..... Well there's yet another truly inspired comment from someone who's almost certainly never played at any decent level, but sees fit to criticise a pro sportsman. I could be wrong, you might well be 10 times the player he is (or all the others who you no doubt slate), but somehow I doubt it.
One thing I am pretty sure of, is that you would come off 2nd best each and every time if you were up against him.
But you probably know better....

No it's a realistic fact.
Ste Tyrer, Matty Smith, Ste Bannister for example.
There are Wigan players just the same, Wild, Aspinwall, Ainscough etc
Look back over my posts over the years wrt young players at academy level.
Mcgilvary was/is never going to be a Superleague player and if you disagree the fair enough.

| As I don't understand your latest comment, I'm not certain I can reply in full.
Are you implying the 6 players you have named are also poor quality and not of SL standard ?
If you can clarify, I'll let you have my thoughts.

I sense a cheap shot at Salford here? Critisizing one of our current players, 2 of our past, one whose coming and one who we was linked with. I disagree with you about Wild, he got into the GB squad and whenever I've seen him play, he's been a hard worker and is immense in defense, and offers a bit going forward aswell. I rekon he'll do a better job for us than Swain. if he can stay fit.

| Disagree with Rogues Gallery all you like, he's right about McGilvray.
Seems a nice kid and wish him all the best at the LSV but if you can't get in the Salford team of 2010, your chances in SL are going to be pretty limited.

Not at all, and I apologise if it came across that way.
Maybe Thomas and James Coyle would have been better examples at Wigan.
I watch a lot of academy RL and have seen so many of the next big things coming through, only to see them fade into obscurity for whatever reason.

I agree, but maybe he should of been given more of a chance this year, how long was his injured for though? When he played the first team not this season just gone but the one before he didn't look that bad to be fair, if Leigh can keep him injury free it could be a good signing for them.

However, he was also having a cheap shot, because that's what Rogues does almost everywhere he goes, no matter how he dresses it (being passive/aggressive), but especially when Saints' youth development comes into the conversation - even tangentally.

At Superleague level in particular you need a winger with height or a really good spring and timing to take a high ball to the corner. Unforunatly for McGillvray he was made to look extremely vulnerable and cost us 3 or 4 tries in that Crusaders game. Yes people could argue his case and say that there could have been more pressure on the kicker but it is part a wingers job now to able to deal with these high kicks in every game. I can understand why he was left out after that because every SL coach would have seen the video footage and he would have been number one target.
A change of club and regular game time at a lower level will hopefully help the lad recover his confidence. I wish him well!

By the same Logic, how did Tyer get so much game time?

I think it was more a case of Mcrae having to go with what he believed to be the best option available to him. I guess Tyrer offered more to the team because of his abilty to kick goals and score the odd try?
Despite Tyrer making some defensive howlers he was capable of accassionally coming up with something brilliant. Like when he jumped out of the field of play to flick the ball back (with his feet off the floor, Billy Slater style) resulting in a Salford try.
Would you have picked McGillvray before Tyrer?

Interesting but would you not have been concerned that teams would have been peppering him all the time? I'd imagine McGillvray would have won a foot race between the two but personally I don't like small wingers.

Jason Robinson? Phil Ford? Fata Sini?
Seriously I did feel sorry for Mcgilvray, he injured his knee 5 mins into the opening game and Crusaders punished him massively for not being able to jump and he never got a look in after that - not sure when he was fit again.
Having said that i don't think he offered anything that Tyrer didn't (bit quicker, couldn't kick goals) so don't think we would have fared any diffferntly with him in the team
Wish him well in the future though

There will always be the odd exception to the rule.
Phil Ford the rubber man was skinny but much taller, Fata Sini was built like a brick Shi*thouse and Robinson was a total freak in open play! As an example If you look at Aussie national teams over the years they generally seem to go for big powerful wingmen with pace. The smallest I can recall is Michael Hancock but he was very powerful.

| Dean McGillvray never got the chance to prove himself, wether that was due to injury or form in the academy I don`t know , can`t find any stats or news on either.
Best of luck to him wherever he may end up

Also signed Andrew Thornley , who we had on loan a couple of years back from Wigan.
