| In answer to the origonal question i got to say it was a sucess.
I went and had a gr8 time. Really enjoyed the festival feel of the place. Has some gr8 chats with people i wouldn't otherwise have chatted to and got to se some games i would normally never have been able to se.
It's true that it didn't seem to expand the game much but all the scotts i chatted to (only 3 i admit) seemed to prefer league that union (inside and outside the ground) but didn't come because they were watching football!
According the the anouncement there were over 6000 locals there. I would guess that about half of those were new to the game.
I will def be there next year (if it's at murryfield again).

| Glad I went, many fans turn up for 'their' game & bugger are the inherent problem with this event, vast majority of fans are only interested in ' their game ' so as spectacle on telly it looks a failure. Also because the points count the playing style was on the whole defensive, not ' exhibition or attacking and didn't showcase the best attacking qualities of the game.
The City as a venue to visit is great, the weather was superb, and most people who went probably have good memories of the vist but the Rugby was forgettable.

Agreed, for me it wasn't about the rugby, that was just a bonus and a reason to visit such a beautiful city. I went for 5 days and got back last night. I may never go to Edinburgh ever again as I prefer to travel to somewhere further afield but if anyone ever asks me whats Edinburgh like at least I can give a very informative and favourable view of it.
When I go to Perpignan, again it's not really for the rugby, its an excuse to get away from home for a few days but I'd swap it for Edinburgh any day of the week.
Success or not I don't care but I'd certainly rather spend the night in Edinburgh after a game than Castleford, Wakefield, Hull or just about anywhere else on the RL map!
Finally, I too only went in to watch Salford as there were far too many other things to do in Edinburgh than sit in a soulless stadium for another 4 hours then do more of the same the next day. I enjoy watching other teams play on Sky on a Friday and Saturday evening but that's about enough for me, why I would want to watch another team play live (free or not) isn't for me and I didn't even take another game in fully on sky the whole weekend, saw the second half of Saints versus Wigan and that was it.
Those who just went for the game on the day and came straight back home and those who didn't go haven't missed what they never had but believe you me, a weekend in Edinburgh is worth it, with or without RL.

It's a shame thousands of other supporters did like it.
It's done to expand the game and "IF" in the event of that people get to have a good experience and heaven forbid enjoy themselves then so be it.
OMFG!!!!!! it's terrible isn't it.
I sympathise with those priced out of it. For us it was France with the kids and miss out on Celtic and Edinburgh or vice versa. You won't hear me moaning cos we couldn't afford to go France. We were gutted to miss a Salford game, but I get the feeling we made the right choice.
But to have an opinion on how successful the whole weekend was when you either wasn't there or turned up for one game then went straight back home is just ludicrous.'"
See. There you go. I'm not allowed to have an opinion. Despite the fact I'm also basing it on my outing to Cardiff. Still, we have to be positive about everything in Rugby League, don't we?
Coming soon - Moscow Magic to get more people out there interested in their RL sides.

Good point.
It would help if people watched some of the other games apart from their own instead of drinking outside the stands. I went out during a game for something to eat and there were more people outside than in.

On a weekend when the Rah-Rahs are filling Croke Park (82,000) and the getting 45,000 at Cardiff for two semi-finals getting a total of ~40,000 to Edinburgh for seven matches is abysmal. No wonder the paper and TV coverage was almost non-existent.
No matter how enjoyable the day(s) itself may be the event needs to be ditched or at the very least be moved to a much smaller stadium (Villa Park anyone?). Three years on and it has achieved nothing.'"

Summed it up perfectly for me chief . Edinburgh was a place I'd wanted to go to for years but never really found the time, this weekend gave me a kick in the pants to go and see it and boy was it worth it.
As for the whole concept of MM, I'm not a fan really but I have been to both Cardiff and Edinburgh to watch my team, realistically it's an expense I could do without if it wasn't for my insane devoutness to this club, I mean to attend all 27 league rounds, the challenge cup rounds, Catalans away, the MM and both the Challenge Cup and Super league finals as many of us do in theses current economic climbs is not an easy thing to do.
Also MM never really feels like there's anything to play for even though two points are on the line, in fact it just feels more like a friendly but maybe that's just me.

I agree with that. The rugby seemed pretty secondary to actually being there in Edinburgh. Usually after we lose I'll be annoyed about it for a bit but on Saturday I just didn't really dwell on it at all.

It's not just the price of the tickets, though. Transport, hotels, the food prices...
And I can't believe people are using Fancy Dress as a plus point for this thing, either. Is anyone out there still sane?!

| To two answers -
one
the places I used as examples [uhave a Rugby League presence[/u
two
fancy dress: an example of fans enjoying themselves. Yes a bit childish but enjoyment. It was not compulsory. Nor is enjoying yourself.
(As an aside, too many posters snipe at those who enjoy themselves without causing any one harm. Shed puritans? Interestingly it seems to be other SL teams' fans who peacefully enjoy themselves)
three
The media were interested.
As for papers - some did enter a write-up - even the Scotsman! We are taking on a real Sisyphus challenge. Now if Jade had played Rugby League.
four
I quite like the Ludditesl: they tried to preserve the standards of the people of the time. What I find disappointing is the common suggestion that such experiments fail as they expose the game away from our parochial comfortable ways.
I'm old enough to remember Soccer (Football) facing major challenges in getting audiences and media-goodwill - it was the 70's. Now every Dick and Harriet seems to watch "the beautiful game".

but not for long with Sky and the clubs trying to take it away from the working classes and make each game an "event" on the calendar, with a higher percentage of corporate seats being the norm for new build.

At Arsenal on Tuesday I was surrounded by Corporates who had no idea about the team, songs etc but just had paid the top dollar and so got a ticket.
I would never want RL to go that way and do not think it will, but I am ripped off enough with football without Red Hall wanting me to spend more of my hard earned money on a meaningless trip to Scotland.
And no I do not mean the ticket prices which were good, but I mean the hotel, petrol, food and other various costs which come with a trip like this.
The only people who benefitted from this from what I can see are the Bars and Hotels in Edinburgh.
I have not heard one person say "watching the games was a great and well worth it" Its been... all the bars were good, Edinburgh good etc
So as an advert for Scottish Tourism it appears to have done very well for itself.
Next year Afganistan

That's not a good thing, believe me.
And I can't believe people are advocating fancy dress at a sporting event. Well, if you think people dressing up like tw*ts is all part of the enjoyment then Godspeed. Personally I think it shows that the sanity of this country is slowly disappearing.

I don't think they made that much out of the event but they are relying on the same core 60000 going who go to wembley and Old trafford to turn up. I would have like to go but can't afford to go to all these games - its that simple. The RL want to make the game more accessible but only seem to be succeeding in making it less so.
