| More than a coincidence that when Briers is absent, we lose.
The hard part is going to be replacing him. Who is a REALISTIC target to be our lead playmaker?
The obvious candidate is Jonathan Thurston; out of contract and a fine player, I just can't see him leaving Australia.
Matt Orford is in the same category, but at 31 it is pretty much a like-for-like, longevity wise. I couldn't see the point.
John Morris is available, but I don't personally think he is up to much.
The curve ball is Ben Roberts. Going well at the Bulldogs, NZ international and has age on his side. I would imagine he is quite affordable, relative to the other off contract players.
Myler is another one, but a hefty transfer fee may compromise that one.
As for SL based halfbacks, I'm at a loss as to who is truly available.

| Was thinking of Roberts t'other day. Being in SL doesn't nessercarily have a negative effect on NZ international chances and I'm sure the beng he'd be on here would be favourably comparable to his current wage down under.
As an outside shout in SL, perhaps TS could work his magic on someone like Thorman?

Got to agree, especially on the British front there are no other half backs. My other choice would be Orford but i didnt realise he was 31, as mentioned before it would be like for like. I think we need a bit of consistency ie a half back who will be at the club for a good few years, so we can build around them rather than have to change in a couple of years time. Myler will come at a cost but i would pay good money for him as i think he is a class act. It may come down to a bidding war between Warrington Saints and Wigan. Just depends on who wants/needs him the most.

| Would we have won today if Briers had played 80 minutes?
It makes you wonder how any other team in the competition is ever able to win games, seeing as Warrington are the only team to have Briers? Who do other teams have at halfback...?

| Think Myler is the one for me. Ok he will command a transfer fee, but will be far cheaper in wages than any of the other Aussie imports mentioned

Be as dismissive as you like. Firstly, I have no interest in how other teams operate. Secondly, there is a definite correlation between Briers' absence and defeats. It could be as simple as a lack of a kicking game.

| Myler for me to replace Briers if we don't give him a new contract. Yes he will cost but he's only 19 and the cost could be matched against the service we get from him for over 10 years for example ala Briers. Plus he isn't half bad at being a goal kicker too.
Just to add 3 games Briers hasn't played this season Salford Away, Castleford Home and Hull KR Murrayfield 3 defeats!!

Totally agree.
We are totally devoid of ideas when Briers doesn't play.
But we also badly missed the go forward of Morley and Westwood.

| I've not seen that much of Myler. Some think he's more of a support player in the mould of Sean Edwards - great at being in the right place at the right time to finish moves but not a great creator of chances. Anyone want to put me right on that?

| But why did Bradford Win yesterday when they had two absolutely shocking halfbacks on display ???
Deacon was woeful his kicking game was terrible and he created nothing, and Ben jeffries..... is well ..... Ben Jeffries i only noticed his involvement when he lay on the floor wasting time at a play the ball......
but the Bradford Team were enthusiastic and worked hard...they still chased down Deacon's poor kicks making them look half decent...and when Deacon kicked to touch we'd be good enough to loose posession early in the set to give Bradford the ball back and when Moanaghan kicked out on the full Bradford scored in the next set......
Mathers is going to be our most creative half back when Briers is out ...

Well he's 4th in the league in assists and 6th for tries, would seem he can do both.

I agree the "competition" between Morley and Carvell to be the best wasn't there yesterday not saying that the pack didn't have a good game but the intensity the two missing pack players offer just wasn't there.

| Personally i would take near enough anybody within reason as i feel Briers is way overrated and i get the impression that TS thinks the same.
Jonathan Thurston, Richard Myler, Danny Brough or anybody that is half decent and can produce the goods on a regular basis and is on the right side of 30.
If anybody watched the Wakefiled game on Saturday you would see that Briers isn't fit to clean the boots of Danny Brough.

You're being daft again.
1. Smith has post match on a number of occasions paid Briers special reference, and has if anything gone out of his way to single him out for praise.
2. Brough had a decent game on Saturday, the last couple of times he's been on SKY he's been woeful. If both were the same age right now, then you'd take Briers all day long.
Even you, and I say even you given your opinion on Briers, must have cringed yesterday as Bridge & Monaghan pretended to be halfbacks and just went left & right with no direction for 76 mins.
