Wolves centre Matt King has asked for the following statement, written by him, to be released through Warringtonwolves.com, the official website of Warrington Wolves, it reads:


"I've decided to write the following statement as an apology to the club and particularly the fans of Warrington Wolves. The decision to make this statement was made by me alone and I have not been asked by anyone connected with the club to come forward and make a statement.


Saturday afternoon's defeat at Harlequins was a very disappointing and frustrating afternoon for the players, fans and officials of this club. I understand the fans that had made the trip at some expense must have been very disappointed and I can tell you the players were even more so. Defeats like what we saw on Saturday really do hurt us, as I understand they do the fans as well.


During the second half I received a barrage of personal abuse directed at me from a section of our 'support'. The abuse culminated over a period of time before I reached my breaking point and I snapped. Being only human I retaliated verbally and with a hand gesture to the said 'supporters'.


I would like to apologise for any offence caused to any supporters, especially families and young children that were sat in this area. As a professional rugby league player I understand I have an example to set and many young supporters see me as a role model. I take pride in how I handle myself and always try to set a good example for others to follow on and off the field. My reaction to the abuse was out of character for me, but as I said before, I had reached my breaking point.

Once again can I reiterate my sincere apologies for any offence caused.

This statement has been written with sincerity and I hope the good supporters of Warrington Wolves will accept it."

Great gesture. I really, really hope he comes good for us.

Good on him, alot of respect for him doing that.

The fans that verbally abused him should be very ashamed.

It takes a big man to admit his mistakes so fair play to him.

but

it wasn't the hand gesture that upset me more the fact he was smiling.

It made him look arrogant and mercenary.

He has apologised though so me personally will draw a line under that.

Interesting read that and fair play to him but it can't have been nice for him to hear any abuse from his fans.

Fair play. Remember the bloke is only human and im sure the majority of people on here would have reacted in the same way to so much abuse. Lets try and brush this saga under the carpet and get behind the boys on Sunday to kickstart our season

Spot on, apologising to those who had a right to be offended and not those who didn't.

King has received some torrid abuse from "fans", purely because he's the easiest and closest to target. As I've mentioned previously on here, King received abuse at the Catalans game, despite the fact he had done nothing contributory to the scores conceded.

Bradford fans may be silent
Saints fans may be glory hunting
Hull fans may be abusive towards other fans

But there is no excuse for being abusive to your own players.

I applaud his statement.

He is a poster on this forum. I'm just waiting for him to own up and realise how his public behaviour reflects on his character. Matt King can't hide away from his actions, this guy shouldn't either.

Fair play to him, and should be acknowledged that he has said something, takes a big man to do that and has gone up in my estimation.
Yes I have been critical of him, and still stand by that, but can't knock the guy for having the round ones to say what he did.

IF 'fans' did run to the side of the pitch and verbally abuse him one Sat - the only question I have to ask is WTF are stewards there for - am sure despite the lack of any stewarding where I stand, if I ran to the boards at the HJ and hurled personal abuse at any player - am fairly sure I would be apprehended - quite rightly.

Fair play, i'm not a great fan of him, but he didnt deserve abuse the other day.

Agree I'm not his biggest fan but the abuse was out of order

Fair play to King. I think we all lead our lives by the notion that if you apologise for your actions when you know you have done wrong, then that then becomes the end of the matter.

Move on now. If he sorts his head out, he could still be a very important player for us.

Well done to Matt for being big enough and honest enough to apologise for his 'gesture' on Saturday.

I just hope that the 'idiot' who did abuse him in such a pathetic and unacceptable way has the good grace to do the same, but as others have said previously I won't hold my breath.

I sincerely hope that the supporters can now get behind him, starting on Sunday, and I honestly believe that we will see him causing the opposition plenty of problems over the coming weeks.

well done Matt for releasing this statement and admitting he was wrong with his actions but as he said you can only take so much. The offending person should be truely ashamed and now he/ she should stand up and be counted by following Matt's lead.
