1980/81 season Warrington won the Lancashire Cup, John Player and were runners up in the league whilst, I think, Wigan were in the 2nd division.

Just to let you know i support Saints not Wigan.

Wigan would not have been at the top so long had it been a level playing field, they are best remembered for ruining the game in the 90s, even the wigan fans were fed up of winning every week, now we have the salary cap things are much fairer.

A bizarre boast considering for the vast majority of those years Rugby League didn't even have relegation but I think we're all happy Wiganers to give you that one.

One year in the 70s you know, when the league split into two divisions, Wigan only narrowly avoided relegation on points difference (finishing 16th) but that still qualfied them for the play offs to be crowned champions. The RFL have always been clueless! I forget who knocked them out in the first round of the play offs though.

Anyroad that relegation was the best thing that ever happened to Wigan and our poor late 2005/early 2006 the second best thing. Good things come from bad times.

Probably plenty of teams that have never been relegated from the top league.

We aren't the only team to have never been relegated, I think Leeds are with us on that, but we're the only one to have always been in the top flight. Leeds were in the second tier when they made the first split, got promoted and were never out of the top flight after that.

It's a notable achievement and one which was worth fighting for when we were in trouble in 2002, but to compare it with Wigan's record is ridiculous, I think any of us would have taken relegation in 2002 if it meant we came back up and started winning the league and Challenge Cup every year, like Wigan did for so long.

As for "ruining the game" personally that was my favourite era of rugby, the great Wigan team with Hanley, Edwards and Dean Bell in it, was a benchmark for everybody else to chase....to get a win over Wigan was a famous achievement. I preferred the era when they dominated to the Saints era which came in SL.

Don't think that statement is strictly true, saints have never been relegated they just weren't able to field a team for financial reasons during one season (i think it was in 1916)!
