taken no doubt by our CEO.

You talk about it as though those players you name will bring as much to the side as Inglis.
Even if Inglis is only 50-60% of his full talent, then he walks into any SL side.
Your problem with the other players becomes irrelevent. It simply means a coach has to tell them to be professional enough to play for the remaining places in the side.

Yes, there is no doubt that wherever he plays he will strengthen the side. And I agree all players need to be challenged to fight for places. But I would say the weakness in the current squad lies with Latu, Akauola, Davis, Luis Jonson, Kibula and to a lesser extent Jason Clark (so far this year). Add in an ageing Hill and Cooper and you have a strong argument to spend good money on a top class prop.

| Obviously I don't know the details of Inglis' deal but all the talk has been that he's not on massive money. If that's the case then he's an oportunistic, rather than a targeted, signing but one well worth the risk.
It doesn't alter the fact that we are short in the pack, specifically at prop, but I'm sure that we're still working on that. The problem, as has already been pointed out further up the thread, is that there simply aren't that many good props around. Cooper is a home grown talent and Hill was an exceptional find but pickings have been somewhat slim since then. Akauola frustrates, Latu has all the hallmarks of a panic buy and Kibula was a questionable signing who looks as though he's here to play in the reserves.

I think that Lewis Johnson (SR) is the player furthest away from fitness. Assuming that all the other players missing from round 7 are ready to return (Hughes, Ashton and Dean) then I think that the starting lineup, 1 to 13, for round 8 will pretty well be according to squad number with Jason Clark and Joe Philbin on the bench. After that, has Latu done enough in training to get a spot on the bench ahead of Akauola and is Ashton fit enough to take the last spot ahead of Mamo? Whatever happens for the next game all of the squad should get a chance over the coming weeks.

| Injuries will happen in 2020. It’ll not be a huge concern. King will learn more from GI. Playing 2nd fiddle for while is a small price to pay for such investment. Look what Johns did for Briers game.
It’s not ruled out completely that GI might do 2 seasons yet. You’re a long time retired and GI has a stuck his big toe there once.

Inglis' arrival causes literally no problem in picking the side.
A problem is what happens when you are stacked with talent at a position and worried that you're going to put someone's nose out of joint and make them want to move on. None of those names that are going to miss out are irreplaceable. If Inglis had joined when Tony Smith was here, I'm sure TS would have been ruthless enough to put him in ahead of Rhys Evans and not stressed about trying to find him a place.
The priority is to try and win SL, not to find places in the side to fit existing favourites in. Top teams have churn all the time when players get displaced by better incoming signings.

Rhys Evans had the raw talent to be anything. He was up against himself though, not player competition. Just injury and recouping continually.

I can see where you are coming from, but if you put Inglis into the second row you have to tell Currie or Hughes that they are stepping back, and whilst neither of those players are outstanding they would certainly walk straight into most SL teams. Worse still, they would see inferior players like Akauola / Latu / Davis etc albeit in a different position, getting regular game time. With the current issue of players taking a pay cut whilst the club still brings in big name signings, that's not going to help much with squad morale.
If you are a coach you have a single focus; winning SL. But the CEO will be focussed on winning and ensuring the club is financially healthy. That is why I think this is not simply an opportunity to bring in a better player to strengthen our team, its also about signing a world class player with a big reputation that hits the news, excites the fans and advertisers and sponsors alike. If it had been a prop it would have been a perfect signing and ticked both boxes.

| Name a realistic prop signing presently available who would tick the box of getting the public excited and bringing the crowds in.
Yes, we need a prop, but whoever we could realistically get isn't going to get the pulse racing with the excitement that signing Inglis has.

The evidence to date would suggest that the one we have signed, Latu, is in many ways the same standard as Morley. The problem is that Morley is now 43 and hasn't played for five years.

This happens in every team sport. Cullen put Westwood in second row and it spelt the end of the road for Paul Noone, who had been a pretty promising prospect. Noone moved on to Harlequins and the dressing room morale survived.
Currie and Hughes are experienced pros and they know how RL goes, sometimes players get replaced by new signings, some will get fired up by the challenge of proving themselves better, others will mope and moan. As long as Inglis performs, it won't be an issue. The issues for squad morale come if Inglis turns out to be garbage, and is getting picked every week because he's a big name, and the whole squad knows the guy he replaced was better. Then it's a problem for the credibility of the coach with the squad so he has to address it quickly.
