those rules are just a guideline, you don't have to follow them to the letter

ok you might get a slap on the wrist from the RFL and a couple of points deduction but there's no international financial regulator going to come down on the club if it breaches them

I assume it's been mentioned elsewhere on this thread, but if anyone can get the best out of Mathers and Goulding, it would be Tony Smith. IMO, one of his biggest strengths as a coach is hiding players' weakness and exposing their strengths.

Problem is, I don't think Mathers has any strengths

Are you basing this judgement however, on his performances for Leeds - under Tony Smith - or his injury blighted stint in Ockerland, or perhaps his time at Wigan?
Let's be fair to the lad, that club has become a bit of a career graveyard for mid-top end SL players in the recent years, such as Orr, Moran, even Godwin and Higham to some extent.
I feel he has a lot of useful strengths, especially his role in the Leeds attacking line, which I felt went underrated; he was often taking over the first/second reciever role when one of the holy trinity of Burrow-Sinfield-McGuire were caught in possession and/or out of position.

Plus, any cash from the deal could be put to bring in Shenton, or, failing that, to be pumped firther into the youth academy and perhaps in a few years, we'll see the likes of our own Mendieka (sp?) banging on the door of the England squad.
(NB: I only use Mendieka's name as purely an example, I'm not cherry picking him out for messiah-like status)

I read if a player gets paid off then it is the compensation that becomes his salary cap value and that this is spread over the duration of his (ex)contract with a club. So his old salary cap value is gone.

So if Wigan paid Mathers off with £1 then that is his salary cap vale for the remainder of his contract. If that were two years it would be 50p a year!

Seems odd to me but there you go.

The interesting thing is with a transfer the player won't normally get a pay off from his old club. So are you suggesting if Gleeson left he would not incur any salary cap liability whatsoever to Wire this season?

If so where is this stated the regulations?

Mathers is a very simple equation for me:-

If it's the Mathers from Leeds, I'd take him like a shot.

If it's the Mathers from Wigan, I'd rather not bother and keep Riley at FB.

If anyone is going to get the best out of him, surely its TS.

I'd still like to know who the first choice centres are going to be for us if Gleeson does do one.

I am of the opinion that if the deal went through Wigan would have blazed it all over their Web Site (Should have checked prior to this). I hope this is a long April fool and we can get back to normality from the morning.

spoke to a player earlier he said he had already gone just arguing over money, and he as asked to leave a couple times he wasnt to impressed with mathers but looking forward to the other lad he also stated that the offer was to good to turn down
