Cullen has been away from sport long enough to be behind the times when it comes to techniques and coaching. Would be nice to have him involved, something alongside Richard Mathers' role.'"
im not sure 'Orford Mike' played over 300 games over 16 years... but i know what you're saying.
Does an assistant need to be well up on coaching techniques under a proper head coach? More than likely needs to be an arm round the shoulder, a pat on the back and a word in the ear.
Look at our last assistant... he was well clued up in the ways of modern RL and squash.
Either way.. whatever the role, i would like to see him back at the club.... probably wont happen though.

| Not too sure about the sentiment of keeping ex-players and ex-coaches around on the staff. Sometimes you need a clean break away from any of the old culture to make things work differently and better.
I'd happily take anyone without any Wires connection so long as they can bring us the GF win we so desire.

Whoever comes in looks like having very little to work with unless we have some signings on ice. We are obviously not a honey pot of a club judging by how long it is taking to find anyone who seems interested in the job & if no scouting work has been done in this field earlier in the season it looks like the higher management were happy to maintain the status quo for next season. Come on, do you really think that Smith announces his resignation on the Sunday and KF flies out Monday morning to Aus. Do you not think that this was planned weeks ago and the trip arranged around the announcement. And we have not already been talking to coaches and players. Regardless of the on field achievements this season the club is still run well and organised. We are not just starting form now with recruitment and replacement, but if it helps for you to spout negativity again then fine keep going if it makes you happy

You seem to make a large number of assumptions without any evidence. The suggestion that the supposed delay in announcing a new coach equates to trying to find someone who is interested, beggars belief. Would you really want such an important decision to be made in haste?

| The Mole (love him or hate him) has just replied to a tweet saying he thinks the Maloney move has a chance, and when was asked who he thinks our next coach will be, he said Maguire.

| Well from what i have heard from people close to the club, the mutual decision for Smith to stand down was only made hours before it was announced, so is it possible the club were not already scouting for a coach & were quite happy for the status quo to continue ? There doesn't seem to be a stampede beating a path to the HJ, but just like everyone else i am allowed an opinion.

| Maybe the interested parties thought the time was right to discuss matters but you would have thought the club were privy to Smith's disillusionment with the game....or has he kept that thought close to his chest till the time was right to air his views. But you would think the hierarchy in the club would have twigged things have not been right this season on the pitch or behind the scenes.

| It now seems most the coaches at front of the betting for our coach, are now strongly linked to the Titans and Bulldogs positions. And Des Hassler as made an appearance at 10/1.

As long as he stays away from coaching defence and team discipline. Chach would be one of the lads again in a heartbeat. Be like lord of the flies.

Quote ="Captain Hook"Or " if we sack Smith MID SEASON who do we replace him with?"

LOL I knew it would catch one seeking to defend that ridiculous "there is no-one else" position. Saints seem to have done alright currently at 7/2* for the GF win after taking action early in the MID SEASON with their non-household name
Again there is nothing like a bit of web research and certainty of the facts to defeat an argument. At the time (April 11th) Saints were linked with the following**
David Fairleigh
David Furner
Geoff Toovey
Jason Demetriou
Jason Taylor
Ian Millward
Tim Sheens
Daniel Anderson
Furthermore Saint Helens had the balls to make the change without being in a rush for a replacement. ***

"Linked with" as in internet rumours? I appreciate you are the Mystic Meg of RL Fans but Holbrook was hardly a stand out candidate. And Cunningham had no pedigree as a coach unlike our coach (who obviously had some credit in the bank with the Board and some fans).

The very fact that STs went ahead and made the change sees them tonight playing Salford for a place in the Grand Final semis, I think that in itself speaks volumes for the need for action and not submission.

| As the new thread made by the guy suggested, this time they have actually suspended betting rather than remove it. Will have to go look at NRL it could be as i said earlier some of the few top if betting for our coach could of taken a job at Titans or Bulldogs.

| Just seen the Telegraph.au that Dean Pay as put his hand up for the Bulldogs role, could be the explanation for betting being suspended as he was 6/5 favourite.

It's not the first time,it was totally off the screen altogether a few days ago. Fatbelly a poster on here said he had gone into Betfred to try put a bet on and couldn't even when they had phoned head office, and this time they have merely suspended it.

If we had sacked Smith halfway through the season we wouldn't have had any chance of getting Maguire. He wasn't available then but he is now so I wouldn't be d if it meant we landed him. SJM is desperate to get him here.

Yes I posted about that on here, Hasler suddenly made an appearance on the betting on Tuesday, he had not been on before an all of a sudden he was on at 10/1.

| Just studying all the news outlets in Aus, it seems Pay is favourite for Bulldogs, Brennan is being suggested for Titans and nobody knows what Maguire wants. And it looks like Hasler is going to be busy suing Bulldogs, know idea were this leaves us, you got to love speculation
