| I've been listening to Green Day since Dookie came out in about 94/95ish and have seen them live at Reading 2001 and 2004. They're the best "big" headline band I've ever seen (obviously I've seen hundreds of better gigs in small venues) and both times were pre-American Idiot, although in 2004 they opened with American Idiot itself as the album had been recorded but not yet released so they didn't play anything else off it.
I haven't seen them since as I very very rarely go to £40 a ticket arena gigs (although I might be tempted by the cricket ground next summer) but in my opinion American Idiot is their best album.

| I keep hearing this Mumford & Sons single on Radio 1, and whilst I enjoy a bit of folk music as much as the next man, I have to question how on earth it has managed to make its way onto the Radio 1 playlist??
Call me cynical, but I get the feeling that the Radio 1 playlist committee isn't quite as straight and down the line as they would like people to believe....I mean, when in the last 10 years as Radio 1 been open to stuff that sounds to my ears like Pogues/Waterboys/Men They Couldn't Hang rip off material??....Now, all of a sudden, they can't get enough of this great, new, young folk band and all the dj's are jumping on the bandwagon, as though they are under instruction to...

| Does anybody else here like Big Country? I think they are fantastic, they were unbelievable performers live. Strangely they only had a couple of big hit singles ("in a big country dreams stay with you" and "look away, look away"icon_wink.gif but their whole catalogue is full of fantastic music. They did some superb anthems, then they could do slow ballads without them sounding gay, a lot of their music had socialist political undertones to it.
I went to see them as a teenager, still the most amazing crowd atmosphere I've ever been in, it was full of hard working class Glaswegian men and the patriotic fervour was incredible. In the middle bridge of one of their songs, they started freestyling traditional Scottish songs on their electric guitars making them sound like bagpipes, all the tattooed tartan meatheads started crying while they were bouncing around on each other. Me and my mates started crying as well. Amazing scenes but the atmosphere pulled you in, their music is infectious.
Sadly Stuart Adamson committed suicide so they are no more.

I've heard one or two of their songs and I was quite impressed. Are all of their songs in that odd language, if you could call it that?

They use a mixture of Vonlenska (also known by it's English translation Hopelandic) which is a language created by Sigur Ros, and they mix that in with Icelandic.
On their latest album the last song is their first song in English. They can all actually speak English very well, as can most Icelandic people.

All of their albums are well worth a listen (well, as long as you are quite open minded about the vocalist's singing style!)....Lyrically, its all quite obscure, as the other poster points out, they use a 'made-up' language and mix it with Icelandic, and even the band have said that their lyrics are created in order for the listener to interpret as they see fit.... To confirm this rather confusing logic, one of their albums is 8 tracks, of which 7 repeat the same made up lyric over and over, with the other an instrumental!!....The album has no title, thus it is often known as the 'Untitled' album, or simply '( )' and the inner sleeves are left blank in order for the listener to create their own words!!
Still despite all this, they are, in my opinion, one of the best bands in the world today and are certainly one of the greatest live...Their show in Blackpool last year was incredible, with one of the best light shows you could wish to see...

| I may download an album of theirs soon, then. I'm not really someone who just listens to one specific group/band/artists or whatever, I'll just download an album, listen to it for a week then download another.
Downloaded the Daft Punk album 'Alive 2007' the other day and it's outstanding. They're a bit poppy but the music's so catchy and just hearing it live is even better. Definitely a good album that's quality right the way through, there aren't just two or three good tracks, it's all quality.

Now don't get me wrong I *love* Journey but as X-Factor aren't covering the song now I'd rather have a song telling SImon Cowell to "**** you I won't do what you tell me"

| I'm not one for Facebook (I am registered but never use it) but I had a look as someone mentioned that RATM thing and it is quite amusing.
I love Rage (I was devoed not to see them before they split up but made up to finally get the chance at Reading 200icon_cool.gif and I've never seen a single episode of X-Factor/Pop Idol/whatever so I might purchase KITN from iTunes next week, despite obviously already owning the album.
Will it work though? I haven't paid attention to the charts for about fifteen years but I'm informed that they're now nothing like how I remember them. Since downloads started getting counted meaning pretty much any song could end up number one in theory, have any of these online campaigns actually worked?

| There's been a lot of media coverage about the campaign to get RATM to number one this year. Some has been positive: [urlhttp://www.rockradio.co.uk/rock-news/rage-against-the-cowell-machine/q21vkhx6/[/url and some of it not so:[urlhttp://www.nme.com/blog/index.php?blog=10&p=7690[/url. It's been mentioned (and supported by) such prominent personalities as Bill Bailey, Phil Jupitus, Mike Sweeney and Zane Lowe.
The criticisms around the whole debate being:
- RATM were an anti-establishment band and by pushing their single to no.1 we are actually buying into the 'establishment' that they sang against.
- RATM are represented by Sony, as is X-Factor, so the money is still going to the same place.
- Song choice could have been better than a 17-year-old Rap Metal track.
- X-Factor is giving money to charity so we're taking money away from poorly kids.
Of course the people that are spouting these points are the people that have missed the point entirely. First and foremost this is a bit of fun. Although it does have an underlying message. The rubbish that X-Factor churns out every year is not representative of a majority of the UK population. I still remember the days when Iron Maiden were on TOTP. The FB group is seeking to bring back the days when there was real competition for chart places and music meant something.
'KITN' was chosen for it's "f*** you I won't do what you tell me" lyrics, changed quite cleverly to "f*** you I won't buy what you sell me" by the FB group and anti-establishment message. Yes there is the argument that by buying the single you are buying into the establishment but unfortunately it's the only way to prove that manufactured rubbish like X-Factor doesn't hold the monopoly on popular music these days.
I can kinda see the argument from the charity angle but what people are forgetting is X-Factor fans won't turn away in droves and suddenly buy RATM. Anyone who was going to buy the XF single will still do so, infact more people probably will to try and counteract what we are doing. The campaign is for people like me, who are into rock music and wouldn't dream of buying a single these days. Plus the FB group is raising money for Shelter ("so nobody has to be on the streets at Christmas"icon_wink.gif and is currently on nearly £3k: [urlhttp://www.justgiving.com/ratm4xmas[/url
You asked if any of these campaigns have actually worked? Last year, when Alexandra Burke released her awful version of Jeff Buckley's 'Hallelujah' there was a similar campaign to get the original version to no.1 in stead. It got to no.2. Which goes to show that these things can, and do work. The FB group currently has over 470'000 members. Everyone can buy up to 3 copies of the song (one from each official retailer) to count towards the Christmas chart, from registered outlets 7Digital, Play.com and iTunes. Alexandra Burke sold 500'000ish copies last year to make no.1. I reckon it's do-able!
I'm completely in support of the campaign. Not least because I hate X-Factor. A part of me would also love to see all the music stations have to play a song with the word "f***" in over Christmas
(In fairness to NME, another of their staff went on to write this article: [urlhttp://www.nme.com/blog/index.php?blog=10&p=7696&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1#more7696[/url)

How does a live album by Daft Punk work??....Apart from the crowd noise, I would presume its pretty much as on the record??...
Whilst acts like Daft Punk, Chemical Brothers, etc, certainly provide a quality live experience, I'm a little confused as to how it would work listening on a cd at home? ....
