| It does raise a good point. It’s pretty awful to think that the likes of Chris Riley could be sitting on the scrap heap by 40.
Possibly the RFL and the individual clubs need to look at bringing in training programs etc when players reach the mid 30's, and possibly use sponsors etc as a way of finding their players employment opportunities - I'm sure that allot of employers, particularly local businesses would love to employ former players.

| Reading this makes me realise how astute Tyke was in making sure he got his degree under his belt before going fulltime. Looking at the other lads who haven't he doesn't seem to be further behind in pecking order, with the obvious exception of Mr Riley. but with the foundation laid for his later days,
Knowing a couple of the young lads, although the clubs seem to talk the talk there does seem to be an awful lot a pressure to go full time, whether this is their own insecurities or not begs another question.

| It's all very well making sure the players have degrees etc but being honest some of them aren't the brightest tools in the box & having a degree won't fix that. What is more important is that measures are in place to help players know about the world outside RL, be they 16, 22 or 33.

| It's funny, I was talking to a mate about Ben Foden, Northampton and England RU the other day, and how awesome his life must be. Good looking lad, no doubt on a 6 figure salary, dating a pop star. I can only relate to 1 of those things* through experience but what a fantastic existence. If he's smart, he'll retire at 30 odd and never have to work again. Not as easy as a footballer but still, what an opportunity.
Most RL players seem to be doing a degree of some description these days which is very sensible.
*I'm currently seeing platinum blonde warbler Gwen Steffani behind her husband's back.
