For what it's worth I'll probs buy the book. It's not like he's gonna make much money out of it once vat, publisher fee's etc... have been taken out of it.

We've speculated and gossiped over MA and his activities over the past few years. I'm at least willing to hear his side of things however skewered they may be.

This is no way me condoning his alleged actions however I'm sure many people on here have bought much more dubious books by notorious authors and not begrudged putting money in their pockets.

I don't for one minute condone what he did.... But it amazes me how people have made a complete about turn about a player who never took a backward step in a Salford shirt. Yes... he made some bad choices but to label him a drugs cheat is nothing short of ridiculous.

The guy played over 250 games in a Salford shirt... how many of those games do you think he played under the influence of anything at all ?.... I'm pretty certain most the games he played... he played honestly.

The whole thing reminds me of this old joke....

Now if MA had only done one thing wrong you could use that argument. However it seems that he may have been the catalyst for multiple problems from drinking, to drug taking both recreational and enhancement, to bullying, causing bodily harm and possibly racism ( alledgedly may I add). Not even mentioning the impact these actions may have had on other senior and more importantly junior members of the club / squad.

So where your welsh bloke made on mistake. That can't be said of MA it would seem.

Mal never took a backward step in our cause. Whatever, 'crimes against humanity' he's been accused of, you can't take that away.

I wish we had a couple of 16 stone Mal Alkers in our front row!

I think many of us are aware of the mess the club is in, but at the same time don't wish to hold up Alker as some sort of Messiah. After all, the mess with his captaincy being revoked was a symptom of the mess the club was in.

Oh yes, the captaincy debacle. A true showing of how committed he was to the club and not taking a step backward for Salford - I'm sure the player revolt and the subsequent re-instating of the captaincy after poor Rob Parker was hung out to dry. I'll never forget seeing the poor lad sat on his own in the Willows after one match, with only another three people willing to talk to him.

Im sure that Mal will cover the amount of drug abuse that may or may not have took place in his book both performance enhancing and social.
Personally ive witnessed Mal doing near superhuman efforts on a rugby field for 10 years and know im left questioning how much of that was down to Mal and how much was down to the performance enchancing substances he may or may not have taken.

Im sure the book will give me an idea of where i draw my mark.

The HGH revelation will affect his legacy in the short-term, as it should do, and Malcolm would not disagree with that. The good thing he has done here is open up the debate: how many other R.L. players have slipped past the testing procedures and lived to hide their tale?

I think there are a lot i suspect, as rugby league is high speed / high power / high impact game and the stresses and stains, bumps, broken bones and bruses they collect though a long ten year career anything to:

1) Take the edge of the pain
2) Make them feel super fit and healthy

I think players who take these probably know how long the drug is in their system for and plan their scedule around it, im not sure how the testers decide when and where they test the players but if it was me id be turning up at the players home on day offs / after rehab sesisons a week before the next game ect

As planned, I was down at Waterstones this morning for Malc's book signing.

I was really pleased to find myself in the company of so many other fans. After some of the antipathy towards Malc on this board, It was great to see many turn up to support him and wish him well. As for Malc himself, he was an absolute Gent, giving genuine thanks to everyone who turned up. I personally thanked him for his efforts and loyalty to our team and he replied, "It was an absolute pleasure and an honour mate", ENOUGH SAID!

Well I've now read the book, and it strikes me this isn't a book that tells the whole truth. Yes Malc makes some admissions but I can't quite put my finer on why it feels like so much has been left unsaid. I think it feels a bit like Clinton's "I did not inhale"

I think Malc also has a selective and some cases defective memory. He thinks we beat Leigh in the cup final by the late goal by Wlshere.

The book also fails to deal with a number of issues mainly because Alker likes the people involved. There are a lot of things that should be explored.

Tarry? Where?

The interesting issue is Malc's attitude to Shaun: it differs greatly from that told to me at the beginning of last season. I had and still have no reason to doubt what I was told. I presume matters changed as a result of the "sacking".

An interesting read but I would have liked more games memories. However, it was not written as a memoir.

Just been to Waterstone's at the Trafford Centre to get myself a copy but they'd sold out! They have ordered more and were hoping to get them this afternoon.

Official Book signing next week in the Club Shop followed by Alker being given the freedom of Salford.

I think Tarry is just putting the final touches on the fatwah. It should be ready just before the new online shop - so sometime next season hopefully.
