| Quote ="Bigpev"You seem to be forgetting that the majority of housing in Salford is social housing provided by the state, how are private landlords responsible for the social housing slums in Salford or elsewhere in the country?
If payment wasn't pai direct, the tenants would spend the money themselves and end up in arrears then be out on the street..............I see adverts for private rented housing all the time and an awful lot say no DSS.
The majority of houses that lost value were privately owned now surely you can see that, in Seedley and Langworthy there only 5% council houses, the rest privately owned. A certain Social Landlord moved into the area in the early 90's and took in tenants who local concils had kicked out. These were mostly problem families, and they brought their problems with thme hence the decline, other private landlords also then moved in and did the same because of the ease at getting rent.
Your last comment refers to today where private landlords do not want the problem of having to get the rent of tenants. I lived and worked in Seedley and Langworthy through all this so I know what went on in fact I had a massive dossier on it and lost count of the number of "property developers" who moved into the area in the mid to late 90's with the resulting degeneration effect.
Read Andrew Marr's the Making of Britain with regards inflation.
To the Ground, Salford is not as deprived as it once once was, look at the Quays for the developments and Media City, the Council also invested £20m in the BBC Phil.'"
Which social landlord was this? If the local authority kicked them out, someone had to provide for them. Surely if what happened is as you say it was just a matter of displacing these problem families from social housing to private landlords? How does what a Labour Salford Council does lie at the door of the Tories?
Ready to accpet your claims on inflation are wildly inaccurate?

Can I just pull you up on that one. Please feel free to point to anywhere I have said the abuse shouted at Graeth Thomas was OK?
If you are going to lie, don't make it such an obvious whopper. no comments on the subjects being discussed then?
What do you think will be the possible effect of a change of government on Salford Council spending plans re the stadium?

I'll ask you again to point out where I said it was OK? i think you will find I also said that abuse is abuse, no matter why fans dish it out or what they say and that it should all be condemned.
Rolling back the State is the way to go. Unfortunately for Salford Reds if public spending is cut, I think that the stadium will be under threat. It's not exactly a critical project is it, other than for the club. If the club is not attractive enough to private investors it should re-assess it's position and compete at a level it can afford to sustain.

To be fair the topic did start with concerns about the election influencing fate of the new stadium.

| Yes, the Stadium IS a critical project as without the stadium Peel are not allowed to develop that area.
Please can someone correct me if i am wrong but I believe this was one of the clauses with the developement of the Barton area?

What is accpet?, inflation averaged 18% in 1980 in the first year of Thatcherism
as for the above, families were being rehoused from all over, many not from Salford, the Social Landlord (not council housing) had something to do with a church but has changed its name now and operates out of a multi-million pound new office block.

| Quote ="Scanners"Anyway, back on topic, what's the crack with the new stadium?
Will a Tory government mean that Salford Council won't have the money it has promised to the project? Given that Salford is classed as a deprived area, can the council justify £20m for such a scheme when the money could be much better spent elsewhere?
If the Salford club can't afford a new facility and can't get sufficient funds from the private sector, surely it is time to look at the fact that the club cannot compete at the top level, and to seek a more realistic level to compete at?'"
Scanners, whichever party comes to power the stadium development should go ahead unless there are hidden agendas regarding how much money will have to be clawed back to fund the deficit.
If we dont get the new stadium I for one cannot see the directors having the finance or will to carry on in Superleague.

In fairness I dont think that he actually said that it was fine to abuse players in that way.
Some of the chants that some Salford supporters came out with against the officials and Wigan players last Sunday left a lot to be desired and should be condemned.

Critical to who? Not to the people of Salford as a whole, nor to Peel.
If it were critical to Peel why are they putinng such a begligible amount of money in? They are relyng on the NWDA to provide millions and Salford Council to come up with £20m!!
No clauses.

That was my point that in the current climate spending plans will be slashed. With Salford being a safe Labour seat it won't cost whoever wins anything.
I would agree that without the stadium Salford are pretty much finished as a top flight club.

the annual average was 18% which implies that the figure as higher as I said read Andrew Marr,s Making of Britain, I do know the social landlord, the other councils were Manchester, Wigan, Bolton, Trafford and that were the ones we were aware of.
Direct payments do, as a landlord myself in the past i know how difficult is was to get my tenant to pay up on time, direct payments mean landlord gets money with no problem and doesn't even have to go near the house, having worked in the area and sat on the partnership board as a resident I kno what I am talking about, you having no experience of this degeneration ould not understand it I have tried to explain if you don't accept it OK, but I sit on the board of the Development Trust in the area and do volunteer work on a saturday in the resource centre dealing with local residents on a daily basis.

So you can't back up your 22%, or in fact your claim that the annual average was 18%? Might it have been that the high point was 18%? No comment on how it was at 3% when Labour came in 1997?
So Langworthy and Seedley were swamped by people kicked out by social landlords in Manchester, Wigan, Bolton and Trafford?
Direct payment meant you got your money easier. Were you one of the landlords who bought and forced locals to sell up for peanuts? Direct payment doesn't mean degeneration. Tenants not looking after their homes and lanlords, be they social or private not maintaining them leads to degeneration.
How do you know I have no experience of an area degenerating? Bit presumptious there.

You trust Wikipedia??
Must have been an awful lot of unscrupulous private landlords who swooped on Langworthy and were somehow happy to take money and allow their properties to fall into disrepair. Did all these unscrupulous landlords profit greatly from regeneration money or are they still there?

| Scanners the money from Salford CC is not an Investment - its a loan. The money to be repaid very quickly from other income streams. Salford - like all large Cities can be at the front of the queue when requiring low rate money. Peel - sensibly are allowing SCC to be a funder for this sensible project and I for one have no doubts that it will come to fruition and we will be in SL next time. Castleford & Wakey are the clubs I feel in danger of losing their place.
I have enjoyed the Big Fight between Big Pev & Yourself with Inter Round Summaries from Barrington Dalby (Original Salford CR). However as Referee I do feel that no mention of Denis Healey having to go cap in hand to the IMF to save us from ignominy is a glaring omission from all sides.

But it turned out that the economy was in much better shape than Healey and the Labour government thought it was and the IMF bail out was in fact not needed at all and was quickly paid back without being touched. Plus Scanners mentions 25% rates of inflation in the 1970's but forget to mention it was the inflationary budgets of Anthony Barber in the 1970-74 Tory government that caused inflation to go so high. He wanted to stimulate the economy and reduce unemployment by having an expansive budget but he didn't want to raise taxes to do it. So he increased the money supply to an unsustainable level and thus wrecked the stable economy left by Roy Jenkins in 1970.

Early Bath, I wonder how many posters know who Barrington Dalby was?
On the Denis Healey was that the time when the pound was devalued but the pound in our pocket was the same as it always was?

Now that was the devaluation in 1967, Harold Wilson was the one who said 'it doesn't affect the pound in your pocket'.

I think you will find I mentioned Britain going to the IMF in 1976 on a thread on the Sin Bin
It may be a loan, but it's public money. Given the current climate should any local authority be loaning such amounts?
When you say low rate money, what is the cost?
What other income streams?
How quickly?
Peel are being very sensible letting someone else risk their money.
If it's such a sure fire success why aren't Peel just getting on with it. After all they are a very successful well financed company that would have no problem investing £20m??
