I received an email from the club about this today and then sent the following undeliverable response -
Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently:
marketing@reds.co.uk
Technical details of permanent failure:
Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain. We recommend contacting the other email provider for further information about the cause of this error. The error that the other server returned was: 550 550 unrouteable via ArmourPlate (state 14).

Subject: Re: Reds ask fans to Walk the Walk for charity! SCR:0000135641
From: (deleted by me!)
To: Salford City Reds <marketing@reds.co.uk>
To whom it may concern,
How about I just come along on the day without the need to raise any funds
as a long and loyal supporter? I can get a lift so no need 2 walk as ive
got a bad back! I'm sure you would be delighted in my interest to visit the
new stadium for free, which was something that was promised originally and
so that I can pass on my experience to any new prospect supporters and
influence them to come along as a full paying spectator in the future?
I'm sure you would prefer I come along in any event without the need to
raise funds at this time in this very difficult financial economy as my
future support may rely on a visit?
I look forward to your response.
As this email to our marketing department was undeliverable (not sure whether any others have this problem?) I am hoping they are in touch with this forum and can reply accordingly.

I'd say the marketing@reds.co.uk looks like a bonafide email account to reply to. Why else have it on the website???

Not everything Fungus no but as i said the foundation are the people to contact not the marketing / media people in the club they are trying to promote the event not run it, all their realistly going to say is "eh well ill get back to you"
Its like me hunting down Parish on the quays with Walshy and asking him when the shirts are going to be in the shop
As for Marketing@reds.co.uk ive had a little gander round the official site and i cant find this anywhere...i stand by my point that its proabably a email they only use to send the mail shots out to the fans not to recieve them, my experience in contacting the club is a bit hit and miss ive got replys using a facebook and twitter before (they seem to have their fingers on teh pulse for this one) but have also waited a long time when sending through the "contact us" bit .
Quote I received an email from the club about this today '"
Im glad that some people recieved the mail shot....cost i didnt.....yep you read it right...i didnt, season ticket holder nearly 20 years and not a sausage BUT i have sent and recieved various emails from the people organising this event over the last few weeks and they have been only happy to answer any questions i have had.

If anybody is interested in this we can set up a heritage route and expected times. I'll certainly join in with this pre-official walk leg, weather permitting.

I'd be up for that.
Throstles Nest would be around Pomona tram stop somewhere, wouldn't it?

I estimate 4.5 miles, but that was starting at Cavendish Street in Hulme, which wasn't the actual ground, but the location of the club. Pomona Gardens was on what is currently waste land between the tram lines (between Cornbrook and Pomona) and the Ship Canal, so I was assuming that Throstles Nest would have been on the opposite side of the Irwell to that. Not sure about Mile Field, though it must be somewhere in the Ordsall area.
Edit:
from reading this:
books.google.co.uk/books?id=qhsN ... &q&f=false
And also discovering that there's still a Throstle's Nest bridge on the Bridgewater canal (image 4 in the link below)
www.penninewaterways.co.uk/bridgewater/bri51.htm
I'd deduce that our ground must have been in the vicinity of the current Exchange Quay complex.

Can't imagine why no one had a similar thought earlier...
I was going off the Throstle's Nest Bridge on the canal. The official website says the ground was at Throstle's Nest Weir, so I'm assuming it would have been pretty much next to the canal.
EDIT: Found this photo on a quick search: www.trafford.gov.uk/content/tca/ ... ageID=1729 - including a guide to the location.

Quote Chapel, Cavendish Street (architect Edward Walters, 1847), was a particularly fine neo-Gothic building but was demolished in the early 1970s to allow expansion by Manchester Polytechnic.'"
the actual site of the Chapel is occupied by the Righton bldg of Mcr Metro Uni ( 13) [urlhttp://www.mmu.ac.uk/travel/maps/mmu_maps_allsaints_aytoun.pdf[/url. the nearest piece of grass then ( and now ) is all Saints Park off Oxford Rd Mcr . A good place to start ! Although judging by the 1870 street map there was waste ground west of the Chapel & School , that could've been played on.
throstle's nest weir 1893 from the Salford side.
Mile Field:- Darryll Platts book puts it west of Trafford Rd opp Thostles Nest , so I guess roughly where the carpark of the old Cinema is now.
New Barnes Football ground is roughly where Ohio avenue is off Broadway
By the looks this ' walk ' is starting to look like the rl equivalent of the Hajj, a pilgramage every Salford fan must take at least once .

Innit just. I did something similar for United a bit ago, started at Bank Street and walked to the old North Road site (now Northampton Road and yes, I know that's going backwards in chronological order but it was more convinient...) through Newton Heath taking in various sites that were either relevant or in homage to United and local football. It's become a continous ongoing project to visit and record as many relevant parts of United's history as possible.

It'd be good to do something similar for Salford as well. It could also, on a separate occasion probably, go onto involve other local places of relevance to RL. Wheater's Field, for example.
Mind you, looking at KOTS's list above it could be a long bloody project!

| I'm thinking that KOTS's list could evolve into a good length walk over time, with an improvised game of touch rugby at each location.

| Lots of moaning on here, one or two points I can accept.
I personally dont see the appeal of the walk, certainly not the entertainment provided in the new stadium and I can wait an extra few weeks to have a look at the facilities when we entertain Wigan. If you want to pay the money or get sponsorship then get on with it. I will be going, as my girlfriend who rarely goes the willows has signed us both up and raised the sponsor money in a day so its all about personal choice.

I remember last time a improvised game of touch rugby occurred on sacred turf, to this day I'm still convinced pipo knocked on scoring the winner.... .....

Rough directions for the heritage pre-walk walk:
g.co/maps/4m3nh
Adds about 6.5 miles to the Stadium walk. A good 2-hour schlep at a decent pace.

It was a tad friskier than touch rugby too. Good stuff.

| Was just reading about stadium developments in the vt.
One of the saints fans posted this
Quote Season ticket holders were given their first opportunity to see inside Saints new stadium on Friday night. Langtree Park was opened up for two hours and the team did an open training session for the second hour (getting battered by hail, snow, rain and wind in the process!).
The fitting out is still ongoing but the shop is now finished and open for business. There are clearly teething troubles - one of the roller shutters for the turnstiles failed to open for instance - but I guess testing everything is one reason to have a ramp up event.
A few thousand STH turned up and we were free to wander around the ground as the concourse is continuous. There were no services available as they weren't ready in time (this event was required by the Council for H&S rather than initiated by Saints) but the flashy new bridge was finished with its fancy lighting. Very impressive and a superb entrance on to the whole site. '"
Perhaps salford should take onboard how one of the major RL teams in the world do things. They might learn a thing or two!
