| if this were to happen in the next round of franchises i do hope the RFL would have enough forethought to make fixtures back to back.. ie warrington play catalan dragons one week and tolouse the following week thus enabling people to stay in france rather than two lots of flights each season, this could be rolled out for all english/welsh based clubs making it a little cheaper for the fans who travel away.
just a thought..

| I understand your point but on the flip side fans who can't just make a week long holiday out of it for whatever reason might not be overjoyed about the cost of travelling to France in back to back weekends and may prefer the two games to be a few months apart.
Swings and roundabouts.

Agreed. But on the flip side, with the exception of Widnes, Tolouse will offer a lot more to Rugby League than any other English side. Whether that will change by 2011/2014 remains to be seen

Disagree, Widnes are a super league club playing in the championship, they are much more qualified for super league than any cumbrian club. Widnes will bring fans, young players, great stadium...
Barrow who are the best cumbria have don't really have as much as Widnes do. They have potential.
If you are talking about needing a team, RL needs a team in PNG maybe a few more in NZ and another in France, maybe even in scotland and ireland.

Cumbria is as much part of the heartland of RL as Wigan Leeds etc, we have a big gne pool of untapped talent and a professional side with a good youth development programme would be a benefit to the game and btw big things will be happening at Barrow in the future from the sounds of things being whispered up this way at the moment

I couldn't care less, if the players are good enough then other teams will pick them up. They don't have the stadia or fan base to be in super league.

As someone who travels from Manchester to Warrington games I can confirm large numbers of Leeds fans often do this on the train as it passes Old Trafford on our way to Wire V Rhinos.
I hate United probably more than they do but still...

Haha.
I'm not an expansionist by any stretch of the imagination and to be honest I think a lot of Super League club fans who are show a bit of an, "I'm all right Jack" attitude at times.
How would Wire fans who want Toulouse or whoever in the league feel if we were in the position of Widnes, Halifax, Featherstone, Leigh etc etc etc? Or even current Super League clubs like Salford, Wakefield and Castleford who would be favourites for the boot?
All of the above have rugby league history as long as we do and fans who care about their club as much as we do ours. Why should they be cast aside in favour of expansion? We were lucky we got the investment required to build the HJ and stayed up in 2002.
Had we failed on either of those two counts our present position could be very different. Would we then be happily going to Wilderspool to watch Championship games saying, "Ah well, it was our club's own fault so we just have to accept our lot now. I hope Toulouse get a franchise because it's for the good of the game"?
No we would not and the supporters of those clubs shouldn't have to either.

not a bad post at all. all very good arguements for not having expansion. rugby league is quite a strange creature though, as there are very few serious money men involved, and a lot of the people who are running the business side of rugby league, are doing it to make money. they are doing it to keep clubs in existance. thats why the rl are putting such draconian fanancial constraints on clubs you have mentioned, and others. it is though setting in motion a plan which will ensure the longevity of clubs who start looking after the business side better. it makes no sense for a club which can't afford to shoot for super league to try and bankrupt its self getting there. there are no winners in this scenario, so it does make a certain amount of sense for the franchise system to minimise the risk of this happening to clubs. warrington got the investment, and got the work done and moved to a new ground because they knew that there would be a chance of not getting a francise if we were still at wilderspool. other clubs have finacial plans in place to do the same, and that should be applauded.
what would the concencus be if this happened? isn't this the sort of project and scheme that rugby league is crying out for? wouldn't it be amazing if this actually came off, someone wants to put a rugby league club into super league and has such ambition to follow it though. would this not be a better option than waiting for featherstone to get the finances and ground in order?
Max Guazini, the multi-millionaire owner of the Stade de France, and the casino-owning Patouche family want the 13-a-side code back.
The job of returning Super League to the French capital - Paris St Germain lasted three seasons from 1995 - has been handed to Bernard Laporte.
I understand Laporte, the former French Minister of Sport and French rugby union international coach, was in England this week to meet the Rugby League International Board to update them on the project.
Stade Francais, the union team also owned by Guazini, recently pulled in 80,000 for a Top 14 fixture with Toulouse. And Guazini is convinced 'the other code' would be equally successful in Paris - though probably in a newly-built 30,000-40,000 capacity venue.
