Quote ="DallasMead"Been watching since the mid 1980s and Greg Mackey was easily the toughest Wire player I ever saw. Forget Boyd, Cullen etc, this man was 11 stone wet through and got smashed with head shots EVERY match, never injured, never missed a match........wire legend on the pitch and a top bloke off it.
RIP Mate.

You can say that again. I started supporting Warrington in the 90s when Jonathan Davies was in the side. One of my earliest memories was watching a Cup tie (regal trophy maybe?) against (i think) St Helens. Greg Mackey was hurt - a lower back injury. Interchange rule had just been brought in (around 1993/94) and Mackey was in so much pain he had to lie on his front on the trackside, just in front of the dugouts, as he couldn't sit on the bench due to the pain, and he may well have been needed to go back on before the end of the game.
I remember Ray French pointing this out, saying he would have to wait to go to hospital, as Warrington might need him to go in for a stint at hooker. Seriously tough guy.
A very sad loss.
