My remark was not meant to be a slight on the sterling efforts of all the ground staff over the years but you cannot make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. On occasions the pitch resembled a beach because of all the sand that had been put on to make it playable.
I would say that Headingly is the best pitch I have seen in Rugby League.
Having said that, like all Warrington fans, I am immensely sad that the old ground will soon be no more because I have many fond memories of it, particularly as a youngster. I will always remember the excitement and anticipation I felt as I smelled the embrocation coming from the dressing rooms as I made my way to the Kop end to cheer on our heroes who were like demigods to us kids. Funny how such things stay in your mind.

watching Leeds saints last night the pitch is a disgrace to professional sport

in fact there's more grass on the aerial shot of wilderspool than at headingly........

Wakefields playing surface used to be a very good one....I've known players say it was the best (dire ground though)

Thought I'd resurrect this thread, as the demolition is well under way. Popped over today on my way to town and the Brian Bevan stand is almost gone, as is the Railway End.

i was quite happy NOT going to wilderspool anymore, just not going down the causeway, NOT thinking anything was going on..then i saw that.

Not ashamed to say there's a tear in my eye, a lot of memories in that pile of rubble.

And so the curtain fails on the vestiges of my youth, no time for a final curtain call.

Time to pop Joy Division on the old turntable, methinks.

Just looking through some pics on the Warrington memories site on Facebook and someone has posted the demolition pics.....gutted!

If you get a copy of rugby league or rugby league 2 for the PC and playstation 2 you can play on Wilderspool anytime you want.

I was a heavy user of the developers forum when the the was game being developed, I asked the programmers to keep Wilderspool on the RL2 even though we were at the HJ and they did.

It's my sad duty to report that the final remaining piece of Wilderspool has fallen. The scoreboard was bulldozed today and there is now nothing left. There's a video of it if you can bear to watch.

Rugby League 2 is available on PC? There I was thinking my scratched ps2 disc had ruined my chances of enjoying that game again!

Such memories.........

When my Wife & I bought our 1st house in Latchford in the very early 80's I would walk to Wilderspool & back & each Sunday afternoon my Wife would get a Sunday Roast ready for 5pm when I got home. I was always freezing cold because it was Winter RL then.

That's heart breaking - the only saving grace is that without the rest of the Fletcher End there, I can kid myself it's not really the scoreboard!

I used to drive from Macclesfield, park at my mums in Burgess Ave and walk over the field onto the Causeway

Sad day, indeed.
It's almost been like torture in the last couple of months, driving past and seeing chunks disappear.
Every other Sunday (and Friday nights for A-Team games) from 1979-2003, now gone.

I feel like playing The Last Post.

It's still our home (in my eyes, and always will be)
B0ll0cks to having dry feet after you've been for "a gypsy's", Wilderspool for ever.

Remember going there with my dad for my first RL game at 11 with my dad, I couldn't get enough of the atmosphere and was hooked straight away, changing ends with my mates each game, the smell of deep heat as you walked past the changing rooms.
