| Quote ="JWP"There's people on this thread that i'll listen all day long too, but they've got me today, just not getting it.
Why is this not a good deal ?
There's many factors,
Financially we get £100k for a bloke that was obviously leaving for the NRL at the end of the year, so effectively on a free. We've never been thrifty as a club, so I don't doubt he'll be given the funds to re-invest.
Smith has set down a marker, for donkeys years we've talked about players treating our club as a doss house, 'player power' and that rubbish, we've cried out for a bloke to come in and overhaul this, we've got it and now folk are getting back on the fence. Gleeson obviously told Smith of his intentions/feelings what you will, Smith has made it happen.
We paid £200k, we got back £100k. So it's what £25k a season if you look at it like that, most teams pay money and get zilch return, hoe much did Leeds get back for Ellis ? We paid £50k for Vinnie, and he's done ten times less than Gleeson ever did. I think we've brokered a good deal, to recoup half of what we paid.
I've loved watching him, I think he's class, but I think he's heartless too. I've never felt he had any affiliation with our club, he didn't attend functions and stuff, he's just 'done his job' in his eyes, no more no less. So in the same way, i'm not too bothered that he's going.
If we have to take a step back to go forwards then so be it, I mean that. We're not obviously that great a team, we're 12th, so having flair obviously doesn't guarantee success. I think Smith is going to try and get 17 hard working, team orientated people on a pitch every week, and when the work ethic, and levels of cconcentration are as they should be, then he'll start to look at adding the nice touches, the flair if you will, but he won't substitute flair for effort & commitment, so unless your going to put that in, you won't play, and he obviously feels we either have the players to put this in now, or we can get them.
PJ said in his interview that folk drop balls in training and stuff, Gleeson strikes you as a bloke that wouldn't fancy training too hard every day. If we're looking for 24/7 proffessionals, he doesn't strike you as one.'"

| Smith must look for something in a player, be it ability wise, lifestyle, desire, hunger, whatever, but he must.
He's shown before by signing - Bai, Mckenna, Dunneman etc that he's certainly not against 'experienced' players.
He's shown that if the kids are good enough, he'll play you.
I don't think he has too many pre-concieved ideas about good & bad, I think he judges on what he sees, I really do. And what job you can do for 'His Team' and I very much think it's his team.
He's made a judgement call that we can do without him, I back him 10,000,000%.

| Gleeson has been excellent for the Wire. Enjoyed watching him play and he'll be missed. Scored and created plenty on our right side and will be a real asset for Wigan.
He didn't want to play for us anymore. He had already been asked to be released this year to play NRL or for the same reason in 2010. No point keeping a player who doesn't want to stay. I trust Tony Smith completely - if he didn't want him to go, he wouldn't. If he's happy, I am.
He'll be lining up for kick offs right where I stand at the HJ. I won't be giving Gleese any stick at all.

A man who talks sense. People who think this is anything other than a good deal for the club are just plain wrong. As clearly stated he would have left for free at the end of the season anyway.

Totally agree. Tony Smith will not have taken this step lightly and will have his reasons. I trust TS implicity to do the right thing for Warrington and, I suspect, this is just the first step in a wider strategy in making additions to the squad.
I wish Gleeson well with Wigan and certainly wont be deriding him when he's playing for an opposing side.

I don't think it's a case of whether Mathers is better than Riley, it's whether Mathers is better than Reardon, and I reckon it's a decent replacement.
Some of the salary cap must have been freed up as well, hinting a replacement for Gleeson.
Gleeson & Reardon out.
Mathers + 100k + extra salary cap in.
= a new centre and more professional players.
'"
The only problem with that is that I doubt there is a new centre lined up because that new centre was Goulding.
Anyway, this is a good deal for Wire. I won't lose any sleep about Gleeson going and it seems Smith wants to build a good, young hard-working team based on up and coming British talent that grow and develop as a unit.

Whether it proves a mistake, or not, in the future is not the point. The point is that I agreed with JWP's post and rationale at the present time. In relation to TS, of course he can, and will, make mistakes but based on his record of being the best qualified coach we have had in years, I trust him implicitly in this decision. It would have been very easy for lesser coaches (such as Lowes and PC) to keep their head down and to let Gleeson run out the rest of his contract in apparent disallusionment and alleged unprofessionalism. TS has put his head above the parapet and made the big decision, and I commend him for that. This comes off the back of recently dropping the "undroppable" Briers then publicly commending his performance when Briers reacted positively to the warning shot. All of these are signs that TS will not back away from the tough calls which undoubtable need to be made.

I dunno, it makes no sense to me otherwise. I don't see how you can lose a world class player like Gleeson and not replace him. Unless like you say he goes for home grown talent and uses one of our existing players to fill his place, but even then there is not at centre at the club who is as good as Gleeson atm.

| Its a good deal all round, we need a creative centre, we have a winger in Roberts who has a great try scoring record. But as per we did to Calderwood we are ruining him with poor centre play.
He seems like he doesnt want to be a Wire player any more, so great for both clubs and maybe this is what he needs to spark him back into life.
And of course if rumours are correct, we get shut of penis hands mathers.

There's not a at the club full stop ,we need 2 now instead of 1 we have been playing Johnson and Grix at and they are both forwards,
The good news is we now have salary cap space to do this and if Reardon goes as well we will have enough space for two decent ,but we need them A.S.A.P ,next season won't do we need them now or we can right this season off from now on imo .

I just dont see how wigan can get him inside the cap without loosing mathers? Is there only me in Warrington who still thinks Mathers will be good for us?

That's bizarre, calderwood was never a player who required on being fed by a centre to score trys, most of his coming from kick chases and tap re-starts.
i mean, he played outside chev walker FFS.

It will be difficult to get another centre now unless we are prepared to splash the cash. Everyone will be under contract.
I bet there is now some frantic ringing around players agents going on!

you'd like to think nrl, where they seem to be quite happy at releasing players early to pick up the $$$ over here. Can't think of many actual centres that i'd splash the cash on to get over here mid season other than the usual obvious targets.

| plenty of people keep saying (esp pie eaters) mathers is rubbish etc.
but to be fair, our onfield performance, for me, is still in a crisis, despite the last 2 superleague wins i don't think we are anywhere near good enough yet even if a big injection of confidence was put into the current team and so mathers may not take us to dizzy heights but i reckon he'll be a decent short term gain for us and if he does find some of his old form then even better we've got a top player
