| Forgetting the personalities of the people involved i just cant see how we will attract a top quality ambitious coach (unless they are currently out of a job!) from UK/ Oz who is willing to work under a D of R. Surely all potential candidates will want to live/ die by their own actions and be responsible to only Mr Wilkinson and the board.
Adrian Lam would be a contender for me. Is he still U20s/ Assistant at St George?! Im normally all for promoting young English talent, but just feel we need an NRL coach who has worked within a good professional system along lines of Nathan Brown and McGuire. Perhaps Manly's Geoff Toovey?
Then over time bring on board good young potential English coaches - along lines of Wigan who seem to pride themselves on how they will produce coaches from the bottom to the top for the future. Wigan could do this if Wane moves up and you have Purtill and Anderson at other clubs.
Jesus its so difficult! Changed my mind mid way through typing that! Maybe we should just plump for a good English coach!! Bet Wilky has a headache on this one!

| I don't really care if the coach is English or Australian! We just need someone who can put some self-belief back in to the team.
Things are great when we're ten points up and the opposition have become slightly passive. As soon as the opposing forwards get a little bit aggressive, we start to struggle. Not everybody might agree, but the current coaching regime has done huge amounts of damage to attitude within the club. The performances on the pitch suggest, when we can't win just give up and go looking for an excuse, the back end of last season typified this. A few injuries and then all of sudden McRae had an excuse to fail. He keeps going on about a lack of experience last season, a quality coach can mold a team and motivate it to play in any manner he desires.
Anyway, for me, Mathew Elliott would fall into the same category as McRae. Not bringing anything we haven't seen before. Putril could be a good choice, worked under some excellent coaches, but he doesn't seem interested in leaving Sts. If Hudds or Wigan don't snare him, I'd go for Adrian Lam. Was an excellent player at all levels of the game, has been learing his trade for a while now and the overwhelming fact he has worked for Wayne Bennett would rubber stamp his credentials for me. Milward, I'd be sceptical about, Leigh got found out in the back half of last season, but results would suggest he's doing a good job this season.
What we really need, is someone that can turn our forwards into a pack of snarling dogs, and to sort out that shambles call a defence. The whole business of not bringing the Aussies/Kiwis over until after christmas needs to stop.
I think we really missed a trick, by not signing Andrew Ryan. We are really missing a real on field leader. We should have offered him the same as what Anderson and Bailey were on collectively. McRae didn't show enough faith in the players already at the club.

And therein lies much of the issue - a board and a chief exec who have overseen and accepted nothing but failure for years.
Ultimately the owners of the club are the shareholders, the board answer to them - perhaps they haven't been asking the right questions?

| Simms has signed some duffers but he has also signed some quality, surpose we will never know how good a Director of football he is until we have somebody to compaire him to...
As for a new coach who ever it is has to bring in new ideas and a new way to play the game rugby league has moved on and we need to keep moving forward, warrington, wigan and St Helens were the best examples this week

That depends wholly on one's definition of 'failure'.

Agreed, but if you're suggesting we've seen much success then I'd say that depends wholly on your definition as well
You can certainly argue that just being in existence is a measure of some sucess, but I really think we all want just a little more than that!

I know earlier on the thread I was banging on about English coaches, that was a bit of a wind up post to illustrate the lack of credible options and also, the basic fact that if you hire an English coach, they have to be successful from the word go like Noble was, otherwise it is very hard for them because they get regarded by the fans as a 'no name' even if they were a good player (eg Lowes, Harris). If I was being totally honest the only English coaches I would want as a Salford fan would be Noble or Kear, if Wakefield lose their franchise then I think Kear would do well at Salford, he would come in with confidence because he's been in situations like Sheffield and Wakefield before where he's gone into a side at the wrong end of the table, and made them hard fighting contenders. Also his one year as Hull head coach they won the Challenge Cup and knocked Warrington and Andrew Johns out of the playoffs..before the 'politics' of the Hull dressing room and a couple of high profile overseas players who he didn't see eye to eye with, undermined him. I would have Kear after TS at Warrington if we had the chance. Another possibility would be Jon Sharp who I think was decent at Hudds most of the time.
Outside of those the best bet is like you say to find a young and hungry NRL assistant coach. Some of these are very ambitious, and very confident in their abilities, but they need a head coach opening to give them a chance. It happens in American Football where you will get some guy who was "offence co-ordinator" at a top team jumping on a struggling team as head coach and then turning them around. The advantage with those is, if Salford advertise for a job, the ones with confidence in their ability will self-select themselves. A lot of people would see Salford as a potential graveyard job because none of Gregory, Harvey, McCormack, Harrison have ever had a job in the top flight again. But then there might be some Aussie totally out of the scene of SL with no negative preconceptions of Salford being a struggling club in an ageing stadium, who will just think "head coaching job, club who's not been in the playoffs much, sounds like a place I can demonstrate my quality". That's what Tony Smith did when he came to Huddersfield who were bottom every year before he arrived. Also Castleford unearthed two coaches when they were in bad times - Raper and Matterson, both of them made Cas competitive.
The hardest thing will be the issue with work permits. It's hard to get a work permit for them if they haven't been a head coach or an international coach.

| The M.E.N.Tuesday,Simms says we have had lot of interest, from Australia and England.
I Bet the remit is,you have to work under a football manager, and you will not be able to pick
you assistants,If the board want the load down on Australian coaches they could ask Mozza,
anybody but Mr Simms.

| Just listened to the interview wih Veivers on the Beeb and have to say as it's the first time i've heard him speak I doubt he could motivate a guy with the trotts to sit down for a minute. How on earth is a guy who sounds that uninterested, dower and uttlery tedious going to motivate players?.
Think the webchat tomorrow with Simms will make interesting listening, just hope that they allow the questions that need to be asked get through rather than censoring it.

| Brian Noble fans choice?! From what I've read on here I wouldn't say he is 1st choice of the fans but I wouldn't be to disappointed if this was the case either. I think based on what I have read on this forum Lam would be the fans choice, just hope the board read this forum too!!

Certainly a better option than Millward or Noble.

| If it's Wrigley, then it culd be possible the club have really done their homework this time. Let's hope we're not just doing a, 'well it worked for Wigan'. When I saw the Bunnies a couple of seasons ago, they played some classy rugby and had some good YOUNG players.
I'd still prefer Adrian Lam.
